TOKYO — Japan lifted some evacuation advisories around the tsunami-devastated Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant Friday to reassure tens of thousands of residents who fled the worst atomic crisis since Chernobyl that it is safe to return home.
A 12-mile (20-kilometer) no-go zone remains in place around the plant, which was badly damaged by the March 11 tsunami that left nearly 20,000 people dead or missing across Japan’s northeast coast.
But officials said the advisories for five municipalities 12-19 miles (20-30 kilometers) away were lifted because the plant had been restored to a relatively stable condition and radiation levels were within safety standards.
Environment Minister Goshi Hosono, the government’s top nuclear crisis official, said the decision was a major step toward restoring normalcy to the region and boosting ongoing efforts to resettle the largely deserted towns.”

EPIC FAILURE of HP. Old thread but us regulars are still there.
Yes the article is CRIMINAL.

Hi Arclight. Oh yes Goshi Hosono, has a degree in law or something. Posted article on him a long time ago. How can you be Environment minister and in charge of nuclear disaster with no scientific background? Because disaster is being managed by spin not solved by science.
Goshi has a law degree. http://www.dpj.or.jp/english/member/?detail_217=1
and http://202.232.146.151/foreign/noda/meibo/daijin/hosono_e.html
What does this say about Japan when they put someone with a law degree in charge of a nuclear disaster?
Only thing I can say is God Bless and Good Luck everybody.

more from mr hosono here
“Despite a series of setbacks at Fukushima, including the revelation this week that spontaneous fission had been detected inside a reactor that was supposed to be all but extinct, Hosono is upbeat.
“We have come a long way in our efforts to control the accident,” he told AFP in an interview.
“It was the emergency workers at the plant who have contributed to it the most. We are finally seeing the goal of cold shutdown in sight. The workers’ efforts must be highly applauded.”
Hosono says the government and plant operator TEPCO (Tokyo Electric Power Company) — the villain of the piece for many in Japan — are on course to declare this phase of the recovery to be over by the end of the year.”
“”Frankly speaking, I don’t think the disaster preparations before the accident were good enough,” he said. “The power company lacked substantial preparation, and the administration had many flaws in its system.”
“I think such difficult times are now behind us,” he added.
He admits though that the sticky problem of exactly what should be done with the radioactive waste from the plant and the debris in the 20-kilometre (12-mile) exclusion zone around it is far from solved.
“Japan will have a great deal of (radioactive) waste. It is not an option for us to send it overseas and leave it there as if Japan had nothing to do with it.”
But finding somewhere at home that can take it is not going to be an easy task and one that, like many politicians, Hosono seems keen to kick into the long grass.”

Hosono is completely sold, and so is the new PM: It’s just a matter of time before he resigns over another major financial scam. I wonder how big of a pay check they got from Tepco or what they were promised from their contribution. It looks like the Japanese government has taken a decision since the PM ousting, and that is, to continue promoting nuclear energy. For that, they have adopted strategies all across the board to bring everything back to normalcy, at least in appearance. The Japanese are the kings of appearance, the champions of appearance over substance. Hosono would in a just world be tried for crimes against humanity.

I wish they would always give a reference to the height at which these measurements are made, and make dual measurements all the time. This example demonstrates that a measurement at ground level is going to be very different than a measurement at about 3 feet off of the ground. Not only are you going to pick up more gamma, but you have a shot at some beta radiation as well, given proper equipment! This example shows a reading at ground level about 26 times higher than at chest height. I guess this is stating the obvious!

And on the same day we find out that private nuclear companies were writing inspection manuals for Japan Nuclear Energy Safety Organization on how to inspect them…
“…committee to investigate whether there are any problems with its nuclear facility inspection methods following revelations that the body copied its procedures directly from drafts provided by a nuclear fuel firm.”
“Apart from that incident, the JNES has systematically carried out similar inspections on nuclear facilities before they went into operation.”

I wrote this is response to a new blogger who questioned why all the bad news, cant we have some good news to show how things are getting
better.
It is clear that things won’t be “better” until we can
extract this vampire squid called the nuclear industry from continuously
injecting us with radiation. Until we can shutdown all the nuclear plants…..rest of the article is here
