[...] 300 hours of grainy video made public by the Tokyo Electric Power Company on Monday pick up where a previous batch of videos left off, on March 15, five days after the tsunami knocked out the plant’s power. By then, the plant had been rocked by two explosions and the cores of three reactors had melted down, prompting Masao Yoshida, the plant’s unflappable chief, to warn of “acute danger.”
In the early hours of March 15, Mr. Yoshida raised a new concern, this time about flames sighted deep within the building housing the No. 4 reactor, which was shut down at the time of the disaster. But the reactor building housed almost 1,500 highly radioactive spent fuel assemblies in a pool of water, and it was the second fire spotted there in less than 24 hours.
“We would go put out the flames if we could, but we don’t have the tools. We have nothing,” Mr. Yoshida pleaded with headquarters. [...]
The footage also shows that an operation to drop water from military helicopters [...] “That was just a quick misting,” said an abject voice off camera. “It didn’t hit at all.”

Corporations have no children to be concerned about to ensure the family's future, only a mandate for profits. Therein, is the source of the problem; the only thing guaranteed is the corruption of the system due to the payments promised to the conflicted people.

The bottom line should always be kept in mind. The fires got extinguished, the spent fuel pools were never in any danger, and no worker or member of the public was exposed to a dangerous radiation dose. No one ingested any hazardous quantity of radioactive material."

Here is one example of many in which Daiichi workers ingested hazardous levels:
The two original operators of the Sany concrete pump (water cannon for cooling) also known affectionately as the Big Giraffe:

SP: "Unsafe" is their medical condition and unsafe is a synonym for your term "hazardous" so your New York Times comment is a complete falsehood.

This NYT article is very strange.
It acknowledges that unit 4 was burning.
The article ends with an unsuccessful attempt to put out the fire by a helicopter.
No more details. The article just ends there.
What is going on here?
What is the purpose of this article?
I'm really tired of the games surrounding unit 4.
This article has a purpose. What is it?
I reiterate my belief that unit 4 has burned many times over.
The full truth will never be revealed because of the scope of the disaster.
That said, one wonders why old details that were long denied are being re-hashed in the mainstream media.

I also think the majority of Unit 4 spent fuel assemblies burned into congealed masses long ago. The same with any assemblies that survived expulsion at Unit 3 from the big explosion.
That doesn't mean the remaining rod chunks aren't still highly radioactive, just that they would have be completely uncovered from water to re-ignite. Perhaps that remaining amount is far less than they estimate.
In any event, I think the terrible mangled condition of the assemblies will preclude any retrieval even after the so-called Tepco target date of December next year. The rod assembly detrius are still very radioactive and the cooling pond has not been of normal cooling standards.
Add in the fact that all of the Unit ponds have received enormous air fallout deposits for nearly 21 months. In particular the two open air wrecks at Units 3 and 4.

The article can end open-ended..because the masses have been trained.. to not work things out past what has been spoon-fed to them.

Heart, What happened to xdrfox and Whoopie. They were posting almost everyday when this disaster began and now not one post. Perhaps they just grew weary of the not so cheery reality. I don't know but I miss their commentary as I'm sure they would enjoy the new folks contributing and sharing. Oh well, such is life on the WWW.

xdrfox went postal one day (night?) and got banned. Whoopie just faded from here, alas, but is still active elsewhere I think. She was working at an amazing pace – burnout is a possibility, I suppose.

"After some tweaking, Tokyo Electric issued a statement saying that a fire had been spotted at the No. 4 reactor building, and that the site personnel were attempting to put out the blaze.
“Calling the fire department counts as attempting to put out the blaze, right?” an official at headquarters said wanly.
The plant personnel were just as evasive when they finally got through to local firefighters, choosing to say nothing about high radiation readings at the plant.
“There’s no use in us telling the fire department. That’s a conversation that needs to happen at higher levels,” an official at headquarters said.
