Nuclear Power after Fukushima | Special Series on Post-Disaster Japan
Uploaded by: Harvard
Uploaded on: August 7, 2012
Speaker: Charles Ferguson, President, Federation of American Scientists
At ~33:00 in
Ferguson: They’re in a problem here. So they can’t operate the vents. Steam builds up, and the reactor keeps boiling and boiling and boiling. And there is no fresh water being pumped in, no power, the pumps aren’t operating.
So as the water boils around the fuel rods, they become uncovered and then that steam can interact with the fuel rods, producing hydrogen gas.
And the hydrogen gas, it takes just one spark to ignite it. And it can blow a hole, either in this pipe in the torus, or actually through the containment structure or the reactor pressure vessel.
Bio: “Dr. Ferguson also has consulted with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, and the National Nuclear Security Administration. From 2000 to 2002, he served as a physical scientist in the Office of the Senior Coordinator for Nuclear Safety at the U.S. Department of State, where he helped develop U.S. government policies on nuclear safety and security issues. After graduating with distinction from the United States Naval Academy, he served as an officer on a fleet ballistic missile submarine and studied nuclear engineering at the Naval Nuclear Power School.”

Breaking News: Explosions break things!
Report Comment
perhaps you should break it to tepco and j-gov. they have been claiming all along that the explosion was OUTSIDE containment and in the reactor building.
Report Comment
OK, so either a hydrogen explosion, or a prompt localized criticality, or a giant steam explosion, can blow a mark 1 reactor sky high.
Shut'em down now already…

At 37:25 in there is a chart listing "Management and Safety Culture Problems in Japan".
One of the items on that list states the following:
"One-sided picture of nuclear power was presented to the public before the accident."
Now there's an understatement.
I would say that same picture has been presented to us all.

I SO agree!!

"One-sided picture of nuclear power was presented to the public before the accident."
And all over the world that one sided pic is being horrendously repeated after the accident as well.
See for example the psychiatricky Japanese authored WHO Report which turns round and contradicts itself:
The article reveals the typical criminal collusion between it and the IAEA.
See for example the statement
"the effects of prolonged exposure to low-level radiation on human health have not yet been determined.4"
And then later:
"For elderly Japanese people reared in country villages, being torn from the land of their ancestors and moved to an unfamiliar environment can cause more stress and harm than direct exposure to radiation. Whereas their physical health is not likely to be affected in the short term by the radiation or the measures taken to protect them from it, evacuation from the land of central importance to the stability of their community and sense of belonging can greatly undermine their health."
These statements are contradictory. They are still in the pre DNA era and base their observations of ICRP radiation risk model which with the advent of the ECRR 2003/2010 Risk Regulations are pure witchcraft.
See the unscientific way in which the ICRP risk model is based on effects of external irradiation to assess the effects of internal irradiation as detailed at
2010 Recommendations of the ECRR – European Committee on …

"…all over the world that one sided pic is being horrendously repeated…" – R Kumar
That's the part people need to know.
They, 'the experts', admit it, right here, on film for all to see.
Presenting such a one sided picture is a 'manipulation' of people on a matter that should not, must not, ever be decided by a few.
One could also call it propaganda or one could also call it premeditated and criminal.

Expert say could have blown hole through the containment vessels.
Don't need an expert for that opinion..sorry.
Just looking at the original explosions…it is very clear..
X-containment had been achieved.
(Duh..Harvard)
