Transcript of Interview With Ichiro Ozawa, Wall Street Journal by Yuka Hayashi and Toko Sekiguchi, May 26, 2011:
Japan senior political figure Ichiro Ozawa
[I]t’s meaningless to put together a team made up exclusively of people who depend on nuclear power to make a living. All of them are members of the nuclear mafia. Did you see all those scholars saying “the crisis is not so terrible,” “won’t harm the health at all” on TV? What they say is meaningless because they depend on nuclear power for their livelihood. But people, and the Japanese media, don’t understand it. The Japanese media is helpless. [...]

Radiation protection racket?
Report Comment
That’s an easy problem to solve. I heard they are taking applicants at the plant in Fukushima, these highly postive people can work at the nuclear plant, digging, hauling, whatever. I truly believe there are people who believe that radiation is harmless…Fukushima needs folk like this to help with the clean up effort….now that’s a match made in…heaven!

Ozawa’s comment is like that one from “An Inconvenient Truth”. I don’t remember the exact wording but it said,
“It’s hard to make a person see the truth when their paycheck is dependent on their not seeing it.”
So true.
These people place their industry above everything else, and will fight to the death for its preservation no matter the costs to people or the environment.

NHK BREAKING
Radioactive materials found off Miyagi and Ibaraki
Japan’s science ministry has detected extraordinarily high levels of radioactive cesium in seafloor samples collected off Miyagi and Ibaraki Prefectures.
Experts say monitoring should be stepped up over a larger area to determine how fish and shell fish are being affected.
The ministry collected samples from 12 locations along a 300-kilometer stretch off Fukushima prefecture’s Pacific coast between May 9th and 14th. It hoped to get an idea about the spread of nuclear contamination caused by the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
Radioactive substances were found in all locations, including those off Miyagi and Ibaraki Prefectures, which had not been previously investigated.
Radioactive cesium 134, measuring 110 becquerels per kilogram or about 100 times the normal level, was found in samples collected from the seabed 30 kilometers off Sendai City and 45 meters beneath the surface.
Samples collected from the seabed 10 kilometers off Mito City and 49 meters beneath the surface measured 50 becquerels or about 50 times the normal level.

NHK has a video of the “inspection” visit – but I didn’t watch it (don’t have the plug-in for Mac).
Perhaps it is a translation error, but the tag of the photo says IAEA folks “watch No.3 reactor”. You watch a show, an activity; you look at a building – sounds like Reactor 3 is doing something.
As for IAEA brass, is it possible this nightmare devastation might trigger a ripple of doubt, “What have we wrought?”

RADIATION IN TOKYO
One of your typical “things are not that bad” articles:
http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/nn20110528f1.html
The ploy:
1. Your Geiger counter is cheap – possible wrong readings
2. You’re not using your Geiger counter properly – so you might get HIGH readings
3. You’re measuring at the wrong height
4. You’re not measuring at the same spot over time
—–
“The group of volunteer radiation researchers publishes on the Internet radiation levels in 19 different places, 1 meter above ground, in Tokyo as well as many places in other prefectures.
A point in Katsushika Ward shows the highest level in Tokyo. A volunteer has been checking there since March 25 and the level has been roughly between 0.3 and 0.5 microsievert per hour and has not exceeded 0.4 so far this month. That compares with other places in Tokyo that have marked roughly 0.1 microsievert in May.
Assuming that the figure will be 0.4 microsievert per hour constantly in the next 12 months and a person stays at that spot, which is outdoors, 24 hours a day, the cumulative exposure would be 3.5 millisieverts a year, exceeding the government’s recommended maximum intake of 1 millisievert a year during normal times, but smaller than the 20-millisievert recommendation in times of a nuclear accident.”
———————————-
Keep in mind, there might be some truth to this – people not using Geiger counters properly, or using cheap ones, giving false or inadequate readings.
Report Comment
@PU239 “Keep in mind, there might be some truth to this – people not using Geiger counters properly, or using cheap ones, giving false or inadequate readings.”
Unfortunately this is true. However, any indication, even relative, is better than no indication at all. The readings would not be useful in a legal sense – but for self-preservation? Certainly; especially if you can no longer trust the authorities to honour their commitments.
Report Comment
Also, any small personal device that shows Sieverts/hour is a modern instrument, and probably less finicky than the classic Geiger counter. In fact I believe they use a different technology and are not technically Geiger counters at all. Anybody know?
Report Comment
Most of them use a Geiger-Müller tube of some sorts.
My personal experience with the cheaper ones is that they tend to show lower values because they only measure gamma, when we have quite high alpha and beta content.
It doesn’t really matter whether you measure this or that way as long as you say so, the device, the ground type, then you can start to compare readings.
Note that some government sensors are 20m up in the air, showing low values. The stuff is on the ground, though so it is important to measure there. Usually 1m or 50cm above ground is used.
Report Comment
They realy should measure radiation in “Geigers” per hour. Then people would know what they are counting with a Geiger counter.
Report Comment
Life’s not so simple…
Report Comment
One other thing: if you take 10 people’s “incompetent” readings you can get a pretty good clue whether something is up or not.
Also we now know that there hotspots and the government has only started realising this. See here:

Thanks guys. I’ve seen a lot of live cams and YouTubes with personal dosimeters, but the only brand name I remember is NukAlert. I checked their site and their design seems to be proprietary, or at least not typical: they talk about Geiger-Muller tubes and other approaches, and then say the NukAlert sensor is “composed of a Cadmium Sulfide Photoconductive cell viewing a Gadolinium OxySulfide scintillating phosphor …”

Vaguely remembering the cadmium thingy, plus noticing that GMs are typically fairly bulky, underlay my original comment. But I’m still curious, and will post any further discoveries in a later thread.

As nuke workers wait, tainted water climbs
By KAZUAKI NAGATA
Staff writer Japan Times
Saturday, May 28, 2011
While Tokyo Electric Power Co. plans to set up a water treatment facility in mid-June to decontaminate the thousands of tons of radioactive water being generated at the Fukushima No. 1 power plant, the utility must also find a safe place to store it before it leaks into the ground or finds its way to the sea.
Compounding the problem are the reactors, which are believed to be ridden with cracks, holes or damaged pipes that are allowing the water being used to cool what’s left of the reactor cores to escape.
With the rainy season approaching, speed is of the essence. But experts say plugging the leaks is extremely difficult because of the high radiation, which means Tepco could be stuck with the water for years.
“The tainted water needs to be processed as quickly as possible,” said Kenji Takeshita, a professor at the Research Laboratory for Nuclear Reactors at the Tokyo Institute of Technology and an expert on nuclear waste disposal. “If the amount continues to increase, there will be nowhere to store it. And if it overflows, the water could leak into the sea, which will be a big problem.”
The tainted water is becoming such a big problem in fact that it is interfering with the beleaguered utility’s main task of securing the stricken reactors.

Censorship of Internet in Japan (and other media) a new team to delete “harmful” Fukushima information
This is a really troubling development. The internal security apparatus of Japan is contacting media and internet services to begin deletion of certain information.
“[T]he Japanese government has moved to crack down on independent reportage and criticism of the government’s policies in the wake of the disaster by deciding what citizens may or may not talk about in public. A new project team has been created by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication, the National Police Agency, and METI to combat “rumors” deemed harmful to Japanese security in the wake of the Fukushima disaster.
“The government charges that the damage caused by earthquakes and by the nuclear accident are being magnified by irresponsible rumors, and the government must take action for the sake of the public good. The project team has begun to send “letters of request” to such organizations as telephone companies, internet providers, cable television stations, and others, demanding that they “take adequate measures based on the guidelines in response to illegal information. ”The measures include erasing any information from internet sites that the authorities deem harmful to public order and morality.”

Helen Caldicott- Nuclear health Expert
One of the most deadly [nuclear byproducts] is plutonium, named after Pluto, god of the underworld. One millionth of a gram, if you inhale it, would give you cancer. Hypothetically, one pound of plutonium if evenly distributed could give everyone on earth cancer. Each reactor has 250 kilograms [550 lbs] of plutonium in it. You only need 2.5 kilograms [5.5 lbs] to make an atomic bomb, because plutonium is what they make bombs with.

I have been feeding my baby fruit jam that was made in Europe b/c it contained no sugar, only juice. Oops, instead of sugar, now I have a baby loaded with extra cesium. Yum…
A note on chlorella if anyone here is taking it. My stomach didn’t react well, so I did some research on it. Though it might not say so on the bottle of chlorella, you should not take a VIT C supplement within 3 HOURS of taking chlorella. Acc to several health sites, doing so will UNBIND the heavy metals and dump it back to your blood stream. Another mistake I made… Also, they advised best time to take chorella for detox is 30 minutes before mealtime, if you tummy can tolerate it.

It’s like Tempera Paint powder….like green powdered egg yolk.

In 1990, one of Japan’s greatest film producers Akira Kurosawa wrote the screenplay for his movie Dreams. This film consists of eight vignettes based on actual dreams that Kurosawa experienced. One of those is this prophetic and harrowing story entitled “Mount Fuji in Red”:

I think I deflated my mood when I cruised their forum today in Japan, an English language one, and I swear, every post was about how uninformed and I guess, stupid we were for our random out of control thinking and thoughts. From all walks of life were the comments and even from our side of the waters – all stating we essentially have the complete story wrong. Left me reeling a bit, even more aligned with looking after me and mine and not waste energy worrying about them if they aren’t. But it is hard to stay there for me when I consider all the info and believe if it were me there, I would be running anywhere away from certain sickness and or death.
I know we don’t have this ass-backwards and again thanks for posting because maybe they will change their mind after they see all our info here. It would be sad yet inspiring for a new member to reveal how this is the first they learned of the situation and they live in Japan themselves. This place is pretty important I believe.
