News Advance, North Anna restart may take months: “We don’t have a lot of experience in this area,” said Eric J. Leeds, director of the NRC’s Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation. “It looks like we’ll see a lot of each other over the next few weeks — hopefully not months.”

Economic Times: “I feel safer here than I do driving up and down the highway,” said Michael Duffey, who handles internal communications at the [North Anna nuclear] plant, during the tour.

On September 8, 2011 at 1538 PDT, the San Onofre Units 2 and 3 reactors tripped due to a grid disturbance. All control rods fully inserted. The EFAS (Emergency Feed Actuation System) initiated as expected for a reactor trip. Steam generators are being fed by the main feedwater system and decay heat is being removed through the steam bypass system to the main condensers. There is no primary to secondary leakage and no safety relief valves lifted. Site electrical power sources are being fed from off-site power and both units are in a normal shutdown configuration. The emergency diesel-generators are in standby/operable status and were not required during the event. Both units are stable (NOT/NOP) and in Mode 3. The…

      Great comment, red red wine.

Really worried about the flooding in PA. The ground is totally saturated in OH as I have to wear boots every time I go outside.

BTW, for all of the posters at enenews, your comments are ++++1. Great info, everyone!

      • James2

Do not worry about flooding. That is misinformation. The nuke plants can handle flooding just fine.

The flooding problem with Fukushima was a 30 foot tsunami that wiped out the cooling systems.

As long as the cooling systems are OK, the reactors are fine.

In fact – at North Anna you don’t worry about flooding – you should worry about the strength of the Lake Anna Dam. If the Dam breaks, the nuke plant melts down – there is no alternative.

        • Actually, FUKU was already irretrievably lost before the water even got there. Insufficient quake-readiness. But the tsunami would have done fine if not for the shaking.
But flooding can definitely cause major problems for any plant. The wiring issues in these plants, for starters make water a no-no, and (strangely enough) a fire often follows water at these plants. Really, lots and lots of flukey things you can think of can cause major problems… and a whole lot more flukey things that you CAN’T think of could do it too.

  • Al-Chemisto

“I feel safer here than I do driving up and down the highway,” said Michael Duffey, who handles internal communications at the [North Anna nuclear] plant, during the tour.

But of course you do, Michael. That’s where you paycheck comes from, your donuts, and you have built up quite a personal denial of what you do for a living.

    • ocifferdave

      +1 Well said.

    • James2

I’m sure that Michael is impressed with, and believes every word of the technical people who are telling him it is safe.

I’m sure also he has no clue how safe or not safe it really is – he’s a PR guy, not an engineer.

But the bigger problem is that we’ve got “group think” going on right now around the safety of these reactors.

No engineer or regulator or anyone can call N. Anna safe right now with any precision. They know for a fact that it exceeded design spec by 2x – that in itself should be enough to shut it down until it is redesigned and rebuilt – otherwise there is simply no possible way to assess safety. It is reckless to do anything else.

It’s exactly the same as when you have a prop strike in an airplane. Regardless of whether the engine still runs fine or not – it must be completely disassembled and critical parts must be replaced and it must be rebuilt before it is put back in services. This is an FAA requirement – it is the law.

The reason this law is in place is because there is simply no way to assess damage on something that has exceeded its design specification. It could visually look fine, but have a stressor somewhere that will give away at the next impact – even if it is well within the design specs.

This is something that is financially tragic, but it cannot be avoided. People must force the NRC and the utility to comply.

  • Sickputer

My prediction…North Anna will never run again. Once lawmakers understand they have a potential Fukushima 80 miles away they will request that it be mothballed in the “public interest”.

In other words…I could care less about dangerous plants elsewhere, but a dumb nuclear accident will NOT nuke the city where my paycheck and pension is cashed!!

    • James2

Actually I’m amazed that it took one look at the entire thing to understand that the one thing there is no backup at all for is the Lake Anna Dam.

I thought Nuke plants were required to have 3-4 backups for every system, and this one has none whatsoever.

To think that all anybody has had to do for 30 years to Fuku Washington DC is to pull a Timothy McVeigh truck job on that Dam is simply astounding.

I wonder how many other of our nuke plants are equally vulnerable???

Evidence says McVeigh was not a patsy, and that Arabic terrorists were also involved. Now your agenda Elenin is becoming more clear.
I did a lot of research at the time. Knew the lawyer who defended Terry Nichols. There was a mysterious train derailment around the same time caused by terrorism (portion of the track removed).

I was going to write a novel about Arab terrorism, train derailments, and proposed train shipments of nuclear waste to Yucca Mountain.

Elenin, you can promote your agenda all you want, but only a few people are ignorant enough to even listen.

FWIW, I have problems with the Timothy McVeigh saga. I fail to believe that a silver star decorated Gulf War veteran would turn on his country as McVeigh did. Plus the fact that they televised his execution, a completely gruesome act, comparable to the time that the U.S. govt. showed pics of the deceased Uday and Quesay Hussein (Saddam Hussein, President of Iraq’s sons), putting their bodies on display in Iraq, an action totally lacking in any morality or civility whatsoever, amidst the backdrop of a pre-emptive Iraq war that killed innocent civilians.

      Russia is Behind
      War in the Middle East
“ First of all, Hezbollah is not acting on its own but is directed by Syria and Iran, especially Iran. The leaders of Hezbollah are Persian speakers who take their orders from Iran (and ultimately from Soviet born Ayatollah Khomeini). The war at present waged against Israel by Hezbollah and Hamas is a proxy war fought on behalf of Syria and Iran (and ultimately on behalf of Soviet Russia). Both countries have been longtime Soviet satellites. The hardline military leaders of Hamas are based in Syria, where military directives and orders originate for Hamas operations in Gaza and elsewhere in Palestine against Israel. Iran created Hezbollah in the 1980’s.
“ Israel has been suckered into its present war with Lebanon because the Soviets wish to provoke a regional war in the Middle East and to unify and mobilize Arab rage against Israel, the USA and the West. The Soviets have been preparing for this since the 1960’s. …”

dimension of Russia’s Middle East policy came to the fore with a new escalation of the
Arab-Israeli conflict, this time in Lebanon. Russia has long played an extraneous role in
the Quartet on the Middle East, the grouping composed of the United Nations, the
European Union, the United States, and Russia. A more proactive Russia has now
emerged, however, pursuing policies which, at times, are significantly different than
those of the United States. Is Russian activity in the Middle East driven by new
dynamics, or are old superpower rivalries in the region resurfacing?…”

“Veterans Today is one of the more vile anti-Semitic sites on the internet offering material by one of the vilest anti-Semitic writers, J.B. Elenin, I’m impressed to hear that you know who is taught about what in my country. It is not at all politically incorrect to be Christian here, what brings you to that idea? Catholic and Lutheranian folks (of which I’m one – on paper, but that’s ok for me) coexist without hassle.
I’m glad to see that our nation’s relationship with the jewish people are getting better again and things are normalizing so we can all get along. Nazi Germany has done terrible things to the Jews, which of course gives us as a nation a special responsability towards them.
Please note that I’m not talking about the government of Israel here – toally different story. Frankly, I wonder how they can justify for themselves to take palestinian land and declare it theirs – but for me, that is a political issue.
And I’m not surprised to see you bringing Hitler into play, as I’m German. I don’t care if he was catholic, muslim, hindu or had no religious belief. And I don’t care if he did what he was told (though I doubt it), or if the sick ideas he turned into reality came from his own psychotic mind.

And if you wish to go on, feel free to do so. But don’t expect me to answer, please. Go on worshipping the lord, but please don’t try to tell ME what to believe. Ok?
