Multiple marine scientists say Fukushima plume is at West Coast — S.F. Chronicle reports “radiation levels from Fukushima on California coast have gone down”

Published: January 9th, 2014 at 1:05 am ET

San Francisco Chronicle, Jan. 8, 2014: Scientists reported Wednesday that low levels of radiation from Japan’s Fukushima disaster first detected off the California coast two years ago have been declining ever since [… Prof. Nicholas Fisher] said that continued sampling of low radiation levels from Fukushima on the California coast shows “they have gone down ever since.”

There appears to be confusion about the radioactive plume crossing the Pacific to the West Coast. The leading edge of the plume has only just recently been reported to be arriving at the North American coast. Which means whatever contamination that was detected “off the California coast two years ago [and has] been declining ever since” is not related to the Fukushima plume crossing the Pacific.

Reports of the recent arrival of the Fukushima plume on the West Coast of North America are coming from government-funded scientists. Here’s a few examples:

  1. Oct. 15, 2013 — Report by scientists with Fisheries and Oceans Canada: Fukushima plume “was detectable along the entire Line P in June, 2013” which extends to the Canadian west coast near the U.S. border
  2. Nov. 20, 2013 — Marine Chemist on CBC Radio: Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada is “starting to detect the presence of the plume of radioactivity […] it is making its way towards our coast.”
  3. Nov. 27, 2013 — Marine Radiochemist on KPFA Radio: “I’ve seen some Canadian data that the front edge of that plume is starting to show up […] confirming what the models predict”

Multiple experts have voiced concerns about the levels of Fukushima nuclear waste contained in the plume:

  1. Douglas Dasher, researcher at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks: “The levels they are projecting in some of the models are in the ballpark of what they saw in the North Pacific in the 1960s.”
  2. Arnie Gundersen, nuclear expert: “Radiation that went into the Pacific from largely French tests, but also American tests, is smaller than what is going into the Pacific now from Fukushima […] Fukushima Daiichi’s plume that’s heading towards the West Coast of the US has about 10 times more radiation in that wave than what we had already done from bomb testing. We further contaminated the Pacific, much more so than the bomb testing.”
  3. John Kelley, professor emeritus at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks: “The data they will need is not only past data but current data, and if no one is sampling anything then we won’t really know it, will we? The general concern was, is the food supply safe? And I don’t think anyone can really answer that definitively.”

2021 at depth of 150-250m (Rossi et al. 2013)

The contamination is forecast to last for about 10 years off California’s coast. Yet the model only takes into account the first few weeks of Fukushima releases into the Pacific, though plant officials have recently admitted hundreds of tons of contaminated water have been flowing into the Pacific since the first days of the disaster nearly 3 years ago.

Well well, what do we have here? Why, its another thread destroyed by the shills.

Here's a clue, IGNORE them. Do not try to educate them with the obvious. They could care less.

Socref; if you really want to learn about Fukushima first hand go to Japan.

Perhaps you can really find out what's happening behind their veil of
secrecy. We all here are trying to figure it all out with the limited and
censored information offered to us. I do not see you contributing anything
to our understanding of what happened and is happening there. You
would be commanding a lot of respect from all of us if there was something
of value in all of your comments here. You just don't get it!

I hope we can all agree on some basic things.
    1. Something like 300+ tons of irradiated water is entering the Pacific every day via Fukushimas' three core meltdown.
    2. Bio-accumulation of these isotopes is amplified the further up the food chain you are.
    3. Any amount of exposure to radioactive elements has a chance to cause mutations or death to living cells/tissue.
    4. Man-made radioactive isotopes have been falling out of our atmosphere since the first atomic detonation, but has been greatly increased since 2011 via the explosions and subsequent daily steam release at Fukushima.
    5. The entire world is now exposed to these unnecessary cancer causing elements thanks to pro-nuke government, schools, and industries.

So why do anything to dilute or question these facts? Sure we come here "to learn about fukushima," but by diverting the arguments, and steering the conversation into the proverbial weeds, or to cast fog and doubt to these facts and understandings, goes against the greater purpose. To be anything but anti-nuke is to be against the survival of life. Nuclear technology never promotes life, only electricity and weapons. Some may argue electricity promotes life, but it only promotes convenience. And weapons are obviously not pro-life.

If the entire world nuclear energy production is less than 3%, I say the risks far outweigh the rewards. Shut them all down!

They say they're leaking 300 tons of water a day, but that doesn't count the groundwater flow, fresh water outlets… springs… in the ocean floor off of the shore there, where the groundwater is released into the ocean.

Still happening aint it. Dropsila and dropzilla. Reminds me of a story.
A friend was in an abusive relationship. Her partner seemed so reasonable but he was an abuser. She was always trying to leave but ?…as a skilled, well established, respectable smooth talker/stalker, he always somehow managed to entice her back in, and there it was , he was in her life AGAIN. she finally went to therapy. She shared with me what she learned… Even while learning to forgive herself:

"I was dancing my half of the dance", she said. "He was abusing me but i would respond and get hooked into the bad patterns, thru talking to him and being seduced and hurt and outraged. I had to stop the dancing. I had to let go of my part of the dance."

Hell the lady changed her phone number, email addy and locks. Police stay of protection. He finally went away. he found another person to entice and engage and charm and argue and abuse. And he is such a nice guy on the surface. His words and behavior seems so civil and reasonable. He cons so many. i just avoid him like the plague.

Seems to me we are being stalked and it is working. I have been as guilty as the next. Now i am not reading those posts by the dropsilla entities. I am trying one screen at a time to ignore them. I want to stay on topic. i do not want to read the script going back and forth with a stalker. Like one day at a time? One screen at a time. 1. we admit we have a problem and we are powerless before the urge to debunk people who lie to protect nuclear deathmachines
        2. we come to believe that a power greater than ourselves (like the community here of wise folks) can help us regain our sanity
        3. made a decision to turn our hearts and hands to protecting human and earth life as we understand it, against nukes
        4. make a fearless and moral inventory of ourselves and our ability to stay on track in the face of huge annoyance and manufactured lies
        5. admitted to the community, ourselves and our pets that we fell off topic
        6. were ready to have the enenews community correct us so we can go back to work telling the truth in all ways possible
        7. humbly asked our true peers here to help keep us on track
8.made a list of the nuclear meltdowns and apologists we had tried to harm, and vowed to harm them in more effective ways with on topic arguments…excellent links, and creative rediculousness
9.made direct amends except when to do so would support the shills or confuse the newcomers
10 continue with personal inventory and when we were off topic promptly admitted it (i'm here!)
        11. sought through concentration study and practice to strengthen connection to the community of support on enenews and elsewhere so we have the wisdom and courage to spread the truth, debunk lies and make change for the better on this planet

  • OK guys and gals, enough silly banter. Here is some real data that I got out of a 300 page gov report, yes, it is annoying to grind though.

It shows that the nuclide deposition from Fukushima NOW (beyond a shadow of a doubt, using CS134/CS137 ratios) in a place 2000 miles away in Alaska was equal to the nuclides from a large atomic bomb hitting that same spot in 1969, measured back then.

Simply the Cesium in 2011 was 13750 pCi/kG
Before Fukushima in 1997 is was around 42 pCi/kG

After 3 bombs were set off in 1969, the tests showed 8000 to 27000 pCi/kG.

Seriously, it is hard to believe. Read it, ask questions, I will explain.

I promised myself I would not engage in or entertain the mental masturbations of denial splattered on the pages of this kick ass site by our resident "stuck in the 90's" trouble maker. But will post when possible information to counter his incessant insanity*.

Here is his latest "expert" brain fart *1) not all levels of radiation are dangerous

Environmental Protection Agency: “ … any exposure to radiation poses some risk, i.e. there is no level below which we can say an exposure poses no risk. ”

Nuclear Regulatory Commission: “ any amount of radiation may pose some risk for causing cancer … any increase in dose, no matter how small, results in an incremental increase in risk. ”

National Academy of Sciences: “ … it is unlikely that a threshold exists for the induction of cancers… ” (John LaForge: Dangerous Disinformation About Radiation, 2011)

“ No amount of radiation is safe. Every dose is an overdose. ”
    – Nobel Laureate George Wald, in 1953.

“ There is no safe level of radionuclide exposure, whether from food, water or other sources. Period. ”
    – Jeff Patterson, DO, immediate past president of Physicians for Social Responsibility.

“ There is no safe dose of radiation since radiation is cumulative. Harm in the form of excess human cancer occurs at all doses of ionizing radiation, down to the lowest conceivable dose and dose rate. ”
    – John Gofman, Ph.D., M.D. in Radiation and Human Health.

    You decide.

      Bonus quote.

“ It is also notable that the thyroid radiation exposures after Chernobyl were virtually all internal, from radioiodines… Thus, the increase in thyroid cancer seen after Chernobyl is attributable to ingested or inhaled radioiodines. A comparable burden of excess thyroid cancers could conceivably accrue should U.S. populations be similarly exposed in the event of a nuclear accident. This potential hazard highlights the value of averting such risk by using KI as an adjunct to evacuation, sheltering, and control of contaminated foodstuffs. ”
      – Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

    • socref

I disagree with the "any radiation is dangerous" meme. You all cited bananas. I didnt.

        • American Phoenix57

The dirty secret that the largely cheerleading function of mainstream media conceals on behalf of the nuclear industry is that exceedingly low levels of internalized (inhaled or swallowed) radioisotopes may do exponentially more harm than present radiation risk models allow for.

In order to understand the absurdity of drawing a one-to-one comparison between external and internal radiation exposures, Professor Chris Busby (Scientific Secretary for the European Committee on Radiation Risk) draws the analogy between direct comparison between external radiation and internal radiation exposures with warming oneself in front of a fire and eating a red hot coal. Indeed, the public is being lulled into pulling up a comfy chair to warm themselves by the radioactive fire of a disaster the scale of which this world has never known before.

“ The nuclear industry is waging a war against humanity. This war has now entered an endgame which will decide the survival of the human race. Not from sudden nuclear war. But from the on-going and incremental nuclear war which began with the releases to the biosphere in the 60s of all the atmospheric test fallout, and which has continued inexorably since then through Windscale, Kyshtym, 3-Mile Island, Chernobyl, Hanford, Sellafield, La Hague, Iraq and now Fukushima, accompanied by parallel increases in cancer rates and fertility loss to the human race. ”
          – Professor Chris Busby

I love Busby and his way cool cap.

Thyroid controls vital body functions and must be removed after being radiated.

  • American Phoenix57

The size and scope of this global nuclear poisoning is being quashed by a silly string of prostitute scientist and politicians whose funding and careers stand to be terminated and humiliated if they do not tell the lies and turn a blind eye. These clowns of science and politics are trying to tell us that the Fukushima radiation is the equivalent to eating a banana or flying across the country.

When pundits talk about passive radiation exposure from a long airplane trip or eating a banana being of similar radiotoxicity to the kind presented by a nuclear meltdown, they are reinforcing the fundamental myth of the nuclear age: that releases like Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and now Fukushima are concerns to health only as long as they involve external doses of radiation high enough to cause acute damage.

    • American Phoenix57

1986 Chernobyl – 195 days till containment. A single uranium powered nuclear plant without plutonium (MOX) fuel and NO spent fuel pools, located far from any ocean in the middle of what was then the Soviet Socialist Republic of Ukraine was running at low power had a partial meltdown, exploded and burned for ten days until an army of half a million “liquidators” buried it and entombed it in a concrete sarcophagus. It sent a plume of radioactive particles 2 kilometers into the atmosphere – equivalent in toxicity to 400 Hiroshima bombs. It contaminated forty percent of Europe and Central Asia. A thousand kilometers in all directions are permanently contaminated. It has slowly killed a million people and destroyed the DNA of millions more.

      • American Phoenix57

2011 Fukushima – 1034 days still no containment. Three uranium and plutonium powered nuclear plants and four large spent fuel pools, located on the shores of Eastern Japan were running at full power, had triple "China Syndrome" meltdowns, exploded and two hundred tons of radioactive fuel burned up into the atmosphere and burned down into the groundwater aquifer that empties into the Pacific Ocean. For over two and a half years an army of ten thousand down on their luck contract workers have tried to mop it up and then filter and save the mop water. It didn’t work. It can never be stopped. It sent a plume of radioactive particles 5 kilometers into the atmosphere – equivalent in toxicity to 6000+ Hiroshima bombs. It has permanently contaminated 50 percent of Japan and portions of East Asia. Three thousand square kilometers of the Pacific and growing are permanently contaminated. It has begun to slowly kill millions of people in the northern hemisphere and destroy the DNA of billions more for generations to come.

sources and citations intentionally withheld to irritate banana suckers.

Apparently the nuke industry, unable to stop the flow of radioactivity at the Fuku plant, has chosen instead to stop the flow of information by sending it's henchmen in.

Some of them claim that there is absolutely no harm whatsoever from radiation. It's GOOD for you, they say! Well then, why do NPPs have those thick concrete and steel monoliths around them if they are sooo safe, hum? Why aren't you advocating just tearing them down? Go on, I dare you…

Like old Ronnie Raygun might have said: "Tear those walls down!"

Here's what I have to say to the nukers:

When you can actually STOP the multiple meltdowns in Japan rather than just armchair quarterbacking, when you can completely CLEAN UP that country AND the Pacific Ocean, when you can REVERSE all the health damage caused to human and non-human life from this disaster, when you put your money where your mouth is and PERSONALLY VOLUNTEER to clean up this godawful mess, When you decide to get a bit of HONESTY for a change and TAKE RESPONSIBILITY not only for forcing this damned technology on the world, but also for LYING about the damaging effects of radiation, THEN, AND ONLY THEN WILL I LISTEN TO YOU.

Anything less that that and you are just howling in the wind.

    Ball's in your court…
