Title: Near Fukushima, a Big ‘Guessing Game’ Over Radiation’s Long-Term Risks
Source: PBS NewsHour
Date: March 9, 2012
RAY SUAREZ: Sunday will mark a year since the massive earthquake and tsunami struck Japan. The pair of tragic events killed as many as 20,000 people, and led to the partial meltdown [See full meltdowns at three reactors via New York Times] of three nuclear reactors at the Fukushima plants.
[...]
MILES O’BRIEN: [...] We were traveling with scientists from the University of Tokyo, driving through abandoned cities and towns that once bustled with life, silent now, except for the menacing crescendo of our Geiger counter. It is an eerie post-apocalyptic scene.
[...]
This is the town of Okuma. We’re on Highway 6. We are about a kilometer from the Fukushima Daiichi plant, getting particularly high readings, 34 microsieverts per hour. This is an area where it is hard to imagine they will be remediating and repopulating any time soon.
The readings were 15 times what is considered permissible for radiation workers, 300 times more than the acceptable dose for average citizens. But if that standard were enforced here, it would prompt a dramatically larger evacuation. And that’s not going to happen.
So the Japan government has said the standard for radiation workers, 20 millisieverts a year, will apply to everyone for now. [...]

At 8min.7sec. into video the reporter gives the scientist Kazuo a persuasive analogy as if to lead the viewers into a less dramatic scenario.

I would love to here what Dr. Caldicott rebuttal would be to this video. A low dose for a very long time, is more of a guessing game according to the reporter. Mr. Kazuo says the target people is more than 2 million, very difficult and challenging work? The target 2 million people speaks volumes to me. Has the guy never worked a honest day in his life? He probable has never had a callus on his hands. "Persuasive suggestion".

From today:
Caldicott did not have any personal stake in taking a strong stand against nuclear technology. Such disinterested personalities are few in the 21st century, and hence this brief note to a brave doctor who took a stand in favour of universal safety. Her book is dedicated to “her children and all the children of the world.”
“As a physician, I contend that nuclear technology threatens life on our planet with extinction. All of us will be affected by radioactive contamination, unless we bring about a drastic reversal of our government's pro-nuclear policy,” she observed in the late 1970s.

I confess that I am unaccustomed to seeing someone prostitute themselves to such a degree. So obscene.

Nuclear reactors are wasting us and our planet. Must be shut down, pronto.

Well when NZ went anti-nuclear we encounters problems. A vessel was blown up in our ports by countries which we were Allied to, and two of our Prime Ministers were assassinated. The Pacific had been turned into a radioactive mess by American, British and French nuclear testing, with the effects of fallout on our population, and Islander populations were dramatic.
So much for democratically elected leaders following the majority free will of their people? So much for democracy and 'freedom'.
Anti-nuclear legislation brought us head to head with the CIA and Washington. They just kill those that they don't like, no matter what the reasons.
Now, those in America are getting fallout – for which they are Responsible for. Faulty reactor design, never fixed nor checked, and faulty politics which resulted in common sense being subverted. The Americans would rather sacrifice their own population, than admit that they were wrong, or even let slip the word defeat.

There are still a few people living in America that are truly Americans, and we will regain the Constitution, and we will eliminate nuke. So don't insult everyone who lives in America. We are not all sheeple.

@RutGho…As an Ameican who has been protesting nuclear since the late 50s when, as you correctly state, you were being irradiated by our actions, I take issue with your too broad brush. Some of us saw, took action, and have been trying ever since to eliminate this scourge from the planet.

Good comments and videos you left a hugh part of this madness unmentioned we keep supporting these corporations and governments by funding them by paying utility bill and taxes and buying stuff get off the grid do something solar or wind geothermal or gas saving auto it may seem expensive now but to save the planet it is cheap. Don’t believe any of these nuclear people they all lie to protect their jobs and the nuclear mafia they have no ethics I think the people controlling the nuclear mafia are all really insane http://enenews.com/cbs-nuclear-whistleblower-says-the-books-are-being-cooked-you-can-see-a-fukushima-happening-here-in-the-u-s-they-wired-my-car-for-firebombing-video.
