40-year limit to promote public acceptance of nuclear plants has few, if any, real changes, Mainichi Japan, January 7, 2012:
By instituting a new law that would limit the operation of the country’s nuclear reactors to 40 years, the government appears to be aiming to ease away the public’s distrust toward nuclear power, which has escalated following the outbreak of the Fukushima disaster, and persuade the public to accept the resumed operation of currently stopped reactors.
[...]
Of the 54 commercial nuclear reactors across the country, 48 are now stopped for regular inspections, among other reasons.
[...]
[S]ome METI [Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry] officials say that for all practical purposes, the new 40-year limit, if implemented, would not change anything from the current system, in which nuclear plant operators apply for extensions to continue running reactors every 10 years after they have been in operation for 30 years.
Some major news outlets are taking the bait: Japan Plans to Shut Down All Nuclear Plants by 2050 -Arirang
Mainichi didn’t mention the recent report about another Japan reactor shutting down, bringing the total to 49 stopped and 5 operating: Another Japanese nuclear reactor to be halted -DPA

The central government intends to have them back to running, one way or another, even if they have to ram it down the throats of Japanese people.

Good piece at Truthout today that goes some distance in encapsulating the reason for such distrust.

It is probably another ‘nuke-speak’ way of saying they will start building new reactors….Once they can find suitable genetic material to operate them with or without doughnuts.

These politicians are insane or they have a serious crack cocaine habit that is impeding their thinking. Three unconfined, uncontrolled, ongoing meltdowns, god only knows what is happening in reactor 4, two more reactors with questionable cooling systems – all sitting on a fault line – and yet they are making policies as if nothing has changed. Japan may not exist as a nation or land mass in ten years! There should be no talk of anything except evacuating half the country (the US has millions of abandoned homes) and shutting down and dismantling the giant ticking time bombs waiting to explode with the next disaster.
I cannot believe the ignorance of these government appointees. Every time I read or hear another lie, I just lose it. The truth is so damn obvious that its hard to believe that anyone could actually fall for their lies, but they do. A good friend of men is a mechanical engineer in Vermont. Every time Fukushima comes up (which is a lot – I push it even when people don’t want to hear about it), he’ll look at me and me and say, “Really? They haven’t contained it or put a cover over to yet?) He believes that the radiation in the milk was just a temporary thing back in April, that everything is fine now. He’s not a stupid guy. His denial is intense, so it doesn’t surprise me that Japanese politicians are in denial as well, although hair loss, nails falling off, bruising, lethargy, nose needs and toxic radiation readings might concern them a bit. Maybe they are part cockroach and are not worried about surviving a nuclear meltdown or six.
Money wasted on propagating a nuclear future is a waste of resources that could be used to cover the fucking reactors (even if it is just a temporary solution – stop the contamination of the jet stream!) and evacuate people from the country. At what point will the Japanese government realize that it has no credibility and finally cop to the truth? Will they be proud of their decisions on their…

Great points, but the banksters want their money. (with regards to the foreclosed and abandoned homes). (sarcasm here) I swear, when the U.S. government (our taxpayer money) bailed out the mortgage and financial services industries over those toxic loans, but absolutely failed to do anything about bailing out the people or at least allowing them to refinance the loans at much lower rates or reduce some of the home loan values, I was totally outraged. How dare they!

Hi Kelly Ann Thomas
It would not surprise me that some higher ups in every Country has a drug problem.
Most people in higher positions had to claw their way to the top making deals with each other, instead of doing what is right for the environment and for the public.
Some higher ups have no conscience, they only have their goals, greed, and power control issues.
Not all higher ups are like this, but they are getting to be fewer .

ADMIN, I hear you. You need a “MIKE CHECK” during one of the candidates’ NH events to ask about Fukushima and nuclear energy. I doubt if the MSM would report it, though. Also a huge nuclear power protest in NH or SC would be effective.
During the debates tonight, someone should yell, “Mike Check” and ask about Fukushima.

How can anyone trust nuclear power, when it can’t be controlled, it causes destruction, irreversible damage to the environment, and that it kills?
