easy, just get a lead container, caculate how much radiation the shielding will stop. put the geiger counter in the container, measure the level, adjust for the shielding, and don't forget pack up your troubles in your old kit bag and smile, smile smile.

Anytime there is an 'over' reading, that means no radiation is there… kind of like 'error' reading.
This is why in official reports, there is very little radiation measured, but lots of 'over' readings.
In other words, everything is safe.

Maybe Yoh Kawano better hustle back to LA. At 5,350 miles away he's more likely to earn his doctorate before he croaks from DNA destruction.
The Niigata researchers live 113 miles away. Better odds than the poor little guinea pigs in Fukushima, but no sure thing they won't face health issues.
People who visit the evacuation zone and don't wear respirators are foolhardy, but it's their decision.

No face masks…? I don't get that one.
When they got the 'over' reading why didn't they reset the detector and test the same spot again?
Seems very non-academic or even not even very smart to be without a breathing apparatus, (face mask), in an unknown area.
The tests also seemed non-conclusive and not as professional as I would have anticipated from a college educated team.
I do applaud them for doing something.

Just watched the video. This in the area actually evacuated by the corrupt Japanese government and apart from the long grass and other obvious signs of no habitation, the plant life looked ok. Probably the air smelled all summery and fresh with little traffic or traditional pollution around. They laughed when it hit 30 µSv/hr 272 times Vancouver background radiation. But thats the ground with fall out on it. Doesn't mean they are breathing in that. Does it? Still I would want a mask or rather it wouldn't be me entering that area.
Shows you that with significant radio active pollution everything looks and smells ok and even learned educated people are reluctant to use proper caution like face masks. Hey educated or not we are all still human. For me still best comparison is smoking cigarettes. They say it will kill you but you smoke one and you don't die. So isn't that proof enough to smoke more? How many people died in that trap? Maybe those researchers will develop cancer later in life but for today, the face mask is uncomfortable on this fine summer day. This is human nature living in the now, blissfully unaware of the future. And nuclear capitalizes on its silent unseen poisons. Not just in Japan, but anywhere nuclear fuels elecrtic consumption.

… Could it be they were on a road with other vehicles that stir up dust. Even followed a large cargo filled, flatbed truck a ways?

Brave people, to expose themselves to radiation in efforts to record and publish the truth. The larger question should be, by now…
… How long will the news media keep downplaying and covering-up these facts? The media assisted the onset and further helped burry and dismiss trends concerning Global Climate Change and only NOW they're beginning to discuss events as a sequential advance of those trends as evidence of G.C.C. while those of us who've been paying attention saw this head on collision more than a decade ago and tried to yell for action. I fear the media will assist in a similar collision of another environmental threat of a life ending event, as we face with GCC, so shall we with nuclear.

My guess is that they all got a lethal dose within minutes after the truck passed. But what do I know. I'm just a dumptruck driver. Irrespective of your stage of education the Fuku Monster will chew you up and spit you out.

The contamination within 100 miles of Fukushima is probably as toxic as working in a uranium mine. And we know well how dangerous those mines are:
"Of the 150 Navajo uranium miners who worked at the uranium mine in Shiprock, New Mexico until 1970, 133 died of lung cancer or various forms of fibrosis by 1980."

SP: Over the next few years it will become apparent what the dangers are in Japan from long-term exposure similar to uranium miners. The results won't be pretty because it's not really a fair comparison because of so many different biological and environmental differences. Younger victims, more methods of exposure, and a wide variety of radioactive isotopes spells an accelerated health crisis occurring over years versus decades.

These are not people with experience in radiation protection or radiation surveys. They really did not know what they were doing. They appeared to have a meter which was set on the wrong setting or was not the kind of survey meter that was appropriate. The way they used the meter showed they had little experience using it. Of course they should have worn a dusk mask at least, I would have worn a respirator.
I do however thank them for their efforts. And it showed again that the dose in the area is coming from contamination on the ground. But what i want to see is someone taking gamma and beta readings right on the ground, and someone taking contamination sampling (swipes) from the ground and then testing that swipe for specific isotopes.
