Title: Japan’s last online reactor to shut down
Source: NHK
Date: Wednesday, April 25, 2012 20:36 +0900 (JST)
Japan’s only online commercial nuclear reactor in the northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido is to be shut down for regular inspections early next month. [...]With the shutdown, all 50 commercial reactors in Japan will be offline if none of the reactors now halted for regular checks are allowed to resume operations. [...]
But it is unclear whether any of the reactors around the country now halted for inspections, including those in Fukui, can be restarted.

Easy, AGR. Tepco is now or soon will be a government-owned entity. Governments often don't take insurance on their ventures, the reasoning being that they have access to unlimited funds and don't need to waste the public's money on premiums to third party insurers.
The reality of course is that the public can be coerced by any government into paying for anything that happens.
Also… the old Tepco was/is largely owned by insurance companies and insurance/bank companies (largest shareholders), who could change policy at any arbitrary time according to their perceived self-interest.
You or I might not be able to go into business without insurance, but that's a different story.

TOMORROW, 26 YEARS AGO – April 26th, 1986.
An anniversary of a sacrifice that everyone in the world must never forget…
as many as 985,000 deaths.*
over 7 million irradiated.
336,000 evacuated.
Over 300,000 hectares of territory rendered uninhabitable for thousands of years. An area where no fewer than three billion persons inhabit contaminated by Chernobyl’s radionuclides. More than 50% of the surface of 13 European countries and 30% of eight other countries have been contaminated by Chernobyl fallout.*

Did someone say 14 melt downs in Japan – or is it now 16?

Right? Not including totals of spent fuel pools or waste management.

What is that number based on? What does it include?

majia, here is the enenews post:

Ok thank you for the links.
I was collecting your data about Tokai today Anne. Thank you for posting all of them…
I was worried by the offhand remark made by Kalidances about anticipating an explosion in Ibaraki this summer.
I am beginning to be worried that the stomach problems around me are actually from radiation exposure, but have no proof yet.
14 reactors would do it though, not to mention spent fuel pools burning off and on…
Regarding Ibaraki:

And in the comments to this posting I also posted information about the active earthquake faults under Higashidori NPP and Rokkasho nuclear reprocessing plant. There are also terrible problems at all these other NPPs as well as the 14 reactors at Fukushima Daiichi, Fuku Daini, Tokai Daini (and probably Tokay Daiichi), and Onogawa NPPs.
Report Comment
majia, I expected that you would have read about the admission that 14 other NPPs were also severewly damaged by the earthquake, and that that is why the NPPs have been shut down across Japan.
It kind of explains some of the ineffectual behavior by TEPCO – their employees are tryingto deal with so many crises all at once across the nation.
Report Comment
Yes it does Charlie.
I'm trying to understand the scope of this disaster and the lack of transparency has been both frustrating and, ultimately, frightening.
Report Comment
majia, the good and the bad thing is that understanding the scope of this disaster is entirely up to us. The lack of transparency and the coverup and ignorance is not really frightening if you just come to accept that this is the way the world is and this what our civilization has come down to and deal with it.

There were no new nuclear reactors started up for 30 years after TMI because people spoke up and protested. I believe that people will again make a difference. Sadly, the same fights have to be made over and over again. But ultimately we will be heard again. Will it be too late? Hopefully, not. As frightening as physical symptoms are, there is nope. I was green when I had cancer because it had spread throughout my body. But 23 years later, I am cancer free. And if we succumb physically, our efforts may help the future generations. We have to have hope for their sakes.
The food bank I went to was run by the Southern Baptist Church and much was donated by Walmart and I expect other super markets. There is still much to be hopeful about in the US. Where I substitute teach, most of the students receive free lunches and most of the elementary students also receive free breakfasts and there are schools who give out food on Friday afternoon so the children and families will have food to eat over the weekend.
Americans are very caring and generous will their donations at home and also abroad.

I say that there must be "something" that is allowing TEPCO to "RUN" the Japanese Trillion Dollar Eco-Disaster, instead of Japan screaming for International Help!
IMO it is that Japan had an illegal NUKE "lab" at Fukushima that the Japanese Gov't. cannot have made public at any cost…

Prediction!
I believe that the CURRENT PROBE into San Onofre will expose many more questionable tubes and also an ongoing coverup of safety related info that was concealed in order to sidestep NRC notifications. San Onofre has the worst safety record of all US reactors and it just makes sense that the Operator will be trying very hard to keep the lid on anything that draw attention to their reactor or it's operation.
The NRC gave the Nuclear Industry a "PASS" on the tube wear issue before on San Onofre and many of the other reactors around the Country http://wp.me/p21p6a-77L BUT NOW
They are realizing that they have a much bigger problem than they first "imagined"; metal erosion/weakness cannot be tolerated when the radioactive leakage is not only high in temperature and pressure but also high in amount of radiation!
Would you use a dangerous leaking pressure pot day after day,… or would you be smart and replace it with something safer?
Fragile tubes and a BIG EARTH QUAKE could makes a large number of those tubes all fail AT ONCE; which is what I think happened in Fukushima!

One has to wonder if some of the very high RadNet readings in cities like Bakersfield, CA (downwind from the San Onofre plant) are due to radiological releases. The Gamma readings were very, very high last fall and early in the winter.
Report Comment
And Fresno is east of the Diablo Canyon plant near San Luis Obispo. Fresno has also had some really high Beta readings.
Report Comment
Sorry, I meant very high Beta readings in Bakersfield.

Hi Cap'n, I don't quite follow your comment on the tube failures and Fukushima. The San Onofre plant is a PWR plant; Fuku Daichi has all BWR Mark 1 reactors.
Were you discussing effects of loss of cooling?

Or did you mean metal failure due to stress (during the earthquake)?
