Natural Disasters Affect Nuclear Plants In America, Too, New York Magazine, June 26, 2011:
[...] Mississippi River floodwaters have breached some of the protection around the Fort Calhoun nuclear plant in Nebraska, and now the water has reached containment buildings and transformers. Electricity has been cut [...] and this will sound familiar—backup generators are working to cool the nuclear materials. [...]

The question now is quite obvious. How long will the fuel in the backup generator last?
Report Comment
Are the tanks bolted down as to not float away ?
Report Comment
NOW you ask.I may have trouble sleeping tonight…
Report Comment
Sleep well if ur concern is the tanks- They are on tracks that are locked in place they are not going anywhere- Now they earth underneath them that maybe a different can of worms altogether..
Report Comment
These rooms that the the backup generators and fuel tanks are in, are they watertight? It would make no sense to have backup equipment that would be similarly swamped in a flood situation if it were not secured in watertight buildings. Just asking an obvious basic question that the designers must have planned for decades ago. Is hoping that ‘yes’ is the answer to this question not a valid hope?

Tanks floated away in Japan, this year !
Report Comment
Seems a little bit hopeful that there could be a ‘yes’ answer to your question, yep. Based on what we know of the nuclear industry “safety” standards and all.

Damn, you guys!(joke) Another night of nightmares awaits. In other words, the most common contingency for a nuclear reactor that is built on a river that floods periodically is to cross your fingers, hope for the best, and to maximize the profits until TSHTF, like now. We build submarines without difficulty. We know how to sink pilings down 100 feet to keep these building from floating away. What is the problem? The profit margin, I suppose. Sickening feeling coming on now.

unburned fuel oil
06/23/2011
This condition has resulted in flooding of the burn pits in the fire training facility, with the subsequent release of the residue which includes unburned fuel oil. Any release of this water containing oil to the Missouri River is uncontrolled at this time. The[re] is no radiological contamination in this area.

Ft. Calhoun has 88 hours of fuel for back up generators according to RT. But thats not the issue when fuel can be airlifted in and placed on the roof- What is a serious issue is flooding of the Aux rooms both of which are surrounded by water now- If water hits electric the short would be cata um really bad

“Natural Disasters Affect Nuclear Plants In America, Too”
Really?! Whaddya know?
Did that take a PhD holding nuclear physicist working for the nuclear industry to figure out? Oh, no, sorry, they evidently didn’t figure it out ever – based on the placements of the nuclear plants around the world. Those NYT folk really must be smart, hey? To figure out such a headline all by themselves.

Oops.. should have been NY Mag (not NYT).

That should read Missouri River not Mississippi River. Oh well.

It sounds familiar alright: like 3 months of promising tepco cooling system efforts, later proven all for naught, and full of hot air.

Here’s the wall street view and discussion of the Calhoun Lagoon disaster, from Tyler Durden and blog:
http://www.zerohedge.com/article/2-feet-floodwaters-surge-fort-calhoun-nuclear-power-plant-after-floodwall-fails
Report Comment
Picture was taken before the aquadam ruptured.
Report Comment
That article opens with such a bunch of spin:
“We hadn’t previously discussed the situation at the Fort Calhoun, Nebraska nuclear power plant, as there was still a possibility that it was containable, and the deterioration had been largely blown out of proportion.”
Really? It had been “blown out of proportion”?
No, actually, people just added a couple of single digit numbers together (ie. predicted extra rise of flood waters in feet and remaining “room” for flood waters to rise before serious situations develop) and they realised: DAMN! THIS IS GOING TO BE BAD.
Report Comment
However, the ending is good:
“That said, we urge readers situated in the vicinity to carefully consider their relocation alternatives, and until there is further clarity on the NPP flood, to possibly shift to safer environs.”
Yes, appropriate warning indeed. Consider getting out now. Don’t consider it, in fact. JUST DO IT. That’s the saying really.
Personally, I wouldn’t want to be messing around with possibly highly radioactive floodwaters. No thanks. The rads in the air (such as here in NorCal and also to a good degree in Nebraska) are bad enough to deal with without that extra disaster.
Report Comment
And once again, here’s the article with info about the declaration of emergency on June 22nd, plus there is a link to the video where they talk about the flood waters rising “five feet or more” yet there is only “a foot or two” left to spare before serious situations develop:

“There has been an extraordinary amount of hype in regards to the possibility of a radiation release at the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant.
It has now been confirmed that as of now, there has not been a significant release of radiation.
While it is clear that the NRC and the corporate media would go to great lengths to cover up a radiation release, it appears that this particular situation has not resulted in a release of radiation into the atmosphere, at least not yet.”

You’re right about this river system.
May 5 2010
“The Jefferson-Mississippi-Missouri River system is the fourth largest river system in the world and serves transportation, industry, and recreation as the most important inland waterway in North America. Its drainage basin collects water from 41% of the contiguous United States, covering a total area of more than 1,245,000 square miles (3,224,535 square kilometers) and touching 31 U.S. states and 2 Canadian provinces in all.
The Missouri River, the longest river in the United States, the Mississippi River, the second longest river in the United States, and Jefferson River combine to form this system at a total length of 3,979 miles (6,352 km). (The Mississippi-Missouri River combined is 3,709 miles or 5,969 km).
The river system begins in Montana at the Red Rocks River, which quickly turns into the Jefferson River. The Jefferson then combines with the Madison and Gallatin Rivers at Three Forks, Montana to form the Missouri River. After winding through North Dakota and South Dakota, the Missouri River forms part of the boundary between South Dakota and Nebraska, and Nebraska and Iowa. Upon reaching Missouri state, the Missouri river joins up with the Mississippi River about 20 miles north of St. Louis. The Illinois River also joins with the Mississippi at this point.
Later, in Cairo, Illinois, the Ohio River joins the Mississippi River. This connection separates the Upper Mississippi and the Lower Mississippi, and doubles the water capacity of the Mississippi. The Arkansas River flows in to the Mississippi River north of Greenville, Mississippi. The final junction with the Mississippi River is the Red River, north of Marksville, Louisiana.”

Sky turns read where neutrino beams surface, Chinese reported this phenomena (see youtube videos) before their earthquakes.
Similar betaflare effects are seen on nuke plants, cause for the chemtrail-flights to neutralize the ionized air before it xplodes.

Notice what is said about backup generators !
In News this morning, Mon, About !
Headlines on Yahoo… Makes one feel all is well but not about the trouble Calhoun plant… Why headline a plant that had not the troubles of Calhoun plant…
["NRC chairman visits Cooper plant, is impressed with safety measures"]…
Then goes on to say…
[The chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission visited Cooper Nuclear Station near Brownville on Sunday and said despite rising floodwaters and rampant rumors, he's confident the station is safe.] ….
This plant is not the one going under water… the reader many not know….
A diversion…
[But even as the state's nuclear plants become national news,] ["The plant is very safe right now,"...]
Notice he says plants.. then refers to ‘one’ plant,.. then says SAFE !
[Jaczko said his visit to Nebraska came not because of a problem, but as a way to gather information.]
… this would lead people to believe the the problem has been resolved,….this is a swap/switch… what problem at this plant ?? None !
another diversion ?… “I’m not here doing an inspection,”
[Jaczko toured Cooper's grounds with plant officials and members of the media before spending more than an hour away from the tour learning about the inner workings of the plant.]
Notice he goes back to choice of word … “This Plant” …>
["This is a plant that is operating safely and meeting our standards."]
We all know about backups running at the Calhoun plant, look what is said here, …>
[plant officials said they've taken steps to make sure power is never lost at Cooper
We have so many redundant power supplies," Cooper licensing manager Dave Van Der Kamp said. "It's hard to imagine losing all of that."]
At the VERY BOTTOM of page in notations*…
[* A berm burst near the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station early Sunday, but government officials say the plant remains safe.]
Then goes on to say about dam and debunking rumors…>
[* See that YouTube video about a supposed crack in the Gavins Point Dam? Ruch said that's hogwash.
"It's crazy," he said. "The dam isn't cracking, it's performing as designed."]
Dispel before it takes traction ??
