U.S. offers unmanned chopper to help remove Fukushima spent fuel
TOKYO, April 17, Kyodo
The U.S. government has told Japan that it can use a U.S. unmanned cargo transport helicopter to set up cranes to remove spent fuel rods from storage pools at the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant, Japanese and U.S. sources close to the matter said Saturday.
The K-MAX helicopter, developed jointly by Lockheed Martin Corp. and KAMAN Aerospace Group of the United States, is being considered to set up the huge cranes.

A long and difficult job without radiation !
Good thing the Twin Towers remains were not contaminated, it may have never got cleaned up with all the EPA rules and OHSA !
But it only took how many years to clean up ?

State of spent fuel rods in storage pool remains mystery.
No. 4 reactor was under regular inspection–all the fuel rods in the reactor had been moved to the storage pool. The pool contained about 1,300 partially and completely spent fuel rods, which were releasing a larger amount of heat than fuel rods stored in pools at five other reactors at the plant.

I have worked around cranes that lift large heave steel I beams and other material.
The cranes themselves are massive and very heavy and require complex hydraulics, precise components and an firm and accurate foundation. (Let’s not forget the petrol engines and elec. motors and cables involved)
Now I can see “The Light”…
a “helicopter” (remote controlled at that) will set up such a complex system of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical driven beast of a machine in order to move “how many ton’s of fuel rods… where. 50 feet next door?
Oh I forgot… are you the one who will operate the crane once it is operational? Or will the “helicopter” perform that task?
Sounds like sheep pabulum.

There needs to be the man power on the ground there that cleared the Towers, will they get that with the radiation levels, I don’t think so, Japan is not as Russia was at Chernobyl !

I have set ski lift towers on remote mountain tops by choppers. With a ground crew and perfect conditions it is still a very tough task at best. Not gonna happen by remote in a waste land such as that. Plus the fact it needs to be inspected and repaired fueled so on. They would need a Squadron of 20 to do the job in a few years. Remote controlled bulldozers and concrete trucks full of BORON. Where is the boron and why is it not sprayed on the site???? Wake up folks this is a planned radiation deployment.
