Title: Tremors return by sinkhole

The sharp earth tremors that rattled the Bayou Corne community during the summer and presaged the emergence last month of a large sinkhole in Assumption Parish have returned, a University of Memphis scientist said.

The tremors appeared to build in July, reached a crescendo of several hundred per day then stopped at 2 p.m. Aug. 2, hours before the sinkhole was found early Aug. 3 on the property of Texas Brine Co. of Houston, officials said.

[...]

Steve Horton, research scientist with the University of Memphis Center for Earthquake Research and Information, said Friday that about a week ago, one or two sharp tremors began reoccurring every day or so.

[...]

John Boudreaux, director of the Assumption Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, said some of the returning tremors are being felt.

He said a state trooper was awakened by a tremor about 2:30 a.m. Friday.

[...]

What might be most vexing about the return of these sharp tremors is that they come in addition to long-period, lower frequency tremors that began Aug. 6.

[...]

the long-period tremors [...] last for three to four minutes.

Horton said he has never seen such a combination of tremors before from the same area at the same time.

[...]

More from Horton, who is also working with the State of Louisiana and the USGS to study the sinkhole situation

  • “Yes, it does lead to a lot of questions and that’s really where we are”
  • “We have a lot of questions as to what’s going on and not a lot answers”
  • “There is something going on with these very long-period signals, and we don’t know what it is … I haven’t figured it out yet”
  • Horton said there is no cause for concern from the tremors

Duh, if one uses an uncontrolled seismic process for winning gas, what do you expect to get? Bananas…?

Hydrolic fracturing is a bad enough idea on its own already, but since they can't control it, they do not know what and where those mini-fault lines will open up something which should have best stayed buried.

Corporate greed will be the downfall of the country that supports it the most. And that might be even taken quite literally… it won't be the first cave they'll collapse, and it won't be the last either.

Also, I just read on EX-SKF that Hollande (France's new president) had decided they will decomission Fessenheim nuclear reactor (a small step, but it might be the first spark of hope towards France weening itself from fission-gained electricity) and that it WILL NOT ALLOW SHALE-GAS EXTRACTION on its territory.
That is a very wise decision, as one does not want to create a source of earthquakes in a country riddled with nuclear power plants.

I agree to both of your comments and thanks for the France update. Any and all steps are necessary. There will not be a massive willing exodus away from nuclear no matter the circumstances…it will be one reactor at a time. It was only nature that forced the multiple shut downs in Japan. It is now up to the will of the people to keep them closed.

nyarlathorep, I agree with you. The concept of fracking (and fracturing the earth's crust in unpredictable ways) just doesn't give me the warm fuzzies. Have lived most of my life in California. Lived through the Loma Prieta earthquake (in San Francisco), and lived in Humboldt County, near the Mendocino Triple Junction for many years. Seems to be doing anything to destablize the structure of rocks and soil is a bad idea. Greed knows no bounds.

Horton has opened a can of worms. First he says they dont know what is going on…then he says "there is no cause for concern from the tremors". Since they dont have a clue –why tell people not to be concerned. Frankly, if anything occurs and people or property are injured/damaged when the "tremors" lead to other issues..Horton is going to take the blame. Does he have liablity insurance? Hope so.

For people who feel the tremors, shaking homes, etc-they should seriously look at taking critical items and storing them out of the area. I would-things like my house/personal records, tax records, list of house/business inventories — registrations for home/cars-passports..anything needed to PROVE property loss or value. Look at what BP wanted from victims after their big "whoops.". Frankly people should have copies of all critical documents anyway..no matter where they live. Hope Texas Brine also has good incident insurance too!

The people of Bayou Corne have heard this before and were ignored even when the state DNR had been aware of the crisis for at least a year. They have indicated that natural gas has been found in the Mississippi aquifers that supply water for some 70,000 people. If they believe that the non-natural nuclear waste is 15x the safety limit, they have a much larger concern. Someone should warn India for its ongoing rush to provide the nation with cheap energy by building nuclear power plants that are based on the GE/Westinghouse model.

What would be just lovely is a reporter doing a piece on the company not knowing what is going on – why don't they know? This is what they do – know these things, right? The public let this practice go on because it got them what they wanted, but, they did believe The Company knew what they were doing. To turn around and admit now that no one there knows what is happening should be enough to open several civil and criminal investigations into everyone down to the original geologists.

      Dear VicFromOregon,
Thank you for your inspiring posts! 'It was only nature that forced the multiple shut downs in Japan. It is now up to the will of the people to keep them closed.' and 'The public let this practice go on because it got them what they wanted, but, they did believe The Company knew what they were doing.'
The revealing of the difficult truths we are now experiencing is tough to take and even more challenging to assimilate. Thank you for your astuteness and objectivity :)
I agree with your points of view! I believe the public has a right to disclosure and in today's world of legalese, we are easily confused.
As folks learn more here with ENENews, questions will be raised and change will happen! :)
