[...] Junichi Matsumoto, Tepco’s general manager, told reporters on Monday [...] there was little sign of steam, which would be produced when water is at such a high temperature, and Tepco believes the reactor is still in cold shutdown, meaning temperatures are stable below boiling point. [...]

“The instruments are showing readings that are difficult to understand but I believe we don’t have to change our view that the plant is in cold shutdown,” [Environment Minister Goshi Hosono] said in parliament.

“Nevertheless we continue to assess the situation ready for all possibilities.”

Of the recent footage from inside the Reactor No. 2 containment vessel, nuclear expert Arnold Gundersen said on a Feb. 11 broadcast (at 5:40 into the program): “They sent a little camera into Reactor No. 2, you can’t see much, it’s high, high humidity which you’d expect because the nuclear core is not in the nuclear reactor its on the floor, so all of that heat is creating steam and looks like sort of like a scene from the movie Alien, everything is kind of dripping and oozing.”
