Title: No timeline for full power at New Jersey nuclear reactor
Source: Reuters
Date: Nov 3, 2012
Public Service Enterprise Group Inc’s provided no timeline for its Salem 1 nuclear plant to fully start-up after it shut down from superstorm Sandy.
PSEG had not yet connected the plant to the regional grid, but “grid stability is not an issue at this time,” Joe Delmar, a PSEG spokesman said on Saturday. [...]
Title: Salem Unit 1, No Timeline For Restart
Source: SimplyInfo
Date: November 3rd, 2012
Reuters is reporting no timeline for restarting unit 1 at Salem after a high wave from hurricane Sandy took out 5 of the 6 water intake pumps. [...] It is likely that the widespread outages still going on across the area mean there is less demand for power. It could also be that they are still repairing the intake pumps for Salem yet choose to not publicly disclose the status of this issue.

"…grid stability is not an issue at this time…"
That's because Sandy was a Cat 1, not a Cat 5. What, wait until a Cat 5 hits to make it a priority?

Oh, "…grid stability was not an issue at this time…because Sandy was (only) a Cat 1…" ???
Grid stability is also not an issue when "…a high wave takes out 5 of 6 intake pumps that cool the reactor…":

Huh, so Salem Unit 1 is offline, right?
Sandy-shuttered US nuclear power units back online
(AFP) – 1 day ago
WASHINGTON — Three nuclear power units shut down in the US northeast due to the superstorm Sandy have restarted operations, the US Energy Department said Friday.
Two reactors in New York state and one in New Jersey were back online and had ramped up power by Friday, the department said.
"All nuclear power units in the Northeastern United States that were shut down as a result of impacts from Hurricane Sandy have been restarted and are ramping up power output," it said.
In addition, all nuclear power units whose output had been reduced as a result of the storm have been restored to 100 percent power, the department said.
The violent storm that wracked the East Coast on Monday and Tuesday forced the closure of the three reactors: the Salem 1 unit near Salem, New Jersey; the Nine Mile Point unit 1 in Scriba, New York; and the Indian Point reactor 3 in Buchanan, New York.
In its latest post-storm update, the department said that as of 7:00 am (1200 GMT), 3.6 million households in the affected area remained without power, compared with more than 8 million at the peak of the crisis.
The country's 104 active nuclear reactors supply 20 percent of the national electricity power.

Thank you for noting that, or-well!
For everyone:
The Lawrence Livermore Chart shows nuclear usage is 8.26%, not 20%
And good news: from 2010-2011, Wind Power increased 27 percent, and Hydroelectricity increased 26 percent!

Typical mainstream media often has nukes share in Japan up to 30%. It was 11 point something for fiscal year 2009, and that was from an official J-Gov site. Good luck finding it now.

M Curie, Gaffney can speak for h/h self of course, but my conjecture is the poster is disparaging the site gr81 linked to.
However, the specific article at that link is itself but a compilation of decidedly mainstream and relevant articles on the situation.

Goodnite Gaffney: We don't need to see you. I am very, very tired of re-writing all the detailed, authoritative scholarly articles I've written on this. The most recent, about how chemtrails to modify the effects of fossil fuels on global warming was researched by 3 Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory physicists: To wit — Edward Teller of Manhattan Project and H-Bomb fame (The Super), Lowell Wood and Roderick Hyde.
Go find it and inform yourself before you bad rap others who are more fully informed than you are. The comment was to Richard sometime within the last week.
I'm really tired of wasting my time talking to superior rationalist numb=skulls and dumb-bells.
Usually I am polite, but I'm tired of wasting my time of folks like you.

I am suspect of the integrity of the radiation networks readings. As of late when readings get close to alarm levels it suddenly drops or disappears. Also Youtube is being suspiciously censored as more citizens are becoming aware of fukushima and the sinkhole in louisianna. ENE seems to be only credible source of info. Any thoughts on this?

We all are sorely missing Alexander Higgins website which informed the public about radiation readings which the EPA knew but did not publish in an understandable form. I hope everyone is helping him so he can get back up and running. See the forum on current affairs (non-nuclear) for information on how to help him regain a toehold after Hurricane Sandy's surge abolished his house and servers.

I think there is VERY substantial question about the number of circulators lost at Salem. The original event report they gave to NRC makes it very clear they lost every one of them:
http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/event-status/event/2012/20121031en.html#en48457 : "A subsequent loss of the 2 remaining circulators required transition of decay heat removal from condenser steam dumps to the 11-14 MS10s (atmospheric steam dump)." The steam-dump would not have been needed if they had a single operating condenser circulator, as then they could've just condensed the steam!
Yet even nuclear-critical sources are quoting either 4 as http://truth-out.org/news/item/12471-oyster-creek-nuclear-alert-as-floodwaters-fall-more-questions-arise or 5 like SimplyInfo. So what gives? Both evidence from needing to take a steam dump and power company's own report to NRC admit they lost all.
Main feedwater (service water) is not absolutely necessary as huge tanks on-site hold auxiliary feedwater that can be use to cool the primary reactor coolant loop and the ensuing steam is dumped into atmosphere, but had the auxiliary feedwater been unavailable as well due to storm damage they'd had very likely TMI-style core meltdown (In TMI auxiliary feedwater valves had been closed for maintenance against regulations).

It is VERY strange that they are not back up and running after having only MINOR problems…
DOn't they need the money from making electricity?
Our guess is that major problems developed and they are keeping the secret, as all nukleocrats do, when things go wrong.

Nine Mile Point Unit 1 shut down automatically today after a part failed that controls water levels in its reactor pressure vessel, according to owner Constellation Energy Nuclear Group.http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2012/11/feedwater_system_flaw_shuts_do.html
Scriba, NY – The Nine Point Unit 1 nuclear plant in Scriba shut down this morning after a component failed that controls the water level in the vessel containing its nuclear fuel, the plant’s owner said.
The automatic shutdown took place at 8:23 a.m. when instruments detected too much water in the reactor pressure vessel at Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station Unit 1, said Jill Lyon, speaking for Constellation Energy Nuclear Group, the owner.

In my mind..it brings up the same question as Fukushima.
The high waves took out the main cooling pumps yet the emergency generators went unscathed?
Report Comment
PS..Perhaps they were brought in..how so?
Report Comment
The lack of information about Salem 1 and 100% shutdown for NO REASON says MUCH MORE than the 'normal' startup and operation at 100% power.
Report Comment
There is a GOOD possibility that they are covering up a meltdown or something like it.
Why?
First, they lost all SIX cooling pumps.
Second, they lost the backup cooling system.
Third, the auxilary tanks with cooling water only last 1 DAY.
Fourth, they were disconnected from the grid and/or the grid was DOWN, so no power was coming into the plant.
Where did they get more cooling water, with NO PUMPS, NO storage tank water, and no power coming in from the grid?
Report Comment
@ AGreenRoad..Thanks for elaborating on this.
Report Comment
The last and ONLY news we heard from the plant operator after the storm was done and gone, was that they were 'repairing' the cooling pumps.
If the pumps just got clogged, it would not take a 'repair'. Just pull the debris out and you are ready to go. Get the plant online and back up to 100% power.
If the waves knocked out the pumps, why would those same waves not also take out the emergency generators as well, just like at Fukushima?
