Title: Japan struggles with nuclear decontamination
Source: Al Jazeera English
Date: 23 Apr 2012 17:07
[...] “The Japanese government at last recognises that the return to contaminated zones will be far more complex than they originally stated,” Jan Vande Putte, radiation expert at Greenpeace International, told Al Jazeera on Monday.
“For about a year, they have been creating false expectations to the evacuated population. However, they still miss the point. Tens of thousands of people are still living today in highly contaminated areas…This population gets no help and by giving priority to the return of population to evacuated zones, the government has effectively abandoned this critical group.”
He said the government had now admitted that decontamination would be “far more complex that [it] originally said”. [...]

""It's been a year already, and nothing," organic farmer Muneo Kano, 61, said when asked if the government had made any effort to remove the layer of radioactive soil that blanketed his seven-hectare farm."
THE TIMESCALE OF 5 YEARS DOSENT MAKE SENSE?
it will take 2 years for the levels to peak if the example of chernobyl is any thing to go by and the contamination will be severe for at least twenty years or more! scottish lamb got under the 1024 bq/kg last year.. (briefly) uk monitoring was stopped against the advice of the monitoring team!! DO NOT EAT UK/IRISH LAMB!!
cesium will be working its way into the ground and will effect different plants etc as it gets deeper!

I want to put this here where many regular posters will see it.
Some of you may have heard of a bell-selling writer on the subject of energy and Peak Oil, a New Yorker named James Kunstler.
Until now, he has been pro-nuclear.
Today, for the first time since March 11, 2011, he quietly (and briefly) conceded that Fukushima is a serious disaster in his weekly post at his website.
I think that his take of the (soon?) coming economic and social collapse due to to lack of energy will be of interest to some here, and I hope that some of you will be interested in bringing jim up to speed about Fukushima.
If you want to visit his site to see what it is all about and perhaps join the debate there (they have some great people in the comment section there), the website is:
http://kunstler.com/blog/2012/04/as-if-nothing-matters.html
I hope that it is ok that I have posted this here. Thanks, one and all beloved posters and admin at enenews, charlie

OMG. What incredible news charlie. Pro-nuke turned anti-nuke. TY!

I guess not so anti-nuke but sure can connect the dots. Thanks again.

Hi, Whoopie – as I say, he is an important and influential writer on energy issues, and until now, he felt that nukes would solve our fuure energy needs as petroleum runs out, so any change on that front is a good thing.
Like most of us here, he needs time to get his head around fukushima and how it changes everything.
I'm hoping that we can help him.

"the truth is that no combination of solar, wind, nuclear power, ethanol, biodiesel, tar sands and used French-fry oil will allow us to power … the interstate highway system – or even a fraction of these things – in the future…our quandary: the American public's narrow focus on keeping all our cars running at any cost." (Kunstler, 2008).
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/23/AR2008052302456_pf.html
I've never thought of Kunstler as pro-nuke, rather I've seen him as strongly anti-suburbia. He was one of the first to warn of peak oil, as you say, so I imagine that might have played into the hands of nuke, who are always ready to exploit any perceived weakness in the other energy giants.
Anyway, I hope you're right Charlie, but I think the huge problems Kunstler has focused on for decades look even worse when he has to discount nuke as part of the solution – and nuke must be eliminated – I have no doubt of that. Kunstler's message was desperate and urgent even before Fukushima. It's all the more challenging now.
Report Comment
aigeezer, you're right, nukes could never solve all of Peak Oil's problems, but at least Kunstler thought that it would provide light and warm showers.

Thanks Charlie. Though I think the overdue economic and social collapse will not be caused by a lack of energy.
(well, by a lack of energy to protest, maybe)

and the children of fukushima have been abandoned by the UN
THIS IS AN EXTRACT FROM THE LAST PETITION IN DECEMBER 2011
"…
Expand the evacuation area. Urgently carry out measures required for the evacuation of people: especially from regions where radiation contamination is high, of pregnant women, infants, children and students.
Revoke the increase of the yearly radiation exposure level to 20 millisieverts (mSv). Lower the legal allowances of radiation in food. Sincerely consider internal radiation exposure: protect the original standard of safe total yearly exposure to the whole body at 1 millisievert of radiation.
Administer long-term health assistance for local residents exposed to radiation, assessing all possibilities, including external and internal (air, water, food) exposure. Compensate victims of radiation exposure…."

“On March 11, 2011, at the time of the Japan nuclear incident, 25 of the 124 installed RadNet monitors, or 20 percent, were out of service for an average of 130 days,” the report says. “In addition, six of the 12 RadNet monitors we sampled (50 percent) had gone over eight weeks without a filter change, and two of those for over 300 days,” the report adds, noting that EPA policy calls on operators to change the filters twice per week.

Awesome find, Whoopie! Thank you! Did you give Majia this link? I know she'll be very interested to see this report, as she had contacted the EPA about this very issue, and of course, did not get a satisfactory answer.
In addition to the faulty air testing, I was frustrated that they pulled the plug on drinking water testing for Seattle after gathering their last sample on March 28 of last year. We all know that the Fuku fallout continued to rainout throughout April, and yet, the EPA stopped testing in March??? Knowing the watershed would take time to accumulate fallout, it was obvious to me why they stopped testing.
What's more, after several attempts to get their local Region 10 office to reveal when the results of their "regular quarterly testing" would appear (they had claimed they had reverted back to their normal quarterly testing) , they promised mid-August 2011, then when they missed that, September. But they never did post any results for radiation testing in Seattle drinking water. Their excuse for being late was they relied on volunteers to deliver the samples to the labs. I even offered to volunteer to help speed up the process. But it was all a bunch of malarkey. There still are no test results that I can find on their online searchable database. And I don't think they have ANY updating drinking water results for any cities, for that matter…Everyone should call their local region's office and find out where those test results are.

Are your taxes being paid to these EPA slackers?
Cos someone should take the money back if the lowlives are doing nothing but sit on their arse and lie.

Decontamination isn't more complex, it's been a pipe dream PR campaign that had no grounds in reality. If anything, it's becoming simpler as it approaches the truth.
