Title: An Early Nuclear Warning: Was It for Naught?
Source: New York Times
Author: MATTHEW L. WALD
Date: January 22, 2013

The accident at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi plant in 2011 alerted the American nuclear industry and its regulators to the possibility that operators at plants with more than one reactor might have to deal with more than one meltdown at a time in a flood, earthquake or other catastrophe. [...]

But documents uncovered by a group that is critical of nuclear safety show that a high-level safety analyst at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission posed the possibility to his superiors in July 2007 [...]

The warning, which now seems prophetic, predicted “common cause failures,’’ meaning single events that disable different pieces of equipment that are supposedly independent and nearly invulnerable to failing simultaneously on their own. The risk analyst, Richard Sherry, wrote that flooding or earthquakes could disrupt both normal grid power and emergency backup power. [...]

Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, Fukushima (and many others, check Wiki) prove the technology can't be controlled.

They probably put the story in the Comics section or in the back sharing space with a Maxi-Pad advertisement…the MSM sucks!!~I don't think ANYTHING even remotely resembling responsible reporting or civic duty is behind their including anything about the issue at all!~They're reading into what people are saying about the "non"-reporting of extremely serious issues and "trying" to cover their asses for the day coming soon when somebody starts shaking out the carpet they are ALL part of seeing was swept under the rug when responsible journalism would have set it all out there while the plumes from the exploding mega-NPP was still in transit over(& in) the Pacific Ocean headed east and poised to irradiate & sicken and kill the 1st waves of victims who are or were already dealing with health issues that lowered their immunity to the attacks on their bodies from runaway radiation levels. In my opinion TPTB,the govt.'s of USA & Japan, mass media, and corporate scum complicit with the "accident" turned "High Crimes & Treason" are responsible and I'm personally moving beyond the stage of ranting or even willing to compromise at all anymore.."they" planted the seeds of thought that brought me to that next level-the one that won't see me waste time with words & searching for 1-2 paragraph, back page "mention" in newspapers, etc. when it's so apparent that the lynch mobs & Militia firing squads are LONG overdue!~(waiting for the shot heard round the world * :| ) ~**

THREE more of the special women in my family and on my wife's side diagnosed with cancer and health issues emerging in two of the youngest of my very small number of nieces & nephews in my shrinking family as more miscarriages & stillbirths, etc. than normal births of healthy babies including the loss of what would've been our 1st grandchildren and the deep painful guilt that I feel horrible to admit that it may have been for the best…I know it's wrong but I am so scared of the thought of my daughter having a deformed or sick child & already stricken with cancer and to have to suffer & add to the horror of every new days announcements of another name added to the list of those I deeply care about being struck down ahead of their time(s)-and I'm not sure about some seriously abnormal changes I've noted about my own internal health issues but taking care of my wife doesn't allow me the option of looking into anything further than I have a while back-just too much going on and now I've got more people counting on me to get them to chemotherapy,Oncology,etc.. But I've been honest when I come out here blubbering and I find a lot more to care about than I do to HATE.But I'd "HELP" anyone & everyone under almost any circumstance imaginable~but those who earn my pure, uncut HATRED "were" once able to be counted on one hand! Now I've run out of fingers, toes & should be working on making up "our own" deck of "WANTED" playing cards like the Iraq/Saddam type!(?) ~ :(

Johnny blade – I also have three nieces 2yrs, 4 and 7. All three have the same type of illnesses you mention. Their grand mother (my sister) also sick. Many of their neighbors and friends in same boat. They live in South Carolina (Columbia) and I am certain in my mind even though I do not have the power to prove it. Savannah River Site is close to their beautiful home. Thats where they make the Nuclear bombs and handle plutonium, MOX fuel, etc and many nasty toxic crap. It has leaked into the waterways, contaminated the land and surely the downwinders have breathed in the spewage from that death factory. I feel your pain. We are chasing the wrong bad guys if you ask me. The deadly byproducts of the nuclear industry both military and civilian is killing more people than all the terrorrists ever put together will. To hell with the NUCLEOCRATS!!!

The American officials in the board meeting look at each other in silence after its pointed that there is a possibility we could have more than one meltdown at a time. Far across the ocean, Japanese nuclear regulators briefly look up from their clipboards; "multiple failure?" Then one man says "no problem, we put them in code shutdown". They all laugh and continue on as usual.

This is what happens when you allow nuclear in the hands of greedy shortsighted little kids pretending to be adults. Their mothers should have taken their nuclear and armament toys away and sent them to bed without supper.

Oh, for God sake, Thomas N Scortia and Frank M. Robinson wrote a book about this in 1975!

    Prophetic, my ass…

Nothing is fail safe that is why nuclear reactors must be closed now, in the event of a failure the consequences are catastrophic.
Just say no to nuclear power please.

Direct quote from the NY Times article:

"Mr. Lochbaum (a member of the Union of Concerned Scientists) disagreed. “Had the N.R.C. acted in a timely fashion in August 2007 when Sherry nailed the issue on its head, implementation would be done by now,’’"

No it wouldn't have. The NRC does not require npps to take safety measures until they are made an issue and harped on for ages. After all, that was five years ago.

  • Palisades is another Clunker on Lake Michigan. Just like Kewaunee on the Wisconsin side, the clunker Palisades is on the Michigan side. Think if a Fukushima type release into the water occurred in this landlocked Lake….the midwest would be killed and that would probably be enough kill off the American empire.

How can we take these risks? Through greed, we have achieved action akin to insanity. The lure, the promises of power "too cheap to meter" has played out in Orwellian fashion with reality setting in above the propaganda, and Kewaunee is being shut down because it can't compete with Nat Gas and Solar.

Now the NRC is partaking in "communication with the public", to assure them how safe Palisades is….after a series of 4 pipes leaked radiation right through the wall of the pipe…not at a joint, not at a pump, not due to seismic event, just a plain old rust through….like a 1960's car with multiple holes in the radiator and engine block, and yet they want this clunker to live on.

    PS Communication = Propaganda

Drop by the NRC website and drop a comment. They are pretty good about not censoring comments that are civilly worded, even if critical.
