FOCUS: Little progress made in cleaning up radioactive soil, gov’t criticized

More than 15 months after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster, municipalities affected by the release of radioactive substances are struggling with how to dispose of all the radioactive soil collected through decontamination efforts.

Prime Minister Yoshiyuki Noda vowed when taking office last September that he would lead the decontamination effort. But that has proven to be an empty promise, say officials of municipalities in the Tohoku region of northeastern Japan and some areas of Kanto, which includes the Tokyo metropolitan area.
