A mind-boggling 40,000 trillion becquerels of radioactive cesium, or twice the amount previously thought, may have spewed from the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant after the March 11 disaster, scientists say.

Michio Aoyama, a senior researcher at the Meteorological Research Institute, released the finding at a scientific symposium in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, on Feb. 28.

The figure, which represents about 20 percent of the discharge during the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster, is twice as large as previous estimates by research institutions both in Japan and overseas. [...]

While the latest study said 15-20 quadrillion becquerels of cesium-137 was released into the atmosphere, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency estimated the amount at 8.8 quadrillion becquerels. [...]

    the article itself, goes on to say, "While the latest study said 15-20 quadrillion becquerels of cesium-137 was released into the atmosphere, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency estimated the amount at 8.8 quadrillion becquerels. Similar data released by other researchers both in Japan and overseas ranged between 7 quadrillion and 35 quadrillion becquerels."

    These numbers are…STAGGERING!

    BTW. The attempts to cover the sea bed with cement are not going smoothly. "Choppy waters due to adverse weather conditions had obstructed the work."

      Covering the sea bed with concrete is the most silliest thing i have heard.
      Concrete is much heavier than water or sand on its own and will merely sink……….
      Then it will displace and disturb the settle materials………
      Then particles will be mobilised again…
      I have worked on many a building site and understand the dynamics.
      On this i am an expert !!!!
      When pouring concrete into mud……………
      The mud rises to the top………..
      Concrete is very heavy……………..

      Buckyballs (Buckminsterfullerene) is a "new" form of carbon molecule
      Note that the Uranium variant of Buckminsterfullerene is a very new phenomena that as far as I know is as recent as (and directly the result of) Fukushima. It came about from the use of the salt water to cool the spent fuel and reactors/cores. The direct contact of the salt water on the Uranium was the problem. Fukushima is probably the first time that such a combination has happened to the extent that the result was measured/measurable.

    Fukushima released a relatively small amount of cesium compared to other isotopes. Chernobyl released a relatively large amount of cesium compared to other isotopes. If you look only at the cesium figures, Chernobyl was worse. and this is the figure that the press is keying on to call Fukushima the second worst nuclear release in history.

    It is the xenon, strontium, and iodine release that makes Fukushima the worst release in history, not the cesium. However, because xenon and iodine are so short lived, and because strontium is so costly to detect effectively and positively, they were able to cover up those figures in the media.

    So cesium is the news, because it looks better to be less than Chernobyl somewhere.

    “A retrospective view of the Chernobyl accident of Apr 26, 1986 assesses the total radiation release at about 100 megaCuries or 4 x 1018 becquerels, including some 2.5 MCi of cesium-137. The cesium is the most serious release in terms of long term consequences. The total release was around 4% of the total accumulated activity of the core and compares to a release of 15 Ci at Three Mile Island. The release was then about 7 million times that at TMI. Anspaugh, et al. suggest that essentially all the noble gases and about half of the volatile elements (iodine-131, cesium-134 and cesium-137) were released. The cesium release from all of the atmospheric weapons tests is estimated to be about 30 MCi. The noble gas releases were estimated by Levi to be 45 MCi of xenon-133 and 5 MCi of krypton-85. About 3-5% of the core inventory of the relatively refractory elements such a strontium, plutonium, and ruthenium were released, much more than from a light water reactor meltdown.”

    We need to put in cheap residential wind and solar power, and solar domestic hot water, with fuel cell backup. Disconnect from our homes the tainted nuke power from utilities. Tell the utilities we won't patronise them because they insist on nukes. Fight them in our local area. Fight them nationally. Stop poisoning our planet!

      @philipupnorth: what you suggest is noble but inefficient. You have to take such steps on a mass scale, to be truly effective. There are billions who depend on electric energy sources. Replacing nuclear power in a hodgepodge manner will take just as many decades as was used to put nuclear power in place. This must be done on a large scale, with the assistance of all concerned parties. We're taking a resurgence of jobs on a scale unknown since the great wars. We're taking massive investments in R&D, into the development of long-term-survivable renewable energy systems. It would be a golden age for all of us…

        Quite correct, Aftershock. Last I heard, the economy needed to be re-energized. Millions of jobs. Distributed power, Bloom Boxes at every office, factory, and mall. Wind and solar everywhere. Payoff would be free fuel, in sunshine and wind. Make it cheap, put it everywhere. Install current technology now, with R&D bringing prices down later. New tax incentives needed. Community involvement. Decades of economic prosperity. Decommission all atomic plants now. This, too, will add millions of new jobs. Golden Age for all.

    As an American downwind of this, I am beginning to think that getting this Fukushima problem fixed is a much higher priority than anything in the Middle East.

    We have a real Japan problem right now. Iran, by contrast is a maybe problem.

    These are very desperate times for Japan and now for the rest of the world.

    It will be very hard to determine the truth from any source in the future.

    We are in a place where modern mankind has never been before and I am afraid this disaster and certain types of nuclear radiation contamination will last from many thousands of years on the surface of our Mother Earth.

    Best not to speak very loudly about these pending world holocaust matters around any of our children, sshhh..

    Silently weep for all of our futures and all the other life forms on our Mother Earth.

    But only weep once the children are tucked into their beds and they have fallen into a deep sleep.

    Keep trying to dodge it and get GE and the government into answering for their sins. I quit building this crap back in 1975 and they should have also. We all knew about spent fuel needs demineralized water changes to be stored, for thousands of years and more. Breeder reactor programs worsen the containment problems. Take suppliments and if others lack the attantion span, sit on them if they are family and let them go if they want. Cancers are brewing.
