BREAKING NEWS: 5.9 earthquake hits Virginia with aftershocks in Washington DC and New York, Daily Mirror, August 23, 2011:
A huge earthquake ripped through the east coast of America this afternoon, causing terrifying tremors from Washington D.C. to New York. [...]
There were also fears of a nuclear disaster of the kind seen in Japan’s Fukushima because the epicentre was just a few miles from an old nuclear power plant, the North Anna, in Richmond. [...]
It is though to have been the strongest quake to hit the Virginia area since 1897. [...]

Wierd to say the least !
But, earlier this year there was a tornado in Calif, and I had never heard of that before either.

This is epic timing… I am sure the nrc has a game plant for a cat 4 hurricane following a earthquake ? I’m not worried at all, we are in competent hands. In f’n real…

Oops. I forgot about that. Guess locusts, plague and pestilence (whatever that is) is next.

We have to make some “heroes”…lol….
Who can stand it….?

We NEVER get quakes here in the VA. It was extremely weird…just like the tornadoes earlier this year…or the bad blizzard of Winter 2010.
It does fit Global Warming predictions…
There’s no new briefings posted on the North Anna nuclear power site. I really don’t like this. I’m glad I’m not really downwind and don’t drink the water here!
When everyone in the community makes jokes about the glowing fish in Lake Anna, you have to wonder!!

Actually, nothing to do with “global warming”…it is relaterd to the movement of the magnetic poles. They are slowly switching over time, and this causes really bad weather and possibly even earthquake severity to increase.

“A huge earthquake ripped through the east coast of America this afternoon, causing terrifying tremors from Washington D.C. to New York…”
Oh, come on. That is sensationalistic fearmongering faux-reporting at its finest. A 5.9 is hardly a “huge” earthquake, and I daresay it hardly “ripped through” anything. I work on the 39th floor of an office building in Midtown Manhattan, and half my coworkers didn’t even know it happened.
I love this site, and all the information I get from it (and I send as many people here as I can), but let’s not get all Chicken Littley, now!

Dude, TRY LIVING NEXT TO NORTH ANNA WHEN THINGS ARE FALLING DOWN AND YOUR MULTI-STORIED BLDG. IS SHAKING ITS FOUNDATIONS!!!
YOU 911 WIMP!!!

As much as I appreciate your hysterical overreaction and invocation of 9/11 (how IS your tinfoil hat fitting these days?), I lived in San Francisco until 2003, so nice try, but no cigar.

With people like you Wall Street schmucks trying to take this country down and always crying about your “terror”…
I used to live in London with IRA bombs flying, and they NEVER cried—oh, EVERYTHING’S CHANGED NOW. Spare me!
(Actually, I do love NYC!) –I just get exceedingly pissed that you can be so callous and ignorant–not comprehending that this hit right next to where about 2 million people live and one of the worst-managed nuke plants in the world–North Anna, Va.

as in, DUH, it was in VIRGINIA, not Manhattan!!
sorry, we’re a little keyed up here!

Michael Bloomberg just gave a statement on CNN …NYC felt it alright.
Report Comment
Yes, we felt it (some of us did, anyway), but it was very slight. It was more of a “wait…did you feel that? It wasn’t…wait, seriously? It was?” kind of thing.
Exciting enough, though. Got the afternoon moving

Well it made the evening news here in Australia. Video of shaking with thousands of city workers moving into nearby parks, Washington monument cracked, cathedral steeples partly toppled. Cars crushed under piles of bricks and even a quick mention of multiple nuclear power plants in emergency shut down. I’d call that a fairly significant event, from under my tinfoil hat.
