Daniel Hirsch Speaking at Rally

Daniel Hirsch of CommitteeToBridgeTheGap.org, UCLA professor: If that radioactivity were released you could wipe out a substantial portion of California for generations.
And the only thing that prevents that radioactive material from getting out is if the coolant keeps operating…
You can have a release of radioactivity on a scale that no one can really imagine…

In addition to the catastrophic loss of life, much of the food grown for the US comes from California. They shouldn't run nuclear power plants in Calif just because the fines incurred would bankrupt the companies. There should be no subsidies, but rather huge fines for running any nuclear power plant. The cost to human life and the ecosystems of the planet should also be costs borne by the nuclear industry as a fine levied before running any nuclear power plant. These fines should not be paid by the government. Taxpayers should not pay for the nuclear industry to gamble with their treasure of money and life. The nuclear industry is NOT capitalistic, but is run by fascism, i.e. huge government subsidies.
Just like the failed financial institutions which received huge bailouts for their corrupt gambling debts. What happened to free enterprise? What happened to the value of a human life? What happened to the morality which would save our environment for future generations? Why should our future generations pay the price for a bunch of immoral fascists to get rich today?

Your not entitled to the information of the numerous nuclear accidents, deliberate nuclear experiments, and fallout information available from your government. You can not see it, smell it, or taste it.
The EPA stopped recording the fallout data early 2011. Plausible deniability, don't go there, and the threat to national security are real.
US media owned by corporate GOV has been ordered to not cover the global threat, its a crime to discuss Fukushima, or related stories in mainstream media.
Is there a public relations rep from the American main stream media that frequent here?

Another expert that's a day late and a dollar short.
Fukushima already screwed California.
It's all about 'if'. We're way past 'if'.
Report Comment
+1 Time is Short. Although we are way past "if", it can still get infinitely worse and will soon if steps aren't taken immediately to decommission all nuclear reactors. On another forum, someone said that radiation is in all soil. It is everywhere and getting worse very fast, every day. All we can do is weigh the probabilities of survival depending on what we eat, drink, breathe, and what action we take.

Could U.S. Nuclear Plants Withstand a Tsunami?
In the wake of the crisis gripping Japan, should we take a second look at nuclear plants closer to home?
Thu Mar 17, 2011
Experts are calling for new risk assessments of the vulnerability of nuclear plants in the path of natural disasters.
Each of the 104 reactors in the United States has to undergo individual testing for local risks.
More than 80 reactors worldwide are located in seismically active areas.

Timeline of Nuclear Disasters
December 1952 – Chalk River Experimental Reactor, Canada
World's first major nuclear reactor disaster. Power surge and partial loss of coolant leads to core damage – an extensive cleanup effort is required
…
March 11–20, 2011 – Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant, Japan (INES Level 7) Partial meltdowns in multiple reactors leads to fires, explosions, and the release of substantial amounts of hazardous nuclear materials into the environment. Two people die.

"..If an accident caused the release of 10% of the tanks’ contents, it is calculated that the fallout would be 50 times the maximum level experienced in Norway after Chernobyl. A major accident is of course considered to be less likely than more limited releases. However, the British authorities have not provided Norway with any specific information indicating that such an incident can be ruled out…"

Regulator warns of design vulnerability
30 July 2012
"..Nuclear regulators have instructed licensees of US nuclear power plants to provide information about the designs of their electric power systems after an incident earlier this year revealed a potential weak spot.
Events at Exelon's Byron revealed the potential problem (Image: NRC)
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has alerted all licensees to a "potential design vulnerability" which it says could affect the operation of key safety equipment in the event of problems with off-site power. The flaw was revealed in a 30 January incident at Exelon's Byron 2, when the unit automatically shut down because of unbalanced voltage entering the onsite power distribution system from the transmission network.
Plant operators had to manually trip the necessary circuits to isolate the degraded external power source and switch to emergency power, because the protection scheme for the plant's electric power system was not designed to do this automatically.."

..I guess… I was musing on the fact..that stories about nuke plants in the US..usually make top story and are instantly understood by the public.
"You can have a release of radioactivity on a scale that no one can really imagine".
Yet..we have spent millions of words describing what has already occurred at Fukushima.
And the general population doesn't get it…

These guys, Daniel Hirsch, Joanna Macy etc. are all truly great heroes of our time.
I wish that I could get them all to come and speak in London. I'm sure that we could muster a greater number than those outside the steps in Berkeley.
What an inspirational video.

The University of Nuclear Bombs
z PLUS 1 week ago
Excerpt from the "The University of Nuclear Bombs" (2010), a feature documentary film I directed and edited about the role that the University of California has in the US nuclear weapons complex since the inception of nuclear weapons and the group of young activists who are organizing to pressure the university to cease their nuclear weapons research and manufacturing efforts. The film features interviews with Noam Chomsky, Daniel Ellsberg, Richard Falk, Helen Caldicott, David Krieger and other leading analysts in the subject of nuclear weapons. It was an Official Selection to the Documentary Section of the 25th Annual Santa Barbara Film Festival and was nominated to the 2010 Fund For Santa Barbara Social Justice Award.
