Modeling the spread of radioactivity in seawater, Massachusetts Institute of Technology News, Dec. 21, 2011:
[...] Researchers Changsheng Chen of the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth and Robert Beardsley of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute are investigating where that radioactivity may spread, using a mathematical model they developed in part through funding by the MIT Sea Grant College Program. Early estimates by oceanographers Chen and Beardsley suggest that the radioactive particles would disperse throughout the ocean differently at different depths. In some cases, contaminated seawater would reach the western coast of the United States in as little as five years. [...]
The mathematical model that Chen and Beardsley created and use, known as the Finite Volume Community Ocean Model, or FVCOM, has been in existence for about a decade. Unlike other ocean models, this program can be used to examine what happens to different parts of the environment at different levels of detail. In other words, the researchers can use very small grid cells to compute information about what’s going on in the complex near-shore ocean environment, and at the same time they can use big grid cells to simulate, in broad strokes, the calmer currents of the open ocean. Has anyone seen the rendering engine from Australia? It uses “atoms”, or tiny particles instead of polygons to build scenes on your computer screen. I think with some physics applied it would be a great tool for predictive modeling.
Why don’t they TEST the actual water off our coast? It seems like a national security issue to me. A much larger national security issue than the homegrown “terrorism” DHS keeps spouting off about. Why use just models when we can physically measure it now and into the future. Sounds like it is already here, to me, since I have yet to hear of testing our coastline.

That radiation is already going into food chains. It has just started to begin its way into fish. Imagine how messed up the ocean is going to be when the real levels of damage to the food supply becomes apparent. There is already reports of billions of becquerels in river washout. The sea life really does not stand much of a chance.

Seems they left the subtraction piece from there estimates?
Just subtract 4years 350 days and it should correct there estimate to within a few days. On the other hand if I am wrong….. I guess there was no radioactivity released when the reactors were completely destroyed during explosions and fires (one of which was possibly a nuclear explosion in a reactor that was using MOX fuel?)

Exactly..In the words of BP OIL “the gulf is a huge body of water…”the Pacific is a big ocean and when you throw in radioactive material it will get carried away….carried to California lets suppose. So instead of having to worry about contaminating the land you only have to imagine that the radioactivity goes away…over the waves…bye bye…don’t care where you are going…just go away from here….
Now if this was Iran sending nuclear material all over the middle east…hmmm wonder how long that would last?

This is tangential, but I keep wondering about the big cluster of debris from the tsunami that is approaching the West Coast. Why are there no satellite pictures of it? Why no aerial photographs? All I ever see are pictures of stuff leaving Japan and pictures of stuff arriving in British Columbia and Washington State. But no pics of the debris field in the ocean. There are old reports from a Russian ship and more recent ones from the US 7th Fleet, but still no pictures have been made available.
Surely there are such pictures. Are they being withheld to avert panic?

Are you sure you would want the location of your mother or father, sister or brother, son or daughters body(s) up for grabs? I wouldn’t. I would hope the U.S. government could discreetly collect them and ship them home to proper burial. Don’t think for a minute Cindy that there aren’t people that would go and take one of those bodies or photograph it and post it all over the web.

Ooops….I meant to say NOAA denied there was a “field” of debris, and the stuff washing up now might not be Fuku shiite, and they contend it will take two years (the orange line) for the tsunami/radioactive debris to wash up on the Canadian coast.

The surface water will reach the west north american continent at about the same speed as the debree field. All that radiation blew out to sea and whatever landed in the water will come in with the tide. The great majority of particulate material is nano small. It’s still pretty much in the top 3 or 4 feet of ocean depth.

The debris is already here, the Iodine-131 levels were already measured way over scale here in B.C. (Burnaby) back in April, 2011.
They should be measuring like crazy – fish, seawater, soil, food, everything that is already here, not the stuff that will get here 5 years from now.

It was reported in our Olympian bay on March 28th.

Is this the twilight zone? What exactly carried the debris that is arriving here in BC from Japan? The Ocean currents, no? So the ocean currents carrying the debris arrive here 4 plus years sooner than the radiation particles in those same ocean currents?

All north Pacific fish have given me metal-mouth since April.
The most active fishing port in the US is in the Aleutian islands of Alaska, and it had the highest iodine and cesium in the air… the rain and snow has contaminated the ocean even in areas that the pool from the Fuku dumping hasn’t affected yet.
South Pacific fish should still be ok. The north Atlantic will become contaminated before the ocean south of the equator does.

@truthseek. The earth caught in a great nuclear trap. The 375000 MW nuclear reactors on the earth have usurped 1.5 billion cubic meters of drinking water(and salts) daily and release them back with radionuclides.This has been going on for 65 years. This has taken away drinking water from 2 billion people and millions of animals and marine creatures. But living beings do work at 200 watts peak power per head and so their capacity is 400000 megawatts(More than the nuclear capacity) clean power and corresponding energy. They return all they take in acceptable form to the soil via composting toilets or as healthy outputs for others. The 7 billion people can cooperate in many ways with the bottom line being a clean environment. See the rice sowing in the seasons? See the cotton pickings and the baskets of tea and the fruits and vegetables and salads being plucked? Now the whole world is being polluted by modern civilization’s cumulative dynamics which need not be. Thus there is an alternative way which is healthy and long lasting which is non-invasive of the earth. Stop nuclear. It consumes more energy than it gives and gives poisons infinitely more than nature and reconcentrated by orders of magnitude per trophic level and lasting for billions of years, perhaps after almost all of us are gone.
