NBC Nightly News: Urgent situation after frightening discovery at Fukushima — Planned ice wall shows Tepco is grasping at straws and can’t stop plant leaking like a sieve — Now almost 900 straight days of contamination flowing in Pacific (VIDEO)

Title: Fukushima power plant begins pumping contaminated water
Source: NBC Nightly News
Date: August 9, 2013

Lester Holt, NBC News anchor: We’re back tonight with the urgent situation developing in Japan. A frightening new discovery at the Fukushima nuclear plant two and a half years after the disaster there. We learned this week that the plant continues to leak radioactive water and it’s going right into the sea. […]

Ann Thompson, chief environmental affairs correspondent: Today the owners of the crippled fukushima nuclear power plant started pumping contaminated water into temporary storage tanks, a desperate act that in the minds of many is a monument to mismanagement.

Dr. Edwin Lyman, Union of Concerned Scientists: It’s leaking like a sieve and groundwater is flushing radioactive contaminants into the groundwater.

Thompson: […] Each day, for 882 days, nearly 72,000 gallons of polluted water has flowed into the Pacific Ocean. […] [Tepco] is considering freezing the ground around the plant. Essentially building a mile-long ice wall underground, something that’s never been tried before to keep the water out. One scientist I spoke to dismissed this idea as grasping at straws, just more evidence that the power company failed to anticipate this problem, Lester, and now cannot solve it.

Holt: Disturbing is an understatement.

Hello??? Does anyone really care????… I mean, who is not on ENENEWS

This is going on everyday all around the world in the name of "Freedom"..

Millions are dying while our heros are the global destroyers… To listen to the radio and you think, Steve Jobs was the 2nd coming… One of the tips of a cult of lies and harmful world wrecking hubris…

We need more police is the answer at home… More drones, troops, missiles, warplanes, warships to terrorize and destroy if needed every village overseas is their answer..

Welcome to the Free Trade Neoliberal Global Party..

It will kill you and the things you love

    • ToBeExpected ToBeExpected

Nope… and the reason for that is that no one knows what is really going on – our leaders are not telling us, Oh! yes, there are trickles here, trickles there of news about the resulting fall out, from FUKUSHIMA into the air and sea but they are few and far between.

It's the 'well, if it's not in my back yard' syndrome too, sadly.

I also think, that the problem is just too big and too beyond repair, to do anything about, anyhow.

The old Biblical adage applies here to most also, .. Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die….

  • Holygeezer

Hey NBC, CBS, ABC and all the rest of you "presstitutes." Where were all of you for the last two and a half years. There has been an emergency situation at Fukushima since day one. And now you manage to get all alarmed about it. Not that you shouldn't get alarmed, but you all failed completely on covering this story all those years. Thanks for helping to cover up the story. NOT. Epic fail. Of course some of us followed it all along and were laughed at by most everyone else. It's no laughing matter as this rages out of control for decades or more to come. Back to the celebrity breast jobs now.

Yes, more police and that "is" the solution and they should be able to retire with full benefits at age 45 too!

"There will be no significant impact to the United States."

President Obama said that same thing on March 17, 2011.

    • nedlifromvermont

I guess that would make President Obama a liar and a thug … and he looks so happy and clever and all … so Harvard-pure … but maybe he didn't take Latin in Honolulu, which would have allowed him to translate the little word in the Harvard logo, "veritas" which happens to mean "truth" … but that's okay, because Harvard has done precious little with regard to truth about nuclear power since the Trinity test … because maybe they didn't want to get called out as wimpy, liberal arts-type-fools, by their very macho engineer-type neighbors down Mass Ave, at MIT, where "probabalistic" studies showed clearly, to any brain-washed scientist. that what has happened just simply couldn't happen …

In all fairness, there were critics at Harvard who questioned doing probability studies on events which had not yet occurred, which is kind of like a divinity school exercise in faith …

Trouble is, they were and are playing with all of our DNA, which should not have been allowed, but in the Land of the Brave, big JPMorgan and GE money doesn't need to wait for further studies; they just buy the congressional prostitute whores' souls, wholesale …

Nobody from GE stepping up to the plate to say, "I'm sorry for all this …"

Apologies have no currency in a world empire, hell bent on self-destruction …

Almost enough material for a social studies Freshman seminar, here, don't ya' think????

Here we go, Harvard, here we go!!!

      peace …

No, President Obama is committing treason, as is the mainstream media. Anyone who deceives and/or misleads the American public so they cannot find out the truth about how radioactivity is harming their families is committing treason and they should think of the consequences before there are consequences. Rest assured, there will be consequences.

" Why did Former Secretary Clinton tell Japan the USA would NOT test fish imports for radiation? WHY?" Oh, that's an easy one! Sure it is and haven't you seen them ramp up "more of everything" for our security police state since 9-11 all over the country.

There is now an open checkbook for all things called "National Security".

It must be the answer, since your government is promoting it (the ramp up) now everywhere and you, I and other citizens must be really very scared.

Look around, have you seen any terrorists lately?

Better look across the street, since that terrorist is now your neighbor out there mowing his lawn.

Better call it in, since your neighbor actually read the constitution, and he surely will be trouble in the future..

I’d like to “second” everyone’s anger and cynicism. No, third and fourth and fifth it. HOWEVER, it is also FINALLY breaking through on a MSM network. And whereas most crises get their “fifteen minutes of fame” (even the Gulf, which is STILL catastrophic, but no one reports it), this may have “legs” for a long time if people think that THEY are being poisoned or their CHILDREN are being poisoned.
I have no more trust and confidence than anyone else, but this will be interesting to watch.

    @ building a mile-long ice wall underground,

  • Cisco Cisco

There seemed to me (reviewing/reading FOIA telephone transcripts), to be considerable discussion about SFP #4 by US NRC commissioners that SPF #4 fuel did breach its pool. If that's the case, a building collapse may not be a significant as it is being portrayed.

    What's the story here?

    • Kassandra

Cisco did you see Majia's blog before and after images of spent fuel pool #4?

Unit 4 spent fuel pool probably burned multiple times. It likely burned over the summer of 2011 and I'm absolutely confident it burned in Nov-2011 through early 2012 when the Radnet readings in US cities under the jet stream were over 1000 cpm beta.

We webcam watchers witnessed fires on the webcams during both of these periods.

I've researched how they might have put the fires out and I suspect a special foam was used. The imagery suggests that hypothesis and I found research articles about development of foam for nuclear disasters.

Some of what PattieB says sounds crazy to me, but i think her assessment of Daiichi is probably much closer to truth than Tepco's revelations.

I'm not sure whether the common spent fuel pool has burnedm but I can tell you with certainty that it has produced huge steam emissions.

The steam coming from the units and from the ground is becoming darker and oilier looking. I suspect the nuclear fires and criticalities under ground. Spiking radiation detections support this interpretation.

Tepco may have little time left to operate at the plant. Japan's government (fascist Abe) is freaking out. You were right about the inevitability of abandonment.

This is one big experiment. Modeling risks and timelines is no doubt impossible.

Of course, risks could be mitigated…

      • Cisco Cisco

Thanks Kass…that's about what I took away from the the NRC transcripts shortly after the initial melts.

Beyond that 3 week window, it was/is unclear to me as to the real conditions on the ground regarding SFP #4.

Then, where is the fuel now; and is it fuel or corium?

        • Kassandra

Hard to know the exact conditions of any of the spent fuel pools.

Hard to know how much fuel actually burned in the pools.

Gundersen said that the fuel could vaporize even in the absence of open flames.

Lots of fuel vaporized and incinerated in the pools, but exact amounts will never be disclosed.

From what I've gathered, the majority of fuel from reactors 1 and 3 is in the earth.

It appears from recent news that reactor 2 may still have enough fuel in it to go 'boom' again.

I have no idea of the conditions of units 5 and 6.

Still the worst case scenario of cascading nuclear plant fires appears to have been avoided so far, preventing immediate mass fatalities.

That worst case scenario still lurks and I wonder whether escalating risks triggered the recent media flurry.

          • We Not They Finally

Actually, Kassandra, we wonder whether that recent EARTHQUAKE (eight days back) triggered all this with a 50-fold radiation spike. No one talks about it. I find that strange.

      • We Not They Finally

Kassandra, thank you SO MUCH for hard info, not just rants. People have to get steam off, that’s true, but we need the hard info more than ever.

There are no words for this sort of dishonesty. Well, there are words, but I said them here two years ago and what's the goddamned point now. Not to be a pessimist, but this just demonstrates how clueless the average American (at least) is, that this MSM jackass can actually act like this is NEWS.

Question is, why are they reporting on it now? What is the other hand doing that we should be aware of?

      • We Not They Finally

“Aware of”? Are kidding? Like NO ONE mentions that EARTHQUAKE just eight days back!! You know, the one with “no immediate reports of damage”? And OF COURSE they say the seismological reading was lower than it really was! They said “a strong 6” – so that could be 6.9 right there. But what if it was 7.5 or higher? Dutchsinse discovered long back that they monkey with the original readings commonly.

From the beginning, NEW EARTHQUAKE was considered a leading danger! Now all hell breaks loose all at once, with that being the ONLY external factor we can trace, and NO ONE EVEN MENTIONS IT?? I mean even here on this website.

  • razzz razzz

That report sure dances around where the radioactive water is actually coming from or why it is radioactive in the first place. So does Dr. Ken Buesseler of Woods Hole avoids mentioning the source of the radioactivity.

With the dumb down public, they will never think to ask.

Wonder what makes the Daiichi runoff radioactive, could it be uranium, plutonium, cesium(s), tritium…?

GE & Westinghouse built these damn things & they dot the earth. They have been putting out radiation for decades & as cancer rates went up the Propaganda Machine was set in motion to work its bullshit on the dumbed down people on just how cheap & safe it was & it was in no way related to birth defects & all the other up tick of illnesses that has over come the world. No one died from eating a peanut in the 1800's, but with GMO's & nuclear waste coving all parts of the earth all that changed as big corporations took control over by way of the FDA early 1900's.

GE & Westinghouse has the assets to be used if they were took to a court that was not already bought by them & then if those assets were put in the hands of folks with no ties with the UN or any other government we might do some good, but as many have said it's to damn late & we wont be here in a millions years to see the results!

Is this "Wormwood" that is happening.
Wormwood is named, Artemisia absinthium,is a known Biblical metaphor for things that are unpalatably bitter. One interesting theory is that nuclear weaponry could be called wormwood.
"The third angel blew his trumpet, and a great star fell from heaven, blazing like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters became wormwood, and many died from the water, because it was made bitter." (Revelation 8:10–11,

A star is our Sun and what man has unnaturally created with Nuclear Energy Power Plants are considered Mini-Suns, thus they are Mini-Stars!

Nuclear Energy Power Plants can be considered Sitting Stars.. that never went anywhere.

All sitting Nuclear Power Plants and the radiation contamination that they all leak/release thus are considered/called "Wormwood"

This is totally BS. The IAEA left Japan some months after the disaster, because the filtration system that they had imported from France to cleanse the radioactive water failed after hours of its first operation. The reason was that the radiation levels were too high. The water had to go somewhere, and, of course, it would go into the sea. Now they are saying that this is new "News." Duh! Everytime I go to eat fish at a restaurant, I ask where it is from, and they look at me like I have five legs. Pretty soon we all will! Assholes!

considering the 753 tons of buried fuel rods, melting together in a low-frade fission reaction…

  • Mark W

The fires seen in the video were not fires that you can put out with water or foam. The cameras were seeing what man cannot see. It was the result of radiation coming from the cores that had already burned deep below the reactors. They have no idea of how much contaminated water is flowing into the ocean. They only know what the difference in how much they pump and how much they get back. Some of it goes up in steam while other goes into the ocean. Ground water also contaminated flow into the ocean as well. As my wife says, " They have already killed us all and most of us just don't know it yet."
