SOURCE: Residents near Fukushima mountains face nuclear recontamination every rainfall, Mainichi, October 11, 2011

As the crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Plant drags on, worries are growing particularly among Fukushima Prefecture residents over drawn-out and in some cases apparently futile nuclear decontamination operations.

The unease is especially strong in areas in and around mountains that must be repeatedly decontaminated, as every rainfall brings a new batch of radioactive substance-contaminated leaves and soil washing down from the hills. [...]

[R]esidents [are] faced with regular recontamination after every major rainfall [...]

The city of Fukushima decontaminated its Onami and Watari district in July and August after a surge in local radiation levels. In the week following the end of the operation, the city took fresh radiation readings at 885 points, of which seven actually registered levels exceeding those found before the decontamination. One gutter measured even showed a rise from 3.67 microsieverts per hour before the cleanup to 4.63 after the work.

[T]here is also the issue of the important natural roles played by forests, such as collecting water that eventually ends up as well water. [...]

Unfortunately Japan will come to realise decontamination efforts are futile considering the massive contamination that already took place. Japan is covered by hills, mountains and lush forests for the most part and those cannot be decontaminated. However the contamination of these places will slowly spread elsewhere mostly via water movements (steam, cloud, rain).
While businesses and politicians are already hoping for land grab and corporate take-overs of tsunami affected area, they don’t seem to have any clue as to the kind of nuclear holocaust that is unfolding before their very eye. The government should create a scientific team whose goal would be to forecast the contamination and how society should prepare for it, instead of doing completely useless things and always playing catch up.

Great comment. The same could be said of the US Gov. While they sit in silence, this fall and winter will be RADIATED seasons. Wouldn’t it be prudent to ADVISE and PREPARE us for what’s in store. Instead there is nothing being said. Nuclear Holocaust is right.

I wonder when some of the American presidential candidates are going to start getting shoutouts at their rallies like: “Did you know your daughters are being exposed daily to Fukushima radiation!”. It isngoing to happen and become a campaign issue eventually… Way too many months to next November. That elephant in the room is going to lay a big stinky dookie on the floor soon.

I have yet to get a REAL response. It’s always a form letter of sorts that never truly addresses the Radiation coming from Japan. Got to keep trying though. When Knocking on the Devil’s Door came out, I sent that too. http://t.co/Gsq87zGw

I watched that video this afternoon–it was very interesting. I thought the most interesting part was the discussion of the political corruption enabling the nuke industry (in part 6). I knew about Obama’s links to it, but I was not aware of Hilary Clinton’s connections with Entergy. The deeper people look into this stuff, the dirtier and dirtier it gets.

And sadly, the corruption is no doubt on both sides–the industry doubtless hedges its bets by funding candidates of both parties. As long as every candidate hopes to be the recipient of some of that money, not one of them is going to take a position opposing the expansion of nuclear power. Even those who claim they are committed libertarians advocate more nuclear power, despite the huge government assistance they receive. If anyone should support a more decentralized approach to energy production, they ought to.

So, we write them the scorching truth and they send us back pabulum. They do not care what we have to say now, but maybe they will soon be inquiring what is on our minds.

Turn all those up for reelection in 2012 OUT.

Just a simple question: Can you clean the snow during a snowstorm? It is a nuclear storm and continues. Rains and winds redistribute. Stop the storm first!

    • What this article did NOT address is the continual release of toxic radioactive materials from the Fukushima plant, 24 hours a day. It is like an invisible waterfall coming out of it, that kills everything it touches.

The government and the company involved keep making it sound like the plant is all benign, covered up, safe and normal. They say it is ok to come back and live around the plant. There is no more toxic release of any kind, according to their news media releases.

This ‘mystery’ radiation must be just showing up due to magic spells from pixie fairies in the forest, because the nuke plant is totally innocent.

What happens to the radiation coming out of Fukushima? Who is measuring it? Who is tracking it? Who is keeping track of the total amount released?

Where is it going? What is in this invisible cloud of radioactive materials?

No one seems to know or care…

+100 This needs to be brought to the comments again and again. Decontamination efforts are a losing battle when the radioactive releases are unabated.

Having meaningful measurements daily is also needed. How can a concerned government warn people about normal rain flooding if they said it was raining daily, but never told them how many inches?

The problem is the Japanese authorities are not concerned enough about public health issues…only their own business and political futures.

    • Could it be that instead of radiation coming out of the ‘forest’, the rain is actually washing radioactive materials out of (gasp) THE AIR? What if Fukushima is actually still releasing MASSIVE amounts of radioactive materials into the air and that is washed out by the rain, and brought back to the ground?

That makes too much sense though… That cannot be… We have to blame the bees, the forest, the animals, and those wild eyed conspiracy theorists, who think radiation comes from melted down nuclear plants. What a crazy, lunatic idea… Ha ha ha… to think that nuclear radiation could actually come from a melted down nuclear plant!!! Anyone who thinks that is CRAZY, and needs to be committed to an insane asylum.

Yes the radiation is coming out of the air in waves, some days heavier than others. But the government is not going to measure quantity, content, or wind patterns except in very general terminology. They don’t want to enlighten the little folks!

    • Can someone please tell me now ‘old leftover radiation’ washing out of the forest from the leaves and trees, gets up into the gutters on top of roofs, inside towns?

“One gutter measured even showed a rise from 3.67 microsieverts per hour before the cleanup to 4.63 after the work.”

I guess logic is not needed in Japan anymore.

Isotopes are carried excellently on particles small and smaller than dust. The forest is more like a concentrated way of them collecting. They are also in the air aplenty, forest nearby or not!

Thank you for contacting me regarding nuclear energy I would like to take this opportunity to address your concerns. As you know, on March 11th, Japan experienced a massive earthquake, creating a tsunami wave that struck the small island. The wave crashed into a nuclear power plant in Fukushima resulting in a nuclear emergency. There are important lessons to be learned from this event, and it is important we ensure our nuclear facilities in the United States are as safe as possible.
The tragedy in Japan serves as a reminder that safety regulations must be in place when nuclear power is generated. Thankfully, the United States has been a leader in nuclear safety standards, requiring nuclear power plants to have secondary hydrogen containment buildings which allow the pressure to slowly be released from nuclear reactors. This safety mechanism was not present in the Fukushima reactor, which prevented the reactors from venting hydrogen, resulting in the explosion of the reactors.
Additionally, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requires nuclear plants in the United States to have a back-up power supply to cool nuclear rods contained in the plant. This back-up power supply must be contained in a fire and water proofed area. Had these been in plce at Fukushima, fires resulting from the tsunami would not have disrupted the back-up power supply and the rods would have continued to cool, preventing a meltdown of the nuclear cores.

“Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requires nuclear plants in the United States to have a back-up power supply to cool nuclear rods contained in the plant.”

Actually, Fukushima had eight hours of battery backup, while most U.S. plants only have four hours of battery backup (according to David Lochbaum, Union of Concerned Scientists).

        Report Comment

    • Shortly after the Japanese crisis, the NRC launched a task force that will conduct both a short term and long term analysis of the nuclear crisis in Japan. It is important that we ensure our national nuclear facilities are safe so that the same tragedy in Japan does not happen here at home. However, we must not shut down our clean and fully functional nuclear facilities in a rash, kneejerk reaction.
Again, thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with me. It is an honor and privilege to serve the people of Florida. If I can be of any further help to you, please do not hesitate to contact me.

It is the nature of monkeys to behave this way.
You can make a monkey a King , Queen a CEO or President even Pope but still just a monkey.
A short while ago we were cannibalistic barbarians who destroyed all the good peaceful monkeys, stole from the weak and enslaved the working class. Now we expect the ones who achieved their status from preying on the 99% to become benevolent peaceful and caring.

Local fire departments should have geiger counters. They got them after 911. One of the counters a local department here had, was sitting on the top shelf of a computer desk. They said, and it did appear, to be a refurbished Cold War model. They said they hadn’t used it. One fireman said they had not received any training in how to use it. I find it hard to believe that firemen, in their spare time, have not at least experimented around with it. Wished they would have offered to fire it up, to see if it was more sensitive than my own small unit. The ones people were being checked with early on in Fukushima appeared to have much larger receiving units, probably much more sensitive.

Follow up of what happened in the process of a simple inquiry if they have checked rain lately:
Fire department says they don’t know how to use and haven’t used their two geiger counters, but that FEMA guy in town would be interested in the subject, and has detector.
FEMA guy says he has no detectors, just received them and gave to mayor for distribution to fire department, and has not used one, but mayor would be interested in subject.
Major says he has no geiger counter and knows nothing about them, never used one. Tired clueless look on face while hanging half outside bulletproof security door to ‘visit’ with me in the 8 by 10 lobby.

Moral of the story: ‘government in action’ adds up to inaction. Too busy. Don’t care. No curiosity. No knowledge of current affair. Would not do anything that might rock a boat somewhere, might affect job and retirement.

As we know from Fukushima, public officials, at least many of them, would deny any problem, even with a metallic taste in their mouth and their kids’ noses bleeding.
