Wow, Mother Nature has had enough of our species BS. It is obvious that the sinkhole is going to continue to chomp down trees and whatever is on top of the salt dome area, rather sinking into it. I don't know how you even begin to stop this from happening except for addressing nuclear plants and storage areas at risk. I do hope they are making plans and not playing the waiting game. JMHO

I wish they would show a relatively stationary video of the surface. Can't the Louisiana DNR afford a simple web-cam?

The shakey chopper-cam shows the crude, but there's more going on in the sinkhole. There's contrasting areas where it looks like the water is roiling and foaming right around the edge of the main vent.

This has been a larger public safety concern for weeks. Why does a corporation – Bayer/Texas Brine – and the LA DNR treat it like their own little private disaster? Message for these psychopathic bastards: people HATE TEPCO and BP because they hide information from their victims or outright LIE. Why are you managing the Napoleonville Geyser of Poison just like TEPCO and BP? Tell the people something useful for a change.

There are kids you didn't evacuate that are breathing clouds of that crude stink all day long. Nobody cares about your VOC boxes 'averaging' your responsibility away. You'll all be long gone by the time they're sawing tumors off those kids livers.

EPA limits for VOCs are a joke. If a mother can smell the stinky crude fumes, then the levels are too high for her kids to be breathing.

Your 'Mengele by proxy' attitude about this is horrifying. Are your lawyers behind this?

But, Paveway, if they showed us a steady close-up view of the sinkhole, we might realize the problem is even worse than we thought. Besides, the helicopter shots are clearer than those murky low-resolution webcams monitoring Fukushima Daiichi. What we need is some honesty on the part of government and industry. (I hope you're not holding your breath…)

At least publish daily plume maps so the people can make their own choices about voluntarily evacuating or taking some kind of other protective measures.

Of course people might get worried – they should be. They're being poisoned.

Good God, I hope you're not spraying Corexit on everything there to hide the problem. There's little *floating* crude compared to what looks to be cloudy, emulsified crude in these flyovers. If you're letting Clean Harbors use Corexit, you should be banned from public office for life.

    is this relevant here?????

USA cuts the budget for The Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO)

Occupy the NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) WTF??? WHY ARE WE CUTTING THE DNDO BUDGET BY 40%??? Shouldn’t we be INCREASING the detection of radiation in our country b/c there’s an ongoing nuclear disaster in Japan and the prevailing winds are in OUR direction?? It rains down in OUR crops, contaminates OUR food supply, and gets in OUR air and water!! Would someone please explain that to the people in charge!!! Never mind the fact that many of our own 104 aging nuclear power plants also leak and when they do the leaking is invisible. Shouldn’t we be spending MORE on monitoring all of this instead of cutting the budget by 40%?? In the middle of an ongoing nuclear disaster it seems really stupid to be slashing the radiation monitoring budget

"…The Budget continues the transfer of elements of DNDO portfolio to DHS S&T/HSARPA…"

The DNDO was basically worthless. They gutted it to feed Homeland Stasi. Never mind that this puts that function in an even *more* worthless organization.

DHS was put in place to protect the state, not the citizens. Citizens are potential terrorists and need to be monitored, controlled and body-cavity searched to keep them in line.

The DHS does try to keep radioactive bomb-making materials out of the U.S., but imported radioactive tuna or anything spewing out of a U.S. nuclear plant is not their concern. Except if you complain about either one. That would put you on Homeland Stasi's 'suspect' list. You are not to question the consequences of the state's actions.

The DHS isn't going to do anything about the clunky, 1950's era, volunteer-operated U.S. radiation monitoring network. It suits the needs of DHS, the NRC, FDA and EPA just fine. They'll let worthless, resource-draining citizens know if radiation levels get too high. Otherwise, they would prefer if you just didn't bother them.

@PavewayIII – thanks for putting it so succinctly.

"DHS was put in place to protect the state, not the citizens. Citizens are potential terrorists and need to be monitored, controlled and body-cavity searched to keep them in line."

The USA has become the former USSR and is heading toward Mussolini Italy.

Arc, please get on message…more monitors means more truth and more clarity, and more protection for the people at the expense of industry…are you not following politics?

It was in this summer – there was some small headline about a ditch that was bubbling, and people wondered what it could be..
It was almost presented as a mystery – and now we see what has come out of it.. well it isn't the first time these things happens, I guess, so the geologists should have had some idea already this summer..
Salt dome – sounds almost like a dish. 'Please have another saltdome..' 'Do you want some oil on it?'
