There are some serious questions that are just begging to be answered here. Has there been advances in modern demolition that could enable this to happen so quickly? Did any pieces fall and break fuel asseblies below? What is the status of the sfp?
Report Comment
They put the steel cover over the pool last week to keep debris out.
Report Comment
Spent fuel pools typically have ventilation systems with charcoal filters.
Would a steel lid on a spent fuel pool cause hydrogen gas to build up or another emissions from the pool not trapped by the water?
thanks
Report Comment
The polishing tanks in the filtration system would donate hydroxil ions when they encounter free hydrogen if they are still filtering. Mud and seawater really take a toll on ion resin banks.
Report Comment
I'm a tad confused as they just put this cover on. Are they now going to attempt removing fuel that is not damaged" Was it international pressure? As usual so many questions and the answers seem to change like the weather speaking of which did the storm cause damage? If anyone knows why they removed the cover please inform. Thanks.

A sad reminder [from AGreenRoad's link above]:
"So how much plutonium did everyone inhale in the US? The following expert in hot particles explains through the use of EPA figures, that in just four days in March 2011, everyone in San Francisco inhaled 75 MILLION radioactive plutonium atoms. "

Good. I think they removed the rotting steel framework (roof subconstruction). Next will hopefully be those columns to which the framework was fixed to. It's good to scrap the useless parts of the structure.
Less weight, less danger from eq / tornado, increased stability.

Can someone tell me if there is a top floor missing on number three reactor aswell?
Wouldn't the top cap of the yellow reactor containment be visible. When do we get some relevant information on the third reactor building?
By the way both number three and four are identical from start.
Report Comment
Hi urban, at least 1 floor of unit 3 is missing, likely more. The yellow cap made its way into the orbit in March 11 – no lid on the reactor anymore, it's open….

I think it is in the turbine building, below that giant hole in the roof. [There are 2 holes, not far apart.]

Thats my take on it, searched, never saw it in any picture.
Nuke prompt criticality, I pre-supposed this a long time ago just based on what I saw, wrote to Arnie who confirmed it was indeed possible.

While no one trusts TEPCO, I do suspect that this is normal construction in preparation for the building cover and cranes they were talking about.
The school I teach at (here in Japan), demolished an old 3 story concerete and steel classroom building and is building a new one. I was really surprised by how it was done. Much of it was done with big backhoe-like machines with big crab claw-like attachments. They would literally grab a wall, pinch and break through it, and removed it a chunk at a time. I don't know much about construction and never saw this before, but it was fascinating, and efficient. These machines took down the building in a few days without excessive debris falling or endangering the other buildings which were very close. I was impressed. Perhaps the Japanese have refined such techniques because buildings are so close together in this country.
So based on construction I've been seeing at my school, I can imagine how they could easily and swiftly take down a wall of the unit 4 building.
Not that I'm defending them, just pointing out what makes sense to me.

Agreed!

The only thing that makes sense to me is that there just isn't much left in the reactor 4 sfp. The only way Tepco's actions have any logic is if there is only a bit of melted fuel left in the bottom of the sfp, so they will throw a lead cover over it. Otherwise, they are simply insane, as are all of the silent governments, around the world.

Number three way more damage … way more radiation … that's where the crane is sitting on the fuel … so if criticality happened in that pool … we're lucky it's still intact … much more difficult to access … no press folks standing around checking out that view …
Three reactors shot … Number one got a 65 mph plastic tent, but no human can survive to do a bore hole, explosion, containment breach
Number Two really hot, doesn't hold water over eighteen inches … did a boroscope (twice) containment breached
Number three (Mox unit) big explosion, obviously the entire core ejected from explosive breach of containment (this has still not been admitted, though no one has seen the intact, GE Blue Light Special Yellow primary containment cover lately (since 3/11/11) though remnants of an imperfect combustion may well be following its brother and sister coriums from one and two down into the Fukushima water table …
Nice to see the cranes working … spin 'em around once for the west coast, to show 'em we got the problem in hand, and all you enenews ranters can get on with your sorry lives, and go out drinking, and not sitting around Saturday nights playing doomsday dirges on your keyboards of false freedom … so sayeth the Nukie!
I say Rant On Newsers … Hold to the truth as you see it. Question the motives of the nuclear apologists; their dysfunctional world view outed by Fukushima, their arguments sound tinny and self-serving.
Peace.

Why do the majority of people, when something serious happens and the minority of people who TRY to bring the truth to light, end up being called "whacko's, weirdo's..etc"? Is it THAT uncomfortable to hear the TRUTH? I, IMHO, always Wanted to hear the truth..no matter HOW bad it was. What has society become? (not looking for a real answer here)

don't waste ur attention on a "Kackvogel".
his "and go out drinking" shows me that he must still living at home by mami and papi
or in a homeless home.
and that he is pissed of to go out for drinking
and or mami and papi has gives him some house-arrest.
but drinking is verry importent for him to feel himself "better&cooler" then we all other ones,
is what he said behind the words "sorry lives".
in truth is it a cry for help from a lonensome tursty teenaged-mutanted….

Ned was being sarcastic. The statement about going out to drink was meant to describe what sheeple say. His point was that while Fukushima spews poison, and we shout about the danger to alert the world, the majority is out drinking (or watching the Kardashian sisters on TV). It is similar to saying "move along, nothing to see here" as a way to make the point that we should do exactly the opposite: Stop! Hey what's that sound? Everybody look what's going down…
For what it's worth.

Go back & read his post carefully, line by line. It is oviously sarcasm. If you truly don't understand this, re-read his last paragraph for his unvarnished sentiment.

Nedli, my apoligies for:
1) trying to be your spokesman
and
2) using the male gender pronouns, as I truly don't know if you be man or woman. It truly doesn't matter to me one way or the other, but it is just easier to say 'he' and 'him' rather than 'he or she' and 'him or her.'
