NHK, Jan. 31, 2014: TEPCO to look for more leaks at Fukushima reactor — The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant is slowly finding out more about the damage at one of the reactor containment vessels. The destruction was caused by 2011 accident. [...] The engineers are investigating leaks in a number of places in the containment vessel that houses the core at the No.1 reactor [and] estimate that up to 3.3 tons of water per hour is leaking from the 2 leaks. The operator is pouring 4.5 tons of cooling water an hour into the reactor. This means more than one ton of water may be leaking from unknown holes or cracks, as the water does not stay in the containment vessel.

NHK Newsline, Jan. 31, 2014: [Tepco is] discovering more damage at the reactor containment vessel. It says it’s going to take steps to avoid further contamination in  the area […] The engineers have also learned that more than one ton of water [per hour] is leaking form elsewhere. They plan to send in a robot again to search for other possible problems. They say they will expand their search to include the suppression chamber linked to the containment vessel. […]

Some of the fuelrods in the reactor cores are still not fully melted down into a corium blob.. and these remaining rods must be kept underwater to prevent further rad-fires that spew nasty rad-steam into the atmosphere..

Aside from building a much bigger massive secondary breakwater sealed impoundment seawall, we must also finish unloading the spent fuel pools, and the reactors themselves need to have a outer pool-wall built that can contain a water level above the remaining cores.

The whole project boils down to "water management on a massive scale".. it's like trench warfare in WW1, fall back and re-trench. There are many engineering strategies and methods that have not been implemented yet. Alaska has much more than 300million tons of graphene available, and graphene can be much more effective than zeolite for fully filtering/recycling/reconcentrating radwaste for proper disposal. Most folks are unaware that our technology is very good at mining uranium from seawater, nearly 15% of Japan's nuke inventory was originally extracted from seawater.

    1 ton of water = ~240 gallons

as per the article 4.5 tons per hour = 1080 gallons per hour

so 25,920 gallons per day from just this one reactor.

Roy Lichtenstein might wonder "M-mabye it became leaky and they couldn't find the corium !"

Yes, many of the cracks were caused by the 2011 earthquake, but what they are NOT talking about is how the buildings are shifting, sinking and deteriorating EVERY SINGLE DAY. At some point the whole erector set is going to crumble even without the help of another major quake.

"Whoopsies. There's a crack that wasn't there yesterday. We must have overlooked it…"

Unfortunately the Japanese are probably not very familiar with Humpty Dumpty. Otherwise, long ago they would have realized they were dealing with Mr. Dumpty after his fall and that in this incarnation he was also radioactive.
TEPCO would have had the lines "all the kings horses and all the kings men could not put Humpty Dumpty together again". Then we can suppose they would have asked for help from the International Community!

Alas, the more details, the more information, the less likely it seems to me that anything good can be done at this time. Those that know the details have not the science; and those that have the science and engineering lack the details.

Hopefully there is a Japanese fairy tale that will help solve the riddle posed by Fukushima Daiichi–the spirit of which may have Shinto roots.

    • We Not They Finally

They were incapable [which understand, is no "excuse"] of asking for international help. The whole idea of "saving face" is to make ONESELF look good, whoever else you hurt or even kill.

I cannot imagine that all Japanese are like this by far. But the national ethic is one of hubris. Well, if they want to kill off their own by that sword, so be it. But to poison and kill off the rest of us?

The most infuriating thing is that no international body has barged in to take the place over, help "requested" or not.

Weekly Asahi: 70% of children tested in Kanto (a region that includes Tokyo) have radioactive cesium in their urine -Journalist #Fukushima

just one of the past posts.. stuff is happening so fast on day to day basis I forget some of the past… scrolling back its just unfn believable what all I have read…we should all take a couple of hours and refer back to the past.. they have told us so much if its just half truths then the unthinkable, unimaginable, has actually happened…

Includes tokyo that means there are more than likely millions upon millions of kids loaded in japan as a whole…no where to go as no country wants the burden of 200 million sick…think of all the kids that are doomed just doomed…just think 3 years of this spewing each and every day…

these headlines should be read during halftime of the super bowl…

They are going to explore the suppression chamber link to containment vessel, the weakest link in the mark one reactor design, the oringinal reason why two? Of the engineers who designed reactor resigned, when this became apparent and no redesign was done, simple the suppression chamber is not large enough or robust enough to handle the stresses associated with meltdown and the link from containment vessel to suppression chamber is the Achilles heal.

Hm, so going over the stable with a fine tooth comb. The horse bolted three years ago. The stable is empty, just droppings on the floor. Where is the horse, NHK, tell us about the horse.

Tokyo Electric to look for more leaks at Fukushima reactor
Jan. 30, 2014 NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation)
Tokyo Electric is slowly finding out more about the damage at the reactor containment vessel. The destruction was caused by 2011 accident.

To cool molten nuclear fuel in the reactor containment vessel, Tokyo Electric is injecting water into the reactor. Because the circulation system was destroyed by 2011 accident, the water is leaking from the reactor containment vessel and pooling in the reactor and other connected buildings.

Tokyo Electric has reached an estimate that up to 3.3 tons of water per hour is leaking from the 2 leaks.
Tokyo Electric is pouring 4.5 tons of cooling water an hour into the reactor. This means more than 1 ton of water may be leaking from unknown holes or cracks, as the water does NOT stay in the reactor containment vessel.

Meanwhile, scientists and other humans, are discovering startling changes to the earth's biosphere.

Once TEPCO has completed a thorough inventory of the cracks, gouges, holes, perforations, breaches, and geysers oozing out of Fukushima, they will submit a report. The report may contain ideas to slow down said holes but it is certain that more study of the situation will be the only real outcome of such an effort.

Meanwhile, little Johnny and Susie in somewhere USA are experiencing unusual lethargy, coupled with enhanced irritability and diminished mirror-neuron capacity.

Ok, What I did find out is this:

Water is poured on to a melting core at 30,000 gallons per minute – (scientific estimation during an emergency meltdown)
    – 8.3 pounds is the weight of one gallon of water
    – 30,000 gallons of water weight 249,000 pounds
    – A short TON, commonly used in the US, is equal to 2000 pounds

ONE MINUTE – of water flowing over a SINGLE melted core is 124.5 TONS of water. (All based on 30,000 gallons per minute)
ONE HOUR – of water flowing over a SINGLE melted core is 7,470 TONS of water.
24 HOURS – of water flowing over a SINGLE melted core is 79,280 TONS of water.
1 WEEK – of water flowing over a SINGLE melted core is 1,254,960 TONS of water.
ONE YEAR – of water flowing over a SINGLE melted core is 65,257,920 TONS of water.
50 YEARS – of water flowing over a SINGLE melted core is 3,262,896,000 TONS of water.
100 YEARS – of water flowing over a SINGLE melted core is 6,525,792,000 TONS of water.
1000 YEARS – of water flowing over a SINGLE melted core is 6,525,792,000,000 TONS of water.
Now lets x3 melted cores = 19,577,376,000,000 tons of water.

So, I'm not a mathematician or a scientist but, this looks like a HUGE waste of valuable water resources and sea life all because someone wanted to screw the Public of $ Trillions of dollars just to create steam. Can't fix stupid!
