[…] Citizens’ groups trying to promote “playing outside” in the Tokyo metropolitan area face similar problems.

They often invite Hirofumi Harada, a member of the anti-nuclear organization No Nukes Plaza Tokyo, to give lectures at study meetings.

According to Harada, it is necessary for the groups to regularly measure radiation levels and avoid “hot spots,” where radiation levels are relatively high. But he also warns against overreacting.

“Radiation levels in the Tokyo metropolitan area are not so serious as to prohibit children from playing outside,” Harada said. “What people should do are such things as hand-washing, gargling and dressing cuts if they suffer injuries.” […]

In May last year, pediatrician Shintaro Kikuchi, who has urged the Koriyama city government to set up indoor playgrounds, studied weight changes in 33 kindergarten pupils in the city.

He found that 4 and 5 year olds were gaining 1 kilogram less than the average increase of 30 children of the same age before the nuclear accident.

“The causes for the smaller increase are unknown. But there is a possibility that stress and the change of food are having an influence on their growth,” Kikuchi said. […]

    Hey kids!

Remember, when you come inside after playing in the radioactivity outside, just gargle, wash you hands and, most importantly, smile!

They are not properly growing? Oh well, its obviously the paranoid stress people! Worrying about a non threat. And avoiding contaminated food is stunting their growth. Its so clear!

File this one along with the “Scientist” who exclaimed radiation only has affects those with a bad attitude.

I took my labs in university in geography and such skipping the biology labs, wasnt really my thing, but it seems I really missed out as those science classes were clearly the spot for drug experimentation! Who knew!

Yep. After these things are translated into English, they need to be further translated from the language of nukespeak. Here is what I suspect they’re really saying:

Your kids are toast. Let ’em play outside before they get too weak to want to. And have a nice day.

hes not a biologist or specialist in dose management… no qualifications in monitoring disaster zones… and no mention of the totally inadequate testing and releasing of information… gargle? does that work… a guy in kazahkstan said you must drink the vodka to benefit from its healing properties!! just saying!!

Gargle to flush the radiation out of your mouth. This is a known scientific method, also applicaple to smokers. If you gargle after smoking all the nasty stuff from the smoke will be flushed out again. This method is based on the fact that the cavity of your mouth acts as a much better filter than your lungs. The majority of particles and radionuclides will attach themselves to the sides of your mouth, but don’t worry. As soon as you gargle they will all be flushed right back out.

This (anti-nuke????) guy is warning against overreacting. Instead of providing the worried parents with information that will actually improve the chances of avoiding contamination, he sells them this false idea that gargling will do the job. He would help more by staying away from their meetings.

Gosh, you’re right – just gargle and you can still smoke. Shouldn’t that be the new warning label on cigarettes? “Be sure and gargle with a smile after smoking!”

and think of the loss in employment and the funds already allocated to improve the children’s self-esteem and fitness.

Little Miko, won’t you come out to play!

The future of Japan will be determined by how contaminated these children are. Now is the time to do whatever necessary to reduce their exposure. There should be financing for small greenhouses & providing information on gardening & safe seeds. There should be some bagged soil in warehouses. Most countries should have Heritage seeds stored. Yes the water is contaminated but at least there are ways to reduce exposure.

Relocate them to Okinawa at least…or how about Guam or Saipan?? The Americans can give back those territories as easily as they can let 13 million illegals suck our jobs away, drive the wages down for the citizens whose tax dollars pay for their kid’s school lunches and health care for the whole family!!

I personally understand the Truth in a positive mental attitude, but children haven’t fully developed this skill so give the little buggers a fighting chance and REDUCE THEIR RADIATION EXPOSURE NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is radiation? In essence, it is instability. Instability can be transfered from one thing to another. Have you ever been sucker punched? You lose your stability, and it takes a while to regain it back. In the fullness of space and time calculated in halflives, it will take thousands of years for stability in all aspects to gain the upper edge. If we were inanimate objects like rocks and steel, it wouldn’t be such a big deal. Unfortunately, we are complex living creatures that require stable element to sustain lifes functions. You can check out cell division animation here on the internet and appreciate the complexity of the whole business of cell replication. Imagine trying to run your car on a fuel that doesn’t know if it is a gas, solid or liquid. The car won’t run very well. It is an unthinkable scifi tragedy of biblical proportion and the people of japan are the canary in the coal mine. I only say this based on my understanding of atomic theory. It is immho mankind discard the expanding universe and embraces the steady state universe. Steady state encourages better stewardship of the earth.

      hbjon, interesting, I offer this:

      Japan is a process:
      not order from chaos
      or bordering balance
      or balancing inputs diverse,
      not homeostatic
      or isodynamic
but closer to manic or worse,
      having sipped from the chalice
      of nuclear malice
      they’re unbalanced
      and cascading fast,
      with reactor cores crawling
      and half-lives health-mauling
      they’ll either phase-shift
      or crash.

Or-well Or-well. Only time will tell Or-well. Crash or shift with no cars to sell. The people there may go through hell and high water to get their soldering guns hotter all the while being used as cannon fodder of the never ending bombardment of nuclear malice.

  • bincbom

Just like at Chernobyl, the children who are exposed to this horror simply stop growing.

  • fellfromthesun

    No Nukes Plaza:

They do seem to be a real anti-nuclear organization. So I have to wonder why their spokesman doesn’t seem to understand the difference between radiation and germs.
