Title: More problems found at San Onofre nuclear power plant
Source: Los Angeles Times
Author: Abby Sewell
Date: April 12, 2012
Southern California Edison officials said Wednesday that they are now seeing the same unusual type of wear on steam generator tubes at both of the San Onofre nuclear plant’s reactor units.
In recent months, officials have found unexpected wear on more than 300 tubes [...]
What was even more unusual was the type of wear at Unit 3, which has now also been discovered at Unit 2. Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials said the tubes in Unit 3 were vibrating excessively and rubbing against each other. Initially, they said that the wear occurring at Unit 2 appeared to be different.
But in a statement Wednesday, Edison said it had found “additional minor tube wear” in Unit 2 of a type that is “similar to the type of wear that was seen in Unit 3, but at a very low level.” [...] San Onofre has been out of commission since Jan. 31, when a tube in Unit 3 sprung a leak, releasing a small amount of radioactive steam. [...]
The NRC has prohibited the plant from firing up again until the cause of the wear is understood. [...]
Title: Odd tube wear seen in both Onofre reactors

Date: April 12, 2012
[...] “We’ve informed the NRC that we have identified additional minor tube wear in one of the Unit 2 steam generators, and this newly identified wear is similar to the type of wear previously seen in Unit 3,” [Jennifer Manfre, spokeswoman for plant operator Southern California Edison] said.
The cause of the wear in hundreds of steam generator tubes in both reactors remains a mystery. While the more common type of tube wear seen in Unit 2 is typical throughout the life of steam generators, San Onofre’s four steam generator units — two for reach reactor — are only two years old. [...]

While the wear may be "minor", release of radioactive steam is far from minor IMO.

Here's the deal. In certain parts of Africa when they want to catch a monkey, they cut a hole in a coconut, empty it out, and put a few grains of rice inside. Then they tie the coconut to a tree…and wait. After a while, a monkey comes along and spots the coconut. He looks around checking for hunters or prying eyes. When it's safe, he picks up the coconut, looks at it, shakes it, and hears something rattling inside. As a notoriously curious animal, not unlike human beings, he reaches in-the hole is just big enough for him to squeeze his hand into-he feels the few grains of rice, and tries to grab them. Got 'em! He clenches the rice in his fist and tries to pull out his hand… and then a strange thing happens. He can't get his fist out. It's stuck! All he has to do is let go of the rice and he is free…but no way will that monkey let go.

On Arnies site, an article says the utility sounds like it wants to restart all but #2 quickly, and NRC is looking like they like that idea…
Arnie says they only tested 3 tubes in #3, and called it good, ready to go again.

The problem with shut them all down now is that these units in trouble are shut down. They still hold all the danger, and like Japan we have no idea how to remove the spent fuel for permanent safe storage. There is going to be a lifetime of danger for many generations just with the plants which are going to the end of their life expectancy. It makes sense you just build another reactor on the site, so the staff can continue to care for the waste, and the income support the process… meanwhile the risk grows greater each year — and as in japan one reactor's problem is the other reactor's nightmare. This is far beyond corporate policy, and profit and loss – this is a political problem which needs to be addressed, nationally and globally.

Hi Dodge,
I believe you are right. They needed to figure this out before they ever built these monsters.
The building of these plants, need to be stopped, and they need to figure out how to kill these monsters that they have created.

Hey to all, someone I know got a email from a doctor in the San Fran area and she say's, After seeing some of her patients for the last 2 months she has determined that a large number of her patients are showing signs of Radiation Sickness. Now this has got me really worried for 2 reasons. 1} a scare move to get clients 2} there is a problem brewing that is very bad and we are starting to see it. She said symptoms ranging from, fatigued without reason, flue like with headaches lasting a long time, dry lungs, burning cough, stomach problems, loose stool, burning acidity. Will release the doc's name if needed I think this is a very strong statement. What do you all think?
Report Comment
norbu…I think you need to know it is alright with the doctor. Is this a personal e mail or a public notice. I wouldn't put anything out before asking her; I assume you can find the doc through your friend.
Beyond that: Yes, I'd like to know, but NOT without the doctor's permission.
Report Comment
norbu, thanks for the info. Welcome, I remember your name here. The Pacific Ocean has brought the radioactive fallout to the doorstep of the west coast. This is just the beginning, in an ever increase to the catastrophic biological atrocity.
Report Comment
Wow, Norbu. This would be an amazing admission by a doctor, and the first I've heard from any U.S. doctor so far since Fuku. I think doctors have to draw a fine line of first, treating their patients so they heal, but not frightening them with speculation unless they have a good reason to suspect an illness or cause for an illness (in this case, radiation sickness.)
I'd really love to hear more details about this. Was it an M.D.? Do they have a standard practice or are they a holistic practitioner, etc.?
I have many health-related observations & experiences to report myself about friends and family along the West coast, from Seattle to San Francisco to Orange County, CA (inland from San Onofre), but I think this info probably belongs in a different thread. Perhaps "Possible Fuku-related Anomalies?"
Report Comment
Suggest you get some more info yourself and or see if the Doctor knows of other Doctors that have the same "findings"; then post what you find…
THANKS

norbu,
Any honest doctor in San Francisco should be able to say the same thing. We all know lots of people who have been sick. I wouldn't reveal the doctor's name, more harm than good.
On nuckelchen's videos it looks like there was an event at Fukushima at the beginning of March, and I believe the jet stream brought it right to San Francisco, plus we the radioactive sea spray itself.
Lots of people have had symptoms of radioactive sickness, I know people who are getting random infections, too, a 22 year old surfer with shingles and pneumonia, etc. Not good.

If there are vibrations now that were not there before then they may be running the reactor at a different different power level – higher or lower. The natural vibration frequency of the tubes has not changed unless they were replaced and the design was changed (i.e. cost reduced). We will never know for sure but I suspect the design was changed to save money and they unknowingly changed the natural frequency of the tube bundles causing vibrations. OR they are running the machine hotter – no pun intended.
Report Comment
New tubes were installed in modified "holder assemblies" and with the new reactor head they are running it at different temperatures and pressures!
All those things have changed the dynamic freq. that the unit is now operating under…
IMO, we were very lucky that we did not find out about this because of a BIG EQ which might have caused a huge number of tubes to fail at the same time; which is what I believed happened in Fukushima; massive structural metal failures which caused the water levels to fall rapidly and spread radioactive HOT water throughout the complex shorting out the electric services, even before the Tsunami struck…
