Official: “Unfortunately, the fuel itself is exposed” at Fukushima — Scientist: Our tests show contamination isn’t going away… reactors are leaking out into ocean… there’s still a problem — PBS: Plume of water tainted with radiation is reaching to other side of Pacific (VIDEO)

PBS NewsHour’s ‘Return to Fukushima’, Aug 6, 2014: NewsHour science correspondent Miles O’Brien [...] has traveled to Fukushima three times and six times entered the exclusion zone, which he described as a “post-apocalyptic landscape of abandoned towns, frozen in time.” We’ve stitched his latest reports together into this documentary-length video. They include his tour of the hazardous Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant and a look at the health of marine life off the coast of Japan [...] Plus, a never-before-seen exclusive tour of Fukushima Daini, Daiichi’s sister plant, which narrowly escaped the same fate.

  • 3:30 in – Miles O’Brien, PBS: 3 of [Fukushima Daiich's] cores are now melted down, still steaming hot, their steel containment structures breached. Engineers believe some of the nuclear fuel has melted right through the steel containment vessels on to a concrete basement floor, where it is exposed to groundwater. [...] Each and every day, about 100,000 gallons of fresh groundwater seeps into the basements of the plant, where it becomes contaminated with a witch’s brew of radionuclide. [...] No one disputes the plant is steadily leaking radiation-tainted water into the sea.
  • 14:00 in – O’Brien: [Naohiro Masuda, leader of Fukushima Daiichi’s decommissioning company and head of Fukushima Daiini during 3/11] explained where the melted nuclear fuel has gone.
  • 14:05 in — Masuda: Unfortunately, the fuel itself is exposed.
  • 14:10 in — O’Brien: Melted through?
  • 14:15 in — Masuda: Melted through the pressure vessel, and coming down to this room and it goes down to the floor.
  • 17:30 in — Crystal Breier, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution: This is Fukushima water, this is from our cruise this past September. We found there’s still contamination. […] It’s been persistent, it hasn’t gone away. It’s indicating that the reactors are leaking out more cesium — and there is still a problem.
  • 18:15 in – O’Brien: The plume of water tainted with radiation from Fukushima is only now reaching the other side of the Pacific. This has prompted an online tsunami of pseudoscience, blog rumors and wild accusations [...]
  • 32:45 in – O’Brien: Of course local health officials have been following the evacuees in the Fukushima region and they say there have been more than 1,600 deaths attributed to stress. In the end, perhaps the biggest risk associated with nuclear energy might very well be the fear of nuclear energy. Thanks for watching.

  • Unless the radiation from Fukushima is part of the perfect storm killing the Pacific Ocean, and i think that it is, killing large swaths of life by promoting virulent bacterias and inhibiting immune defense along with the toxins, plastics, warming, acidity, overharvesting, and algae blooms, therefore effecting he smallest life forms quickly, and thus all the food chain in shortest order – then the direct and measurable radiation deaths will be a slow count – birth defects, thyroid, kidneys, heart, cancers… – with each generation increasing in radiation borne illnesses. It is madness to declare that since there are no clear deaths from radiation right now that would not even arise for 30, 200, 1000 years from now, that therefore there are no dangers, seems to me to be a kind of hatred and disregard for the future. Miles has yet to research low dose radiation effects or read materials by the doctors and scientists who make it their concern to study radiation and announce what the word does not want to hear, nor obviously does Miles O'Brien.

  • Sorry to post this off topic but the other forum no longer has a comment box. There is still time to comment to the NRC. Here's a link provided by Beyond Nuclear. If for no other reason than to let governance know that they are being watched by some of us, petitions can slow down bad legislation to buy time to come up with a better plan. Please consider sending in your comment if you haven't already. If you have, thanks so much!

Radio Yes I've been posting over there too yesterday and I was having a hard time getting booted I posted again in the nuclear ot forum this morning a lot of links about it to educate us on the talking points involved . There's another on the NRC site up for comment till November that I posted but I don't for the life of me know where it is here , it was written in layer language as well and it mentioned stockholders …so I was hoping someone would have read it to explain but gaza was raging too ..anyhow not to burn up the site and bandwidth I will find it and post it again now that things have calmed down .
      Be blessed

EX-SKF just announced the fact TEPCO discovered neutrons outside of Fukushima in March 13/15 2011. The lies they told are amazing. YES, it was a HYDROGEN explosion at Reactor 3,its was a Neutron BOMB type event if the neutron detection was correct. And a full meltdown of Reactor 3. So the plan is to do WHAT with the exposed fuel/corium from the leaking reactors?

Oh..and see this complements of a blog and from the blog and Davidjbailey,
    http://www.ippnw.org/pdf/mgs/psr-1-1-mccally.pdf

"4,400 and 8,800 Rads … fatally injured … remained lucid … not profoundly incapacitated … 10,400 Rads … incapacitated for hours … died at 34 hours"

Given how hard it would be to deliver even 1,000 Rads to any significant area of a "target", there is little impetus to develop them today. The historic significance, in terms of the Cold War and the 'defence of Germany' is brilliantly put in this paper from 1980 (politics and science collide and produce wonderful comments from all) https://xeper.org/maquino/nm/NeutronBomb.pdf

Tepco spent 2.6 billion to upgrade one nuclear plant to there new standards, it just dawned on me that is more money than the amount they have put aside to decommission Fukushima NP, I believe they have set aside 1.5 billion for decommissioning?
What is the logic in that.

Just announced at Fukushima-Diary, those highly radioactive 'bucky' balls are uranium and zironium from inside the Fukushima reactors..melted fuel, thrown out many miles from the explosion. And of course, lots of people probably exposed, but thats not mentioned. Is it too late now? Not that we did not suspect..so why is is this being announced now?? Curious.

Don't panic the people. Microscopic radioactive debris wafting through the air. I imagine most of it went over or in the Pacific with the winds initially blowing east. A couple days later the wind shifted and brought the plumes back over Japan. Yes, 3's explosion blew pieces of fuel around the immediate area, those you can find and pickup. Atomized to the wind for dispersal and the human filters called lungs have to deal with it. That's why cancer rates will be so high in the coming decades esp.around Japan. Thyroid disease from radioiodine can be dealt with if detected early enough. Cesium, strontium then uranium and plutonium poisonings take longer to incubate into cancers but poison in the meantime.

Can't wait to what TEPCO admits to next. Situation unstoppable? Out of control?
