Title: Nuclear power boosters used climate change to ride to energy supremacy – The Mainichi Daily News
Source: Mainichi
Date: Jan 25, 2011
Emphasis Added

[...] The threat of climate change gained traction in the global imagination after the end of the Cold War. And as warming worries grew, nuclear power became an anti-emissions trump card in the eyes of many, fueling a reactor building spree. Another former Environment Ministry official with long experience in climate change policy told the Mainichi, “Government policy came to incorporate promotion of nuclear power. It was taboo for us to even make an issue of it.”

[...] When the government finalized its basic principles for climate change policy in March 2002, the document included a provision for “promotion of nuclear power,” and set a goal of increasing nuclear power output by 30 percent by 2010. [...]

The Environment Agency also came under direct pressure to fall in line behind nuclear power even before the rumblings around the Kyoto Protocol. Just after the 1992 U.N. Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, as the agency was undertaking revisions to laws providing capital to environmental NGOs, it was forced by the then ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) to insert provisions banning funding to groups that were opposed to nuclear power. [...]

Ryoichi Yamamoto

  • University of Tokyo professor emeritus
  • Climate change policy advisor to both the Abe and Fukuda administrations
  • Put together a 2008 report calling for the expansion of nuclear power as a vital part of global warming strategy when he was chairman of an Atomic Energy Commission panel
  • “I thought nuclear power would be a powerful tool”
  • “But it can’t be controlled when there’s an accident, so it can’t really be called a ‘technology’”
  • I’ve come to understand that there are ethical considerations with destroying the lives of local residents
  • “I regret that I could not point out those issues when I wrote the report”

Is something going on with Japanese media? Have they secured alternative advertising money? Is Mainichi on a mission? Memory says it’s not just Mainichi but that’s not real data…

Would love to see a j-media survey on numbers of nuke-critical articles! With comparisons to pre-3/11!

Is there hope for journalism in Japan?
Is there a growing sense of “it’s getting personal”? Will media be the point of the spear aimed at nuclears heart?

Fukushima radioactive gas caused an increase in outgoing longwave radiation (OLR):

“Our preliminary results show an unusual presence of hot spots on the top of the atmosphere over the radioactive leaks at FDNPP which also been conformed with abnormal change of in situ observation of radiation and atmospheric temperature near FDNPP. We interpreted this abnormal increase in OLR due to radioactive gas being released in atmosphere from the FDNPP. A physical mechanism for generating such
anomalies could be the ionization of the atmospheric boundary layer similar to the case of thermal anomalies detected before strong earthquakes (Pulinets and Ouzounov, 2011).”

    http://arxiv.org/pdf/1107.0930

“Greenhouse gases, such as methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), water vapor (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2), absorb certain wavelengths of OLR adding heat to the atmosphere, which in turn causes the atmosphere to emit more radiation. Some of this radiation is directed back towards the Earth, increasing the average temperature of the Earth’s surface. Therefore, an increase in the concentration of a greenhouse gas would contribute to global warming by increasing the amount of radiation that is absorbed and emitted by these atmospheric constituents.”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outgoing_longwave_radiation

So we have increased CO2, which absorbs OLR, which causes global warming. And we have Fukushima, which increases OLR, which is trapped by CO2, which causes global warming.

Kinda warm for wintertime this year, huh?

The above article proves the connection between nuclear and the global warming crusade.

It indicates that nuclear was a benefactor of the global warming initiative.

I’ve proposed that this was not an accident – that the nuclear industry was instrumental in creating and drivin the global warming myth.

THAT’S WHY THE GREENIES HAVEN’T SPOKEN UP YET – THEY ARE IN BED WITH THE NUKES ON GLOBAL WARMING.

I’ve studied it extensively – global warming is just as much of a scam as “nuclear safety”.

The irony is that we are really going to have global warming now. It’s caused by radiation.

Unfortunately global warming is real. It is the used of nuclear power to solve global warming that is the insidious myth.

Global warming: winners and losers in the Arctic’s ‘new normal’

“Global warming has brought a new normal to the Arctic, with warmer air and ocean temperatures, thinner and less expansive summer sea ice, and greener vegetation in coastal regions abutting the open water.
“In addition, longer periods of open water during the annual sea-ice melt season is allowing the ocean to take up more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, leading to seasonal bouts of ocean acidification in some areas.
“These broad observations, along with more-detailed looks at some 32 environmental indicators, appear in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s 2011 Arctic Report Card, released Thursday….”

    • As a passionate ‘greenie’, I would disagree with your premise that greens are in bed with pro nukers.

Although I have met a VERY few pro nuke greens, they are FAR less common on our side of the bed, than in most other political parties. Please read the platform of the Green Party in both the USA and Germany, not to mention all other countries I am aware of.. They are all ANTI NUCLEAR and pro renewable energy sources. Germany voted Green Party, and they promptly turned off all nuclear power plants. Does that sound pro nuke to you? Greenpeace is ‘green’ and they are at the forefront of pointing at the dangers of nuclear power.

Rather than blaming the Green Party for nuclear power, I would focus the rage and anger at the true source of nuclear power, which is largely the corporate funded Democrat and Republican Parties.

Small, powerless and impotent third parties are often blamed for the evils of corporations who get and keep the dualopoly strangehold on power.

Nuclear power is one of the few monopolies, which include oil, gas, and diamonds, national sports teams, among others.

All monopolies like the current dualopoly crony Capitalism system, in which they get corporate welfare/subsidies, pay no taxes, and make record profits. In addition, the public (meaning the average US taxpayer) absorbs all of the risk, pays for the insurance, plus bails out all failures and disasters created by these monopolies.

The public also suffers from their end products, which these industries also don’t pay for.

Please focus your rage on the proper target..

      Class dismissed.

I don’t have rage on the greens, however I do know that the AGW stuff was made up out of thin air, and I figured out awhile back that it was the nukes that were at least partially backing that crap.

I blame those who are willing to do something they know is not right for money.

I just want to know where the greens are on this topic? Where did they go? Why aren’t they protesting in the streets?

I figured California would have anti nuke protests in the streets every day – don’t the people there know they are getting radiated by Fukushima – don’t they know their sushi is contaminated?

        Where are they???

Greenpeace went to Japan months ago – found lots of radiation then disappeared.

Remarkable comments from another professor emeritus.

Is there something about the approaching end of life that prompts reflection upon what one has done, or not done?

Will the effort to end nuclear power find its strongest voice not with the young but among the elders of its former proponents now experiencing regret and perhaps remorse, those who were formerly “insiders”?

    I read this on ex-skf,
“Half-dried persimmons and blueberries, people don’t eat them everyday. The safety limit for those shouldn’t be 100 becquerels/kg.” A farmer from Nihonmatsu City angrily demanded the revision of the new safety standard, accusing the national government for having tightened the standard without considering the hardship suffered by the farmers in Fukushima. The farmer said, “By uniform tightening of the standard, farmers cannot grow crops, and local specialties will disappear.”
If I don’t eat poison everyday it will be ok. Where is the humanity? I understand this is terrible for these farmers but someone needs to tell them the truth or well all be eating vitamin enriched cesium.

For those of you who have patiently awaited the awakening over these many decades, you have been vindicated for having held to righteous truth. Be not pride-filled, but know that the goddess has been honored by your intent to protect her creation. Do no harm to those who’ve done wrong; such justice is in her hands. Resist poisonous pride in having won this long war. Take them by the hand and together work towards healing love. Do justice to the wisdom of the goddess… ]

This man is showing contrition for his past ignorance and deeds. Such disclosure as his (and others from within his ranks) will have a ripple effect across the entire landscape of nuclear power. These people should not only be encouraged for their honesty, but also protected!

As this story is critical, it must be shoved under the noses of MSM and every-other news venue. We must make a point of bringing it to the attention of others.

You are now witnessing what was inevitable. Hard reality is now exposing decades of hidden truth. For all its horrors, Fukushima may also bring forth something-other than death and destruction…

  • Hmmmm, someone is not listening enough to Ann Colter, who says that the more radiation you eat, drink and are exposed to, the healthier you will be.

Much of the nuclear industry has the same outlook.. Unless you are exposed to high doses that kill you, radiation has no effect. Since mass media is in bed with these folks and owned by the same companies, it does not surprise me that most people think that same way out in public… That is all they hear; a 30 second soundbite…. “radiation is good for you”.

I guess all those old 60s hippies were right after all when they used to go around saying ‘No nukes is good nukes!’

“…..and you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone’

This was before the nuclear industry cynically hopped on the bandwagon.

The professor emeritus has seen first hand the result of the worldwide effort to put the world to sleep.

And we’re all starting to wake up to a living nightmare.
