Deccan Herald, April 16, 2013: Fire shuts down Kalpakkam unit [...] The second unit of the Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS) at Kalpakkam, [India] about 80 km from Chennai, has shut down following a “minor” fire. The MAPS second unit, which had been generating 160 MW, suddenly tripped due to a “fault in the generator transformer” which is in turn believed to be triggered by a “minor” fire in an oil tanker outside the reactor building, official sources said when contacted over telephone on Tuesday. NY Daily News, April 16, 2013: Fire-struck reactor will take month to restart: MAPS director [...] It will take not less than one month to restart generation from Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS) second unit that tripped Monday due to fire in a transformer, a senior plant official said. [... "]If it is an outside fault, then the unit can be restarted in a month’s time. On the other hand if the fault is inside the transformer, then it may take more time to sort it out,” MAPS station director T.J.
