Title: Update on Bayou Corne Sinkhole
Source: KATC
Date: Aug 15, 2012 6:39p ET

As expected, the surface of the sinkhole that has formed in Bayou Corne has grown over the past few days as the land on the outer edge of the area is sloughing off into the sinkhole. This natural growth of the sinkhole was expected and could continue. Officials monitoring the sinkhole via regular flyovers reported the change in size on Wednesday, but noted that it is still much smaller than the maximum projected size to which scientists said it could grow.

I would start pouring concrete by hellos into the crack quick set stuff to seal it before it takes everything for miles around

Why do you always want to use blind force?

Is this your prefered way to deal with reality?

it is not blind force it is how to properly seal the top of a salt dome. if the dome tilts or takes out the other 2 domes it could be like dominoes lined up one after the other. Blind force would be dynamite. If you seal the dome the problem is solved till they can do other repairs . The top is cracked so you seal the crack.

If you a better suggestion please comment

Agreed — that is a most remarkable statement! But it works for me better than a pat on the head, seems more honest, even if lacks answer to the obvious question it generates.

I wonder if "authorities" have begun to shift away from "don't tell the public" to "we'd better disclose to the public." Maybe a paradigm that assumes "only some of us are equipped to handle the information", which is a very offensive paradigm to me, is weakening.

The earth, its people, and economic interests that have had their frenzied way with all of us, are popping up as corruption scandals all over the place. I think it's only a very small number of giant players who might want secrecy to "return to normal". I think many lesser players caught "inside the goings on" may be feel more free to give as much info as they possibly can.

(So for now, I'm happier with undisclosed "maximum projected size" than other possible statements that could have been made.) :)

if you look at a map of the area you will see oil and gas wells and this salt dome is leaning over it can take out 2 other domes filled with over 6 million barrels of liquid butane and the mix would be biblical & its not natural it was man made screw ups

What is the projected growth of this sink hole? I do believe this is a serious situation for the people there and a deep concern for the people there, or they would not have been evacuated.

From what I understand this has the "potential" of being catastrophic for the US.

I am not a professional in this. Please correct me if I am wrong, or please confirm this is correct, and if you know the answers please respond. Thank you.

1…The salt dome has, human made injected radiation for two years.

    2…Is radiation leaking out?

    3…Salt domes are in clusters

4…There is a butane cavern close by, don't know close.

    5…The sink hole is growing

6…All this does not mix and the worse could be an explosion that would effect a whole lot of States. Not sure what States would be in danger if that happen.

As we know, radiation explosions are not good for anyone.

3…Salt domes are in clusters YES AND ALSO OVER LAP ONE ANOTHER

4…There is a butane cavern close by, don't know close.BUTANE LESS THAN 1,000 FEET AWAY. Also if you look at a map online you will see many oil and gas wells plastered all over the area this could also fall into the hole and there re other domes close in fact another one with 3 MILLION BARRELS of LIQUID GAS. add it all up ONE MASSIVE explosion and fire

5…The sink hole is growing Yes has almost doubled so far since original 2 weeks ago or less

It would be like a 100 Hiroshima bombs going off at once, blowing nuclear hazardous waste into the atmosphere. Depending on the wind, I'd say most of the South, and you'd want to pray it didn't get into the Farm Belt. On the other hand, the Fuku rain has already contaminated the Farm Belt, so it probably doesn't matter what happens with that NHW.

The bigger issue is if the explosion would trigger any methane that is spreading under all the local plates, reaching out to the oil and gas fields in the Gulf.

We are in uncharted waters, WSP, and no one has the slightest clue what will happen. They know what the damage from all the drilling, fracking and dumping is – where the bodies are buried, so to speak – but they don't know how bad it can really get.

Pull up a chair and watch the show. Something's going to happen.

WindorSolarPlease, re your item #1, if we believe "the authorities", the license for the "naturally occurring radioactive materials" allowed "only" 20 cubic feet of "low level" contaminated material. If this is anywhere near the truth, then the radiation aspect of the story might in fact be minor.

They do appear to be worried about something major, but my guess is that it's the butane – or perhaps things not yet disclosed.

I tend to focus on their information-handling methodologies, rather than the specifics of what they tell us. The former is something I can observe directly and perhaps apply to future events. The latter tends to be pretty unreliable, moment by moment, as we've noticed. As for methodology, the main pattern seems to be "today's story will be different tomorrow and different again the next day".

The "growth expected" line is a jaw-dropper, coming out of the blue and after the fact. It would be pretty funny in a novel – not so funny in real life.

Formation of salt dome and rock could have been weakened by radioactive waste that was filled into this dome, now not holding salt but radioactive materials if it is not sealed and the liquid butane explodes from more domes in a biblical fire and explosion and also we have to add the oil and gas wells sucking and falling into the hole and uncovering underground oil deposits , & if it all goes up people will breathe radioactive smoke particles and it will spread downwind of the site it could turn states around this hole into deserted areas. Radiation is not our friend. And the thing would burn for years and years like in Russia again poisoning the whole planet by the smoke and debris given off

there is also a material that is like a slurry that is as strong or stronger than actual rock. It is used by a company in Houston to fill and fix freeway holes. I talked to the men when I saw them using the stuff and it is harder than actual rock when it hardens, that could be used to seal the crack and reinforce the worn out under bedrock formation it is a sealer.

mark: There is radiation in fracked natural gas, right? Do the gas companies filter out the radioactive particles before it gets to my home? This is probably why the inside of my home is as radioactive as outdoors. Should I be looking for an all electric home to buy? (Oh, wait. That would use nuke power, wouldn't it?). :(

    Report Comment

    • Time Is Short Time Is Short

The inside of your home is now as radioactive as outdoors is because of global elevated radiation levels, due to both natural and man-made radiation bioaccumulation over decades and now growing exponentially due to Fukushima.

The only question regarding all this, on an individual basis, is when will it kill us? Between cardiac disease and cancer, plus genetic mutation in our children, the long odds aren't good. The percentages of population that will grow old and die of natural causes are shrinking rapidly.

Hug your kids, tell your loved ones how much you love them, and enjoy what's left.

There is radiation in natural gas, regardless of the source, because of radon, which is itself a gas, and always present, though in varying amounts. Radon comes from various things, including thorium, which is found in granite and many other rocks. Many houses have radon coming into the basement from rocks beneath them. Houses with wells may have radon from the water. And there is a lot of variation; two houses next to each other could be different.
What you have to do, if you are worried about radiation in your house, is to find out what it is and how much of it there is. Where I live, a lot of people have radon problems, and they often vent the basements to take care of it. This reduces radon intrusions into the living areas.
Of course, all houses have some radioactive stuff around. The really important questions are, how much? and what kind?

The gas companies never intended for the public to know about the radiation in natural gas, AND they do absolutely nothing purposefully to try to remove the radiation.

Only if your all-electric home is on the grid AND your grid supplier uses nuke.

I live in a non-nuke jurisdiction, so my grid power comes from other unpalatable sources, mainly coal. Your assumption that grid power = nuke power startled me, since it's not true where I am. The notion inadvertently supports the pro-nuke "base load" argument. Don't want to go there! ;-)

    Off-grid, all electric… Yum!

At this point, I can't tell whether anything is OT or not – it all seems connected somehow. From your story:

""I think you can see there's a huge amount of revenue potential there, but we can't get there…until we can stop the leaks and have a more efficient system," said board president pro tem Raymond Manning.

Selling water was one of the first big ideas former Mayor Ray Nagin floated after he took office in 2002. It met a slow demise. The S&WB had filed for a trademark on the bottle's label in 2002, but canceled it in 2010.

The real issue wasn't the water, St. Martin said, but the packaging. A deal with Dixie Brewing Co. put the water in a plastic container resembling a longneck beer bottle.

"There was an indication along the tourist and convention business that that was an attractive bottle," St. Martin said. "But for parents, it was not how they wanted to introduce it to children and encourage them to drink water.""

Wowsers – anything, anything at all, for a buck!

Maximum size? @HeartoftheRose Sorry to say I think officials said 1 X 3 MILES. Yup, you will be able to see it from space soon. Yes, its a Bayou and for those not living there– guess its not "important" –its a water "feature." Otherwise the debris (radiation NORM?) and dangerous substances could NOT have been stored there. But to the families, way of life, businesses and LIVES affected — its a tremendous and terrible disaster. For all of us.

The NRC is trying to get ahead of all the scrutiny Fukushima has created over NPP damage issues. They want to control the info flow before the workers start tweeting about the problems that the NPP owners have been hiding.

We are at the initial phase of the world's NPPs 'out of warranty' breakdowns. None of these plants were built to acceptable levels of quality engineering standares, none of them were designed to operate this long, and the fix-and-pretend/lie-about-it doesn't work anymore.

We can only conclude that decommissioning is the only rational solution, rather than doubling down after making a bad bet on nuke energy, like the NRC seems to be doing by relicensing old nukes again and again.

UPDATE.. tree that the boat was tied to collapsed into the sinkhole taking the boat with it.

"Also, the boat that was lost in this morning’s event was not an air boat. It was a Joe boat operated by cleanup contractors. The boat was not “sucked into” the sinkhole – when the tree that was tied to it collapsed, the boat was taken down. The cleanup workers were able to gather their monitoring equipment and transfer themselves and their equipment into an airboat also operated by cleanup contractors. Cleanup activity at the site remains suspended until further notice – drilling rig operations are still ongoing and moving forward."
