NBC News: “Grisly disease decimating starfish populations… from Orange County to Alaska” — Scientists: Alarm as they began eating each other, then melting away — Similar problem on East Coast observed since 2011 — Now spreading at “scary” rate (VIDEO)

NBC News, Oct. 28, 2013 (Emphasis Added): A grisly disease is decimating starfish populations on both North American coasts. From Orange County to Alaska, and along the rocky shores of New England, leggy echinoderms are shedding their limbs and “melting” away. […] on the East Coast, this year’s dying is a second chapter to a die off that started in 2010 […] “A year after that we started seeing animals that have been exhibiting this ‘wasting disease.’ It appears to have [been] developing over the past few years,” Gary Wessel, a professor at Brown University who is investigating the disease, told NBC News. […] What’s different this year is the speed at which the mystery ailment is zipping through starfish populations, leaving tattered limbs and spilled guts in its wake. […] “The spread — that’s a little bit scary for me,” Wessel said.

Monterey County Weekly, Updated Oct. 31, 2013: Allison Gong often keeps live sea stars for her college biology classes at CSU Monterey Bay. Early this fall, however, she was alarmed to find her animals eating each other. Even worse, they were beginning to disintegrate. “Healthy stars don’t get eaten by other stars, so seeing cannibalism always raises the ‘uh-oh’ flag,” says Gong, associate research biologist at UC Santa Cruz’s Long Marine Laboratory. “Then, the stars began dropping arms and melting away.” […] Over the past few months, scuba divers in British Columbia as well as researchers in Alaska, Washington and California have reported hundreds of melting sea stars from at least 10 different species. The timing of these outbreaks suggests they are connected, and researchers are concerned about the potential regional impacts. […] “This star is a keystone species; its absence causes a change in the makeup of the biological community” [said Gong] […] 10/31/13 UPDATE: As of late this week, researchers at Hopkins Marine Station report numerous sick sea stars in the kelp forest adjacent to the Station, confirming sightings earlier this month […]

    • pinksailmatt pinksailmatt

Why would a bio agent be on both the Atlantic and Pacific sides all at once? The Atlantic has had BP's Oil…the Pacific Fuk's Rads. Both have been and are still being stressed. Maybe it is as simple as that. Stress.

How would two separate Events differing both in time and nature produce the exact same abnormal effect? Even if the Atlantic die off was as a result of fall out, a trail of west to east water poisonings must be expected.

They've been dumping tritium and nuclear waste into the Atlantic Ocean for 70 years. The Atlantic is also radioactive. And there have been radioactive rainouts over the Atlantic from Fukushima radiation and all the US and Canadian and European and Asian nuclear reactors and depleted uranium weapons since March, 2011.

I believe this is after and incredible over-population of starfish. There was fear that it would wipe out the shellfish population (Starfish feed on shellfish). Could it be that nature corrects for an overage of starfish by making them feeding on each other?

Twice in my life I have seen overabundance of wild rabbits in the American Southwest. Both times they all seemed to vanish at the same time. Some said it was tularemia. I find that hard to believe that the entire population could be infected over such a large area at once.

In the laboratory, over population of rats is solved by them turning on each other. In other cases, disease pops up.

Of course there are the lemmings. Nature seems to take care of things. Makes me wonder about the human overpopulation.

    • Flapdoodle Flapdoodle

Oh, the starfish overpopulation was blamed on global warming.

    • amberlight amberlight

Starfish feeding on each other doesn't explain the dissolving occurrences, unless it can be shown that when one eats another it triggers that particular reaction. Also, hasn't this phenomenon occurred rather suddenly, indicating an abrupt disruptor?

What about lemmings? You mean that Disney-manufactured myth that they commit mass suicide by hurling themselves off a cliff into the ocean? Rodents in the wild do respond to overpopulation by mass migrations from areas where there is insufficient food, inevitably leading to many deaths due to a number of factors—just as human migrations are fraught with dangers—but deliberate self-annihilation is not a normal reaction for wild animals.

Human "overpopulation" is another eugenicist deception. The problem isn't that we are stacked front to back a la "Soylent Green" (except maybe rush hour in the NYC subway), but our lifestyle. The rate of birth in this country has declined dramatically over the last half century, but the rate of resource consumption and toxic waste has continued to rise.

      • Socrates

Pollution = population x unsustainable consumption.

A eugenicist is different that one who advises againt unlimited numbers of people on a finite planet. You can argue that eugenics and population control advocates share some beliefs, but the dictionary definitions are different.

If I use birth control, am I a eugenicist?

It is impossible to ignore the fact that some poor countries such as the Philippines will double their populations by the end of the century, for example. People would have to decrease non-sustainable energy use to stay the same. Thus, ignoring population growth ignores a huge factor in the third world.

The world must voluntarilyimit population or nature will do that in her own way and upon her own terms. Nature herself acts like a eugenicist when a population of bacteria produce endotoxins. Even with food, the colonies will die from pollution. We must work on all variables of the equation to save us all from ourselves.

Its ironic that the desire to solve the population problem will eventually make this world sterile except for black fungus that feeds on radiation and other oddities…..

"A new study on thyroid cancer in people provides support for the idea that the rising incidence of the disease is not simply a result of improvements in doctors’ ability to detect it. In other words, more people really are developing thyroid cancer than they did in the past.

"From a literal point of view, nothing, but hyperthyroidism in cats, which is almost always caused by a benign thyroid tumor, is also on the rise. In fact, it is now thought to be the most commonly diagnosed feline endocrine (hormonal) disease. I wonder if a common cause might be behind the rising incidence of thyroid disease in people and cats."

Iodine 131 coated the entire globe in horrific quantities during the first 3 days after nuclear detonation. Most smaller species are dying off quickly after short amounts of exposure to concentrated particle clusters. Larger species do not die from bio-accumulated radiation quickly unless the contamination is severe. Small organic life forms are the most threatened fastest and are a horrifying view of the future. An entire ocean that feeds the globe with oxygen will quickly turn warm as weird quantum temperatures roll across the tides killing all life.

The entire ocean now has an ecological dose level per x leaked LD in any species. Enjoy the carnival of ecological decimation.

Ene-ers, for all your enlightenment, you're remarkably slow in assimilating how dire this IS and the SURE chain of events that ARE occurring. You seem to only be a sentinel for "Radiation! Radiation!" …when you should be screaming "Gas! Gas!" The difference is, if radiation were truly our most immediate peril, you'd be right: Life would have a few more generations to play out. We could bleed out slowly as we try to fix Fukushima.

But since H2S consumes metal (and just about everything else, including starfish flesh), I predict that every water cooled nuclear power plant in the world WILL be affected, escalating this chain reaction, but it was underway BEFORE Fukushima. This "event" is not generations away. The tipping point HAS been reached.

I have read enenews practically every day, especially the comments that are made; but, I want to especially thank you for educating people about the thawing of the permafrost and under the Artic icecap that has stayed frozen for @ 10,000 years. It is of great concern to me, as well, and it is difficult to introduce the subject when people have so many other issues of concerns. I post on my facebook page and rarely have a response. At first the validity made no impression and then the priority was questioned. The information is from USGS.gov and NASA and the theories proposed by Jonny Menomic on Jumping Jack Flash that are no longer theories, but fact. Germany closed its nuclear power plants in part because they could see the danger as the levels of methane increase. In the US we allow the problems to become over whelming and then attempt solutions. The damage to the Gulf floor made by the oil companies, the damage done to the North Sea floor by the oil companies, the unexpected discovery of 8-9 fissures off our east coast all discharging methane have consequences that may connect to Fukushima and our dying planet. Thank you once again.

I suspect that a town's small staff of fire fighters and volunteers have no information regarding the gas leaking from our very planet.

Thank you. But no one is listening. They think they have time to get cancer.

    • Dr. Anne Lee Tomlinson Maziar anne

People are already dying and have died. Radiation kills the immune system and the circulatory system. Even radiation caused cancer comes much more quickly than the myths floated by the nuclear industry. And we are going to die of suffocation soon without any oxygen.

      • irhologram

Anne. You just don't get it. We can't go over 1250 parts per billion of methane/H2S to survive, and we've reached 2369 parts per billion…and it continues to rise…now exponentially fast. This isn't some future date, a year or two down the road. Of course people die from radiation. But given a fresh slate of a cancer-free person today, they will die of gas before radiation can poison them, unless they are in the immediate vicinity of a meltdown or nuclear explosion. This is so dire, Anne, that sometimes in a great irony, I think Fukushima is being used as a distraction from gas chamber death row, a sentence that can't be appealed now. Conceivably, if we woke up the world, we could shut the NPPs down. But, Anne, there's nothing we can do now to reduce higher parts per billion methane/H2S to reverse this ELE and sustain life. And I know you'd like to blame this on Fukushima, too, but the Arkansas blackbirds with the melted guts fell out of the sky 3 months before Fukushima, and the ice caps have been melting on ours and other planets well before 3/11. It isn't a pretty. There is no hope. We can store food, but even if we wear gas masks, and the zombies don't loot us or eat our faces, where will any new crops come from when everything is on fire? The only survival will be an underground biosphere, and I don't know about you, but I just can't get there from here. As far as I know, our faiths are the only answer. Blessings. Godspeed.

        • Dr. Anne Lee Tomlinson Maziar anne

Of course, we have had radiation poisoning going on for 70 years. And yes I spoke out against methane on another thread just this morning. Exploring for methane hydrates off the shore of Japan may have been a cause of the 9.0 earthquake. What I was saying is that you don't have to wait years to die from Fukushima. Many have already died. And I have said many times that radiation and other toxins act synergistically. The whole is much greater than the sum of the parts.

The bees can't stand up to both radiation and pesticides. But the bees are dying and there are many animal deaths due to radiation form all the many sources of radiation around the earth.

I'm sorry. I've already seen members of my family die from the meltdown in Santa Susana in 1959. And the cancer rates have gone up drastically from 1900 to the present even before Fukushima, but after all the radiation exposure. Radiation causes heart attacks and diabetes, etc., etc…..

I think that the majority of death in the Pacific is due to radiation. Methane nan't be an additional stress on our environment.

You can die in one minute from either radiation or methane.

          • Dr. Anne Lee Tomlinson Maziar anne

What I meant to say is that the environment can't stand the additional stress of oxygen deprivation due to methane.

But the death of the plankton in the ocean is undoubtedly due to radiation from Fukushima and other nuclear waste dumped into the ocean. And death of the plankton which creates 70% of our oxygen is a huge problem.

The widening of the ozone hole over the Arctic caused by the radiation from Fukushima and other nuclear power plants and weapons facilities and other nuclear accidents is also depleting our oxygen.

Surely we have to say no to fracking, methane hydrates, nuclear, and other technologies which are destroying the earth.

            • irhologram

Yes, Anne, fracking is right up there with NPPs as causative, because with the displacement of the North American craton, the Pacific Ring of Fire is adjusting, and the "push" is extending all the way to El Hierro and beyond.

Supervolcano remnants found in Maine: Maine has supervolcanoes. Wait, Maine has volcanoes? Yes, and their violent eruptions could have been among the biggest ever on Earth, geoscientist Sheila Seaman reported Tuesday (Oct. 29) at the Geological Society of America’s annual meeting. “Long before there were these things called supervolcanoes, we’ve known about giant, big, horrific silicic volcanic eruptions,” said Seaman, of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The most massive of these blasts in recent history was Toba, which blew up an island in Indonesia 2.5 million years ago. The explosion heaved 700 cubic miles (2,800 cubic kilometers) of magma out of the Earth’s crust. Around 420 million years ago, a series of super-eruptions dropped thick piles of ash and lava fragments along the proto-East Coast. As more ice melts away on Greenland and more water runs off into the sea, there is less weight on the Earth’s crust under Greenland. The crust and mantle can bounce back during a large melt, an effect that is called 'isostatic rebound'. This rebound can not only trigger earthquakes and landslides, it can also suck up the magma in the Earth’s crust and trigger volcanic eruptions.
The added weight of water from melting glaciers stresses the Earth’s crust underneath the sea, which can cause earthquakes. This is especially the case for coastal waters, where the impact of the water that flows into the sea is huge, not only in terms of weight, but also in terms of the currents they cause.
As the permafrost melts, mountain ranges, soil and submarine sediments all become less robust. Where the permafrost previously held things together, we can now expect more coastal collapse, avalanches and landslides, which can send shockwaves through the sea that in turn trigger earthquakes and hydrate destabilization.
Methane hydrates that are on the edge of stabilization can be disturbed by global warming in two additional ways, temperature and pressure: Warming of the Earth's crust as heat penetrates sediments on the seafloor. Thermal expansion of the Earth's crust means that the crust will expand slightly in volume, resulting in expansion of the cavity that holds the hydrates.

Cont. Finally, there are high readings along the Aleutian Islands, Alaska. The islands, with their 57 volcanoes, are in the northern part of the Pacific Ring of Fire and they have experienced a lot of seismic activity lately, including an earthquake with a magnitude of 7 on the Richter scale on August 30, 2013, and several more recent earthquakes with a higher magnitude than 6 on the Richter scale. http://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2013/09/methane-release-caused-by-earthquakes.html

Actually, it's H2s that's the major worry, but mostly where Methane is, it is. Your examples are from life "as it was."…which seems oddly idyllic compared to what it IS if you were to understand why all the trains are derailing, houses exploding, and school buses burning… There are so many whole classes and schools sickening now?..I think because of outdoor activities, You probably didn't see these stories because it isn't served up, even on most alternative media.I wish you'd take the time to open the research I've posted. But in other ways, it's just as well you not know…its better to think you can still fight the good fight. Yet some of us are just so curious about how it all works…want to know the theory of it all that explains everything. We just don't stop looking. And in the end, the quest leads right back to me: Where on the scale do I function with both love and boundaries?

Thank you irhologram, I'm reading the links now. This is all new to me (i have heard here and there but none that paints such a dire situation ), and quite a bit of learning curve /lots to digest but your posts haven't gone unnoticed.

2 comments above I feel the same way :

@michele : 'I went through shock and denial, and now accepted – and never went through the anger phase…already too angry at everything else' … that is lately my feeling about everything.

Radiation is even more a worry. There is no way to ever mediate all the radiation that is accumulating. MOX fuel uses weapons grade plutonium named for death.

              • Dr. Anne Lee Tomlinson Maziar anne

“The unnatural new element was made and bred under a cloak of absolute secrecy, as part of the wartime 'Manhatten Project.' For two years, it had no name. Ten years after the new planet Pluto had appeared in the heavens, this unnatural element appeared under the worst possible circumstances, as the world lurched into total war. As Pluto in mythology wore a helmet of invisibility, so plutonium is an element which none of us are ever likely to see. The world only heard about it when it exploded in New Mexico, turning the desert sand to glass.
                “Pluto's turning-point

“The new planet Pluto appeared in 1930 conjunct its own node. Its orbit makes a steep angle to the ecliptic so this was quite a pronounced event; therefore its appearance was enormously powerful, as if some Hades-type principle had emerged into the light of day. In 1932 artificial transmutation began, and then in 1942 atomic energy was unleashed. In politics unheard-of horrors appeared, as if underworld principles had emerged: the victors of World War II somehow acquired the assumption that it was OK to target missiles on the cities of other nations. For the dreadful new weapons, Pluto's element was the trigger. Tension heightened until, in the 1980s, a majority of Britons were expecting the thermonuclear conflagration – remember? The necro-technocrats seemed to be in control.

Billions will die from Fukushima, and lands will become uninhabitable for millions of years, and sterility is dramatically on the rise, and the human genome has been damaged forever.

Please shut down all nuclear power plants. Please stop bankrupting the world's economy and destroying all our natural resources forever.

Anne common sense will not happen. There is no understanding left. The fools worry about their Gold as the Planet burns. We will eventually have Methane as our atmosphere.Oxygen will disappear.

Until you said that Fukushima is being used to distract people from methane… That's nonsense.

          • irhologram

No, I didn't say that was true, Mairs. I said that relatively speaking, this ecological disaster is as huge, or greater than Fukishima.
…and frankly, I see folks here distracted by every changing color on a webcam, when people in their own home towns are being affected, while they are oblivious to connecting the dots to Fukushima as a Contributor to An EVEN GREATER catastrophe. Don't pick fights. Don't put words in my mouth.

        • We Not They Finally

irholgram…Yes the truth is hard to swallow.Thankyou for a very clear understanding. Its more than faith its our own gateways that allow knowledge to spring forth. Its the awareness the consciousness and insight along with understanding that will help us make the jump we must in the end make.Death by itself is a part of an ecological process.Death of humanity is something else.It takes me to the question not only of faith but what is this really all about? Why Now? And its inclusive of not just humanity but all living things…Good luck and lets look at the really big questions and face them with the intelligence heart and soul that we have.

wow, irhologram, you do know how to cheer a soul up!! lots of reading there, i'm getting stuck into it now, thank you.

  • twinflames

Irhologram ..I am listening. I understand the methane/H2S connection to mass animal die offs, explosions, vehicle fires etc and to past extinction events. The evidence is there for anyone who cares/dares to explore the hypothesis. It really ties so many mysterious and frightening events together with scientific validity that is easily verified..scariest thing ever

  • twinflames

Side note..shortly before I discovered the jumping jack flash site my sisters garage and house nearly burned down after the car engine caught fire. Her vehicle was off and parked in the garage.

    • irhologram

And so, Twinflames, you have first-hand knowledge. I do, too, but after his multimillion dollar house burned down from a trash can fire, he blamed it on having swept up cigarette butts from a party the night before, and the fire department, of course, went right along with that really IMPROBABLE explanation. Does your sister understand?

    >> Ever since atomic testing, global temperatures have increased greater than prior to atomic testing.

    >> Ever since Fukushima, higher sea-surface temperatures anomalies have been noted:

    (a) In April 2011, Gulf of Mexico sea-surface temperatures measured 1°C above average

    (b) "Over land and ocean combined, 2012 was between 0.14° and 0.17° Celsius above the 1981–2010 average"

    (c) "Hot" regions in ocean where Fukushima radiation-plume went:

"A particularly hot region dominated an area east of Shanghai in the Pacific bordering China, Japan and the Korean Peninsula. The hot surface water extended under the powerful influence of an anomalous heat dome that brought dangerous 100-110+ degree (F) temperatures to these countries throughout much of August. This hot zone stretched eastward across the Pacific and on toward the US west Coast — a vast swath of water measuring 2-4 C hotter than the 1981 to 2010 average for much of the month."

Note: "ANOMALOUS HEAT DOME" (such as radiation??)

  • ftlt

It's not just radiation, gang… Stop fixating… We have created a bigger toxic soup than just that that in our soils, air and waters…

The list of toxins is endless…

    Mother Nature is pissed off

  • We Not They Finally

If intelligence in a species depends on the ability to stay alive than the human species has attained a ZERO.If Greed and ignorance are factors that point to inability to survive than that leads to other species malignant and deadly will be way ahead of our Survival.Thats why Black fungus and other Immortal cancers will long survive our necrotic planet.First if we attain a planet with methane as an atmosphere which i think we will only creatures that breath methane will be left. The Ocean is the main provider of our planets oxygen.

  • We Not They Finally

Lets look at basic principles that are necessary for survival of this planet…The integrity of DNA.DNA will be mutated by radioactive substances that nuclear bombs and plants and disasters unleash on our ecology. In the case of ELES that can and will destroy all life from this planet.Oxygen will disappear as Planckton dissapears and the ocean dies.Homeostasis is the other main principle that allows the balance that lets all life survive. On the cellular level but is a principle that is behind how all living cells operate..Again radiation interferes with that If you eliminate the principle by which the whole foundation of world ecology operates you lose everything.A barren planet without an oxygen atmosphere .We return to methane as an atmosphere as it was millions of yrs ago when the planet was in its infancy.
