Nuclear industry analysts Arnie and Maggie Gundersen of Fairewinds Energy Education (non-profit) discuss the similarities between the BWR Mark 1 reactors at Fukushima Daiichi and Vermont Yankee. The Gundersens also discuss the issue of federal pre-emption in the NRC’s decision to approve VY’s license renewal, the Vermont Legislature’s decision that VY is not reliable and therefore should shut down, and Judge Murtha’s decision to allow the plant to continue to operate over the state’s objections.

    Regardless of the pro nuke lies, if you live in the US you were partly poisoned.

    In fact if they had been honest, people could have done simple things like stay out of the rain and avoided much internal contamination. But "they" didn't, because they are a the nuke cartel, and their profits and egos are more important to them than your health.

    Take their toys away, over 1% of all nuke plants blow up…..FACT

    Meanwhile, Tokyo residents are walking around on nuclear toxic waste, while their government urges them to "Support by eating". I guess the Japanese people are a bit slow to anger.

    The good people of Tokyo are *inhaling* radioactive waste, it is not just under their feet, it is in the air their children breathe.

    Inhaling plutonium has successfully killed the beagle dogs they have tested for over 40 years. Yet here is "black dust" with fatal amounts of radioactivity, including high levels of Alpha, that threatens the people in Japan, the United States and elsewhere.

    I don't understand the people of the United States. We are all far too slow to anger. We all must come together in recognition of the danger that we face as human beings.

      From the first days of the catastrophe, some of the highest levels of radioactivity were detected in Florida and Boston, indicating that the whole of the United States was poisoned then, and has been being poisoned for over a year, including today, most likely. It is not a problem confined to either Japan or the West Coast, as there was aerosolized plutonium in Lithuania, etc..

      While people in Japan have marched, flooded government meetings, risked their lives to detect Alpha in the black dust, I don't know of a single march to raise awareness about Fukushima in the United States, yet there have been higher levels of radioactivity detected in the United States than in some parts of Japan.

        Most people do not even know what is going on.. Mass media spoon feeds sheeple who eat it up, and go no further.

        Unless the TV says to demonstrate, no one is doing anything.

        If the TV says it is all OK, then it is all ok, no matter what reality is doing..

        Appearance versus reality.. that is the issue confronting us all…

        Individually, in politics, religion and in all other organizations.

        Denial is not a river running through Egypt, it runs right through and over us.

        The cost of denial is HUGE…

        It takes suffering to wake people up out of denial.. we may not have long to wait..

          Actually, the Tea Party and Occupy movements massive WERE DEMONSTRATIONS.. but they both got coopted and taken over in different ways.

          Neither mass movement demonstrated around nuclear power, although some within the Occupy movement know about these nuclear issues.

    With regard to Vermont Yankee, I don't understand how the federal government gets away with claiming the NRC has the exclusive authority to make determinations about the impact of nuclear plants on public health and safety. The states' inherent police power gives them the authority to make laws to protect the health, safety, and well-being of their people and their environment. Under the Atomic Energy Act, the Congress gave authority to make judgements about the safety of nuclear plants to a federal agency, but I don't see how that federally granted authority can nullify the state's inherent and pre-existing authority to legislate on matters of public health/safety. If there were any other type of plant or factory in the state whose shoddy operation and maintenance posed a real threat to their people and environment, there would be no question that the state of Vermont would have the authority to act to shut down that plant/factory. How can the authority to make such determinations with regard to nuclear plants be taken away from them?

    The Atomic Energy Act was NOT a constitutional amendment. It seems to me that the Congress could therefore only grant a concurrent authority to the federal agency to regulate about these matters, but they did NOT have the authority take away from the states the right to legislate for the protection of their own people and environment with regard to nuclear plants, anymore than they would for any other type of industrial or environmental threat/polluter.

    Hasn't any state ever directly challenged the constitutionality of this part of the Atomic Energy Act? If not, why not? It seems to me Vermont had an opportunity to tackle this issue head on, but instead chose the more cautious approach of saying the plant's not reliable.

    The Atomic Energy Act usurps a legitimate power of the state to protect its people and its land. Congress has no constitutional authority to take that authority away from state governments.

      You run under the false assumption that the US Constitution and Bill of Rights are still valid instruments of government control. They have both been usurped.

      Case in point….

      A US Congressman BEGS the NRC to refuse to license an old reactor in Ohio (and other places like Yankee). Step back and look at that in a Constitutional way. A US Congressman, a US Senator, the President and Supreme Court Justices are SUPPOSED to be at the TOP of the heap of government employees, answerable to the PEOPLE voting in the little booth. Obviously, from what you can see now, this is no longer the case. The NRC bureaucrats are OVER the Congressmen and Senators. Otherwise the Congressman would INSTRUCT the NRC to refuse to renew the license because the PEOPLE have decided they didn't want it to kill their kids. Now, it's the NRC telling the Congressman THEY are the true nuclear power in the country and Congressmen/Senators will do as THEY, and their nuclear power company buddies, bid them to do.

      The implications of this observation are truly terrifying. What if some Army general decides, by himself because of his religious delusions that "came to me in a vision last night" to nuke Moscow or Tehran or Paris? Is the General, not the President crosschecked by the declaration of war by Congress, in real control of the nukes, now? Think about that…. What if one of the military contractors the General believes is good for his retirement tells the General to blow up Moscow? Can he do it like NRC tells Congressmen to go to hell and issues licenses WITHOUT their express permission…and accountability?

    I agree that the big trans-national corporations are in charge and have 'bought' governments and by-and-large control the planet's centers of power.

    Admittedly reading that about plutonium made me feel 'hopeless' – but for me I think it is, living in HI as I do and being in my late 60s. I've had that feeling since early on in the reporting of the Fuk. disaster. (I already knew a good deal of the info on plutonium, but that article explains it all so well and is very thorough.)

    When I found Arnie first video I linked him to this site and told you folks I believe in this man and he could be trusted !

    He gas not fail us even though he has had to stand on ground many would not stray !
