Would it not be better and easier if they tried to collect debris while still at sea, instead of waiting until it comes a shore and pollutes the environment.
Their is lots of unemployed fishermen on west coast that could intercept this debris and collect much like they do with logs or oil?
Why wait they know it is coming you would think disaster relief would kick in, what are they waiting for, I would be surprised if this debris is radioactive it has been emerged in water for 1.5 years and even if it was why wait till it comes ashore then it will be very expensive to dispose.

    • It's the ignore that it is there, until it hits you in the face, attitude.

I agree that scooping prior to landing on rocky beaches or before mixing with sand makes sense tons of sense. But, that would cost money. If you just let it float around until it lands, then the person whose yard it lands in gets the cost to remove it.

Then, I thought, well… tsunamis have occurred in the past why is this particular debris so 'polluted' now?

I would say it's because the lifestyles of the Japanese have changed since the last big tsunami. They build with materials other than rice, wood and paper like they used to. They now use household products like Clorox or whatever. The plastic 'bits' are also from all of the modern products now used worldwide.

So again, the toxic debris is NOT the tsunami's fault. It's because of the MAN-MADE non-biodegradable materials that have been added to the mix.

"100% of the birds biopsied have plastic in them." – researcher

–> ;) Not one mention of RADIATION awareness.
This topic is completely ignored in order to protect and coverup the Nuclear Industry's many shortcomings.

Some people believe that when info such as the radiation level is not discussed in a news report it's a non issue…the radiation level of the debrie must be normal there was no mention of the subject. Surely if it were an issue it would be covered in the report. That is the way we are trained to think….it works.

Does anyone else see the glaring similarity between the US nightly national news and entertainment news?
Diane Sawyer fits right in to the switch…now someone like Walter Cronkite would have seemed silly discussing the latest pitfalls of Ms. Lindsy Lohan.

By now there is so much pollution of the oceans going on that there is no way to clean it anymore.

I'm looking for those billions of tiny little floating uranyl peroxide bubbles from Fukushima and I don't see any. Good thing, because they're repeatedly stripped off the waves into mist and can end up a thousand miles inland. Really bad things could happen if you breathe even one, since they each have 60 uranium atoms.

Nope, just plastic junk like a laundry basket and a pail. No tiny Fuku cancer-balls floating around. Thanks, Brian!

Sure does. Lets just go over to the Coast Guard site and see what the radiation levels were on that boat…

Hmmm… can't find anything. They *had* to have measured radiation on the boat. No reason for it to be secret.

Ohhh [forhead slap] that's *right*. American citizens are not suppose to know radiation levels of anything because we'll panic and riot and stop buying lottery tickets. Thank you, big brother fed for protecting us with censorship. You're my HERO!

lol hehehe yep, we are stupid consumers! It reminds me of some other time..

I do not believe you were here in the beginning..Pavewayiii, such a sad time, we watched video- youtube, of a Frenchman living in Tokyo. He was so scared, and outraged..he showed us the television, and the ridiculous gameshow goofy stuff they were playing, screaming at us to demand answers. He said, that we must help him, and that we too shall find ourselves with no official information, no idea what to do, and television will play mindless crap instead of informing the people about the nuclear meltdowns, and how to protect themselves and their families.

      He touched my soul.

He made a few videos..I always wonder if he got out.. I hope so.

I remember we learned about the number of nuclear reactors from him, we had yet to fully understand..

Think about all that happening back then, but not being able to see the guy's video at all because it was censored? The harder the government hammers down on information, the easier it is for the average person to ignore tin-foil hat types freaking out about radiation.

When this happens in the U.S., the FIRST thing the government will do is start 'managing' content on the internet via the ISPs and search engines. They did a marvelous job blacking out Ft. Calhoun because everyone already evacuated and main-stream media rolls over on command. But the government will absolutely panic if this happens to a larger population who already know they will be lied to.

There will be no ENENews or any other alternative media. There will be no scared and outraged French guy in a big American city warning the world on U-Tube. There will not be a TEPCO-cam or Nuckelchen. They don't have to take out the entire internet to do that either. All they have to do is make people aware that they ARE monitoring the U.S. internet traffic and you will be held accountable for visiting any site critical of the U.S. government. We'll all be watching goofy gameshow stuff here too. And the big news channels will do just what they did in Japan.

Well since the time difference fro the Tsunami and the release of Radiation from Fukushima is something like a week?? I would not think any of this stuff is likely to be Radioactive.. as it would have all been swept out to sea.. probably several kms before Reactors blew up, so no more Radioactive than anywhere in LA after the Fallout.

Dont panic.. probably loads of goodies in there..

    Finders keepers… Losers weepers.

    • Fallout. What about the rains that fall on the debris?

The under currents may also be radioactively contaminated. Under currents move at different speeds.

This contamination map shows radiation in the water coming up on Hawaii. Right now.

Is the Radiation enough to make them sick on the spot?
      or…
Will it possibly make them sick years from now and they'll never know the difference? That's what the Nuclear Industry is banking on.

The only way to know is to USE A GEIGER COUNTER!

      fuk u shima,

Plutonium and Uranium buckeyballs created by the combination of sodium, extreme heat and radiation, never before seen.. yada yada..

Radiation fall out is just that..it falls down.. it does not disburse evenly there will be hotspots in debris just like everywhere else now..

Also, traveling with other decaying material, hot spots, breeds more contamination, or perhaps spreads, would be a better word..

What wasn't radioactive, is all of a sudden pushed next to something that is.. and presto.. now it too is radioactive.

:) delicious stuff don't cha know???

Oh, wait, you can't taste it, so, how about delightful stuff..No way to clean it up.

Perpetrated on us by the Corporation, the Board of Directors, and our elected.

Do not let any children touch this stuff.. there should be hazmat on sight to ensure, via proper testing, no radiation danger.

..I personally, still, would not let my child touch any of it. As a matter of fact, I have already written off the entire west coast as a destination place. I may go as far as Seattle, but I will never again go to the coast, or go beach combing, not even in the Sound.

"Goodies" that might cause your next child, or grandchild, to have 3 legs and one eye..don't occur to be worth finding.

So, it is the State's problem to clean up, but the feds get $5mil?? Hmm, wonder how they will dole that out?

"Japan’s Foreign Ministry announced their decision to offer a $5 million donation to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Friday. Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda informed Secretary of State Hillary Clinton of the plan during a meeting in September on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum. The US government plans to use the money for disposal, detection and the monitoring of debris.
Large volumes of debris have washed ashore along the US west coast and the Pacific Islands. In June, a floating pier from Japan’s Aomori Prefecture arrived ashore in Oregon. US state authorities are mainly responsible for removing the waste."

How about we use that 5 million dollar "donation" to ship all the debris back to Japan??

Not only Japan's debris, Hawaii also has to contend with this:

"ARMY SEEKS TO SKIRT DEPLETED URANIUM RULES"

"The U.S. Army maintains that it does not need a license from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to possess depleted uranium at its training ranges in Hawaii."

"While Army officials have repeatedly downplayed the public health threat, opponents of the military have warned of the possibility of it being pulverized by a high explosive impact during a training exercise, then carried downwind into populated areas."
