http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/forecast.html has some more detailed public information from NOAA. With regards to the X-class flare probability, "[the sunspot group] has experienced
intermediate penumbral decay" which is to say the magnetic fields which form the sunspots and cause solar flares have weakened.
Yesterday there was a 70% probability there wouldn't be X-class flare, today that probability seems to have realized. It's natural that the true probability of an event will keep rising until it either reaches 100%, or starts to drop down towards 0%. Since the forecasts are generally issued daily, we'll only get snapshots along the way. And of course the predictions aren't so perfect they can exactly tell when the 100% occurs.
NOAA does track their accuracy, with multitude of tricky plots like http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/forecast_verification/xFlare.html however it's quite a cop-out that the highest they predict is X-class flare. An X1 which would be a yawner, X10 that would be cause for some nice aurora, or X100 that could be civilization threatening event all get lobbed into one bin, so in a way their accuracy at that level is meaningless.

Even if you closed them all today their is no guarantee we could save them.

With what we have been seeing with regards to the sinkhole you really think it is wise to go there? I don't want one under my house, town or state for that matter. Just think of the problems we would face cleaning up a nuclear mess underground after an accident. The crap just starts out that much closer to the water supplies and then how would we know if there was an accident? They wouldn't even have to sweep it under the rug, it already is under the rug. I do not trust these businessmen and politicians enough to even consider this idea. They have proven their character through decades of deception, corruption and manipulation. 53north – what if money thought necessary for even small nuke plants were made available for roof-top wind generators of small businesses, apartments, and homes! Decentralized elec generation, yet hooked into a grid to cover one another's communities during break downs or low winds? I so want a shift from mega-projects – do you happen to know if any region has begun to develop along 'small is beautiful' (Schumacher) lines – or better yet, are there any nations that can serve as models!
I agree that a big flare, a prolonged G4 or G5, combined with an X2 or better, could cause enough havoc with the grids to send us into global nuclear mayhem. But I'm not seeing any prediction of one for the rest of the year. At worst, the sun is considered moderately aggitated, a G1/G2 for a couple of days. That's not enough to blow circuits, as past examples have proved with ample margins.
Fear the big ones, but there aren't any in sight yet.

So, it's good news and bad: the earth was 'flash-baked' around 12,950 BC, is the bad news, according to Dr. Paul LaViolette. The good news is that 2000 people survived, according to Dr. Marcus Feldman:
The largest measured solar flare in modern times was the 2003 event which was strong enough to effectively saturate/blind the monitoring satellites. Hence it was initially considered X23, but further data on its effects seems to indicate it was at least X45. (The scale is non-logarithmic, hence X45 is 2.25 times X20)
Despite that no calamities or ends of world happened, only minor disturbances. During that solar cycle peak several other X20+ flares occurred, again with minor disturbances. While it does have a great deal to do with how directly the flare is aimed at Earth along sun's magnetic lines, I've gotten pretty tried of media announcing doom and gloom and end of the world because of flares that aren't even X1.
The current solar cycle (that actually peaks in 2013) is much less active/powerful than the last one which generated those flares. Regardless, it's impossible to predict individual solar flares even weeks ahead, so a strong X-class flare is always possible though very unlikely. As long as X-class designation can even even be pinned on it, history indicates earthlings have little to worry. If officials announce "We've lost contact with all our sun-facing satellites, and have no idea what's coming", then it's time to worry.
(And that said, an earthwards X1 or X2 is actually possible or "predicted" at 1% chance just currently)
* At least on the Space Weather page, NOAA doesn't forecast what level of M or X class (re: your "X1 or X2"), just whether some kind of X or M level flare might be in the offering.
* The currently posted "1% chance" of an X-class flare is a curious stand-down from the 70%-M and 30%-X 48-hour forecast posted just previous –per:

Judging from the Wikipedia information he likes money and for that he needs publicity. This entails telling each audience what they want to hear. Not that this would necessarily be a bad idea from "education" standpoint, even if I tend to disagree. He could not reach the audience of Coast to Coast AM if his message were "There's nothing to worry about, nuclear is perfectly safe, just listen to the authorities" (Though by all indications this is not his position anyway, just using that for illustration).
That said, "dumb it down" is always relative… to the audience, too. For example (and I'll have to put a disclaimer I have no time to listen through every media-clip, I'm going by the ENENews quote here) there's nothing new or unseen about nuclear power plant power blackouts. They're design basis issues; each and every one nuclear plant is designed to be safely shut down and maintained even without external power. The reasons this was an issue at Fukushima include at least:
1) Mechanisms critical for cooling were damaged
2) Emergency generators were destroyed by tsunami
3) Passive cooling systems were manually shut off
4) Earthquake blocked generator delivery by ground
5) Damage to containment restricted access to site
6) Earthquake cut fresh-water supplies to the site
7) Resources (money, helicopter) were poorly allocated
8) Offers for airlifted generators were turned down
9) Initially refusing to use sea-water for cooling

Exactly, this is what I was thinking! Why is he so popular with mainstream TV stations like NBC, ABC, CNN etc? He might be clever but there are other more honest and equally clever scientists who won't be even invited by these people.

Actually, despite your claims, the Isolation condensers are only good for 8 hours and the RCIC pumps won't work without hte secondary cooling pumps running, it will melt down. the RCIC is a PR excercise, not a effective solution.

Nice response, except that I make no such "claim" as you're arguing. I'm merely pointing out that UNLESS several other things go wrong at the same time, a simple power-outage will NOT make every nuclear power plant in US start popping like Fukushima like this topic & many of the responses seem to imply.
Chicken little syndrome and all. Of course, this is not to say it's impossible for those several other things to go wrong – if anything, Fukushima is a living (and death-dealing) reminder that Mr. Murphy is still well and alive, aided by numerous stupid people and stupid decisions. But saying nuclear power plants depend on external power to not blow up and a few power cuts will lead to global nuclear mayhem? That'll be proven false again the next time a nuclear power plant loses external power – they regularly do with no ill effects.
Not to mention a solar flare strong enough to disable power to most nuclear plants would be very much civilization-threatening even in and on itself. And thinking on the bigger picture, it's clear nuclear plants aren't good with the prospect civilization ending events. It's the civil unrest and neglect that are likely to pose much larger threat than a simple power outage through, and of course the irradiated fuel will remain dangerous for millions of years.
The species would survive a Carrington, although being blasted back to the 1920's without the skills to survive would enforce natures harshest penalty on many people.
But with 430 nuke plants melting down, it would be all over, 430 Fukushimas, would really be it, and we are on borrowed time until that crap is drycasked.

I don't agree with everything everyone says in this forum, and I'm sure they all don't agree with me – But I think it's important that we listen to what each other has to say, and use that information to expand our thinking. I beleive it is important to have as much information and views as possible when we make decisions about what are of value to us. Too often we are feed only part of the story, or halve truths, and outright lies – it's up to all of us to put together all the pieces to the "truth", and to do that we to get the imput of as many people as possible. I think all of views expressed here @ Enenews help us all to think for ourselves. Sorry if this is rambling – it might not make sense, but that'll be because of the Egg Nog I hope you understand what I'm stumbling over.

I have been following this site since 3/11 and I am sorry to see how few people still check and comment on Enenews. I appreciate that Arnie and Helen and Michio etc still provide info for those of us who actually want to know.
The process by which congress and the administration continue to effectively represent the interest of their corporate patrons, to the detriment of the citizen taxpayers, is fully functional; it is the economically and organizationally marginalized citizenry who are paralyzed.
Several advocates and alternative technologies exist –including the development of rapidly deployed transformer replacement system. I understand that none of this has been properly funded or implemented, and that if we started today, the work wouldn't be completed until well after the solar cycle had peaked. Possibly, we could save the transformers and NPPs by disconnecting them in a timely fashion (which might take an executive order and a rapidly deployed military unit to enforce the order –witness recent NPPs blithely sailing into hurricane Sandy at 100% power). Without credible NOAA forecasts, however, that won't work either.
Thank you Craig-123 – I'll check the links. From your assessment, it seems to me we need to 'blitz' Washington, make noise that the White House at least assure us it has a plan, and if it does, that it tell us what it is, (i.e. more detail than "trust us".)

This discussion group should be very clear about the consequences of extended "station blackouts" due to the grid being down over wide areas –don't you agree? The diesels have to start within the 8 hours of backup battery life and run for as long as a year –right? The normal shifts of NPP work crews must be persuaded to stay at and keep returning to their posts –or trained replacements must be flown in. The diesels have to be re-supplied with fuel (which will become a job for the military as civilian responders evacuate and/or run out of fuel for their tank trucks).
Do I understand it correctly –that there is no provision to supply diesel electric power to the spent fuel pool cooling pumps at our NPPs? That the "plan" is to be standing by with fire hoses as the water boils off?

Re-reading your post, I'm not sure my connection to 'home sized' units is what you meant! But now that we're commenting on them – I've researched home-sized solar and wind off/on for awhile.
Here in US I've found interesting roof-top wind units designed, tested and marketed but still very much a small niche. Most units I've seen are on commercial roofs – warehouses, manufacturing facilities, isolated but larger farm/ranches. There's promotion for home-sized units that might be worth considering in more densely populated places. At home level here too it takes more money than I've had so I use passive solar, and assorted general practices, to reduce dependency.
I tried to find a post on cutting consumption you might have on the net, using assorted key words, but nothing yet. Do you have a link to share?

Just yesterday I was viewing a new housing development here in the UK and every property had solar panels on the roof which were all connected to the grid. I get the impression that this may be becoming the norm. The UK Government released their new Energy Bill yesterday, with price increases for every family to cover the cost of nuclear susidies, which they had promised they wouldn't do. Why do we let them get away with it?

The only time I have EVER felt it necessary to leave a group was when I was called nasty names and told off by another member; the mod did nothing and I had done little to create the situation, other than point out some clear facts that were missing from a post.

Hi Green road, I have a un-edited video from early 2000's, physicist speaking in Hawaii about the sun and the things to come. He slowed down the video on the sun and showed what it is really going on. It is not what it seems {sun}. He said then we are in for a small super nova. There is a lot of math, and a large amount of info. It also shows large ships entering the sun. We are in for a wild ride very soon.I have the original video out of the camera. It has never been copied.
From an insider in the nuclear industry, those diesel generators that all hope relies on, are NOT designed for more than a couple hours use.. They commonly break down, or do not work at all, when forced to operate at full power for more than a short time.
This is another dark underbelly of the industry.. the industry does not want people to know this.
At an active and operating nuclear power plant in California recently, the generators were disconnected for SIX MONTHS, and would not have been available for use at all, in case of an earthquake or etc.. The governor was on TV announcing this..
That does not bode well for our future, especially if a Super Solar Storm knocks out all power worldwide and the grid is then down for a year.
That means NO POWER to any nuke plant anywhere for extended periods, and NO TRANSPORT of any kind, since all computers in all vehicles will be toasted.
A storm like this could also toast all electronic circuits in all nuke plants, meaning the generators may never come on line. We believe that they have not prepared for this…
It's just a matter of time….TIC TIC TIC nothing else.
Even if all reactors in the world were decommisioned right now there would still be many years of cooling needed and these events that would require the lame as hell diesel back up plan would cause the same result…the diesels will fail as they have done in many test situations and that is what will happen not could happen…the odds are stacked way against us.

I emailed Space Weather, asking if solar forecasting is actually that wildly unpredictable, but my e-pistle bounced due to their mailbox being in a state of overflow.

http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/forecast.html has some more detailed public information from NOAA. With regards to the X-class flare probability, "[the sunspot group] has experienced
intermediate penumbral decay" which is to say the magnetic fields which form the sunspots and cause solar flares have weakened.
Yesterday there was a 70% probability there wouldn't be X-class flare, today that probability seems to have realized. It's natural that the true probability of an event will keep rising until it either reaches 100%, or starts to drop down towards 0%. Since the forecasts are generally issued daily, we'll only get snapshots along the way. And of course the predictions aren't so perfect they can exactly tell when the 100% occurs.
NOAA does track their accuracy, with multitude of tricky plots like http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/forecast_verification/xFlare.html however it's quite a cop-out that the highest they predict is X-class flare. An X1 which would be a yawner, X10 that would be cause for some nice aurora, or X100 that could be civilization threatening event all get lobbed into one bin, so in a way their accuracy at that level is meaningless.

This is a real possibility if not now some time in the future, complete loss off site power to nuclear reactors with no chance of recovery for months, years, multiple melt downs, no cooling to spent fuel pools, no generators burned out.
It takes five years to cool the pools and weeks to archive cold shut down this is a extinction level event.

It seems to be self evident that you should not create a nuclear bomb in situ that is dependent on offsite electric power to keep it from exploding. Unless of course you dont care if it explodes. With what we have been seeing with regards to the sinkhole you really think it is wise to go there? I don't want one under my house, town or state for that matter. Just think of the problems we would face cleaning up a nuclear mess underground after an accident. The crap just starts out that much closer to the water supplies and then how would we know if there was an accident? They wouldn't even have to sweep it under the rug, it already is under the rug. I do not trust these businessmen and politicians enough to even consider this idea. They have proven their character through decades of deception, corruption and manipulation. I was honestly hoping for a slow news day today, then I saw this and the sinkhole. If we shut down all the nuclear reactors in the world today, we have no 100% safe storage to encase all the spent fuel, as even casks are not fool proof, they leak, etc. See Beyond Nuclear for their take as it states the reasons. I still see December 22 on my calendar.
I agree that a big flare, a prolonged G4 or G5, combined with an X2 or better, could cause enough havoc with the grids to send us into global nuclear mayhem. But I'm not seeing any prediction of one for the rest of the year. At worst, the sun is considered moderately aggitated, a G1/G2 for a couple of days. That's not enough to blow circuits, as past examples have proved with ample margins.
Fear the big ones, but there aren't any in sight yet.

The largest measured solar flare in modern times was the 2003 event which was strong enough to effectively saturate/blind the monitoring satellites. Hence it was initially considered X23, but further data on its effects seems to indicate it was at least X45. (The scale is non-logarithmic, hence X45 is 2.25 times X20)
Despite that no calamities or ends of world happened, only minor disturbances. During that solar cycle peak several other X20+ flares occurred, again with minor disturbances. While it does have a great deal to do with how directly the flare is aimed at Earth along sun's magnetic lines, I've gotten pretty tried of media announcing doom and gloom and end of the world because of flares that aren't even X1.
The current solar cycle (that actually peaks in 2013) is much less active/powerful than the last one which generated those flares. Regardless, it's impossible to predict individual solar flares even weeks ahead, so a strong X-class flare is always possible though very unlikely. As long as X-class designation can even even be pinned on it, history indicates earthlings have little to worry. If officials announce "We've lost contact with all our sun-facing satellites, and have no idea what's coming", then it's time to worry.
(And that said, an earthwards X1 or X2 is actually possible or "predicted" at 1% chance just currently)

Judging from the Wikipedia information he likes money and for that he needs publicity. This entails telling each audience what they want to hear. Not that this would necessarily be a bad idea from "education" standpoint, even if I tend to disagree. He could not reach the audience of Coast to Coast AM if his message were "There's nothing to worry about, nuclear is perfectly safe, just listen to the authorities" (Though by all indications this is not his position anyway, just using that for illustration).
That said, "dumb it down" is always relative… to the audience, too. For example (and I'll have to put a disclaimer I have no time to listen through every media-clip, I'm going by the ENENews quote here) there's nothing new or unseen about nuclear power plant power blackouts. They're design basis issues; each and every one nuclear plant is designed to be safely shut down and maintained even without external power. The reasons this was an issue at Fukushima include at least:
1) Mechanisms critical for cooling were damaged
2) Emergency generators were destroyed by tsunami
3) Passive cooling systems were manually shut off
4) Earthquake blocked generator delivery by ground
5) Damage to containment restricted access to site
6) Earthquake cut fresh-water supplies to the site
7) Resources (money, helicopter) were poorly allocated
8) Offers for airlifted generators were turned down
9) Initially refusing to use sea-water for cooling

Actually, despite your claims, the Isolation condensers are only good for 8 hours and the RCIC pumps won't work without hte secondary cooling pumps running, it will melt down. the RCIC is a PR excercise, not a effective solution.

Nice response, except that I make no such "claim" as you're arguing. I'm merely pointing out that UNLESS several other things go wrong at the same time, a simple power-outage will NOT make every nuclear power plant in US start popping like Fukushima like this topic & many of the responses seem to imply.
Chicken little syndrome and all. Of course, this is not to say it's impossible for those several other things to go wrong – if anything, Fukushima is a living (and death-dealing) reminder that Mr. Murphy is still well and alive, aided by numerous stupid people and stupid decisions. But saying nuclear power plants depend on external power to not blow up and a few power cuts will lead to global nuclear mayhem? That'll be proven false again the next time a nuclear power plant loses external power – they regularly do with no ill effects.
Not to mention a solar flare strong enough to disable power to most nuclear plants would be very much civilization-threatening even in and on itself. And thinking on the bigger picture, it's clear nuclear plants aren't good with the prospect civilization ending events. It's the civil unrest and neglect that are likely to pose much larger threat than a simple power outage through, and of course the irradiated fuel will remain dangerous for millions of years.

To all who are criticizing Michio. I have been an anti-nuclear activist for many decades, beginning in the 1950s. I knew Michio Kaku in the 1980s when U.S. activists were busy opposing Reagan's push for nukes and for Star Wars. I participated in The Mobilization for Survival, Sane/Freeze, Physicians for Social Responsibility and other groups.

I don't agree with everything everyone says in this forum, and I'm sure they all don't agree with me – But I think it's important that we listen to what each other has to say, and use that information to expand our thinking. I beleive it is important to have as much information and views as possible when we make decisions about what are of value to us. Too often we are feed only part of the story, or halve truths, and outright lies – it's up to all of us to put together all the pieces to the "truth", and to do that we to get the imput of as many people as possible. Several advocates and alternative technologies exist –including the development of rapidly deployed transformer replacement system. I understand that none of this has been properly funded or implemented, and that if we started today, the work wouldn't be completed until well after the solar cycle had peaked. Possibly, we could save the transformers and NPPs by disconnecting them in a timely fashion (which might take an executive order and a rapidly deployed military unit to enforce the order –witness recent NPPs blithely sailing into hurricane Sandy at 100% power). Without credible NOAA forecasts, however, that won't work either.

Thank you Craig-123 – I'll check the links. From your assessment, it seems to me we need to 'blitz' Washington, make noise that the White House at least assure us it has a plan, and if it does, that it tell us what it is, (i.e. more detail than "trust us".)
And if it doesn't have a plan, we need to press that one be devised ASAP.
When I read Path2009's thoughts I visualized deploying all available large pile drivers to high voltage lines and sites – thinking these could pound large 'grounding rods' into the earth in short order! (Such is the homesteader's imagination!)

This discussion group should be very clear about the consequences of extended "station blackouts" due to the grid being down over wide areas –don't you agree? The diesels have to start within the 8 hours of backup battery life and run for as long as a year –right? The normal shifts of NPP work crews must be persuaded to stay at and keep returning to their posts –or trained replacements must be flown in. The diesels have to be re-supplied with fuel (which will become a job for the military as civilian responders evacuate and/or run out of fuel for their tank trucks).
Do I understand it correctly –that there is no provision to supply diesel electric power to the spent fuel pool cooling pumps at our NPPs? That the "plan" is to be standing by with fire hoses as the water boils off?

Correction: I believe a "blackout" occurs when backup power also fails, so I'm talking about an extended off-site power failures.

I'm over here in the UK – we had/have solar rolling out on a rich peoples houses basis; and small wind turbines at the local Do-It-Alls, but it's not taken off.

Re-reading your post, I'm not sure my connection to 'home sized' units is what you meant! But now that we're commenting on them – I've researched home-sized solar and wind off/on for awhile.
Here in US I've found interesting roof-top wind units designed, tested and marketed but still very much a small niche. Most units I've seen are on commercial roofs – warehouses, manufacturing facilities, isolated but larger farm/ranches. There's promotion for home-sized units that might be worth considering in more densely populated places. At home level here too it takes more money than I've had so I use passive solar, and assorted general practices, to reduce dependency.
I tried to find a post on cutting consumption you might have on the net, using assorted key words, but nothing yet. Do you have a link to share?

Just yesterday I was viewing a new housing development here in the UK and every property had solar panels on the roof which were all connected to the grid. I get the impression that this may be becoming the norm. The UK Government released their new Energy Bill yesterday, with price increases for every family to cover the cost of nuclear susidies, which they had promised they wouldn't do. Why do we let them get away with it?

I'm a member, but a serious lurker (reader) here. I am sorry when someone leaves a group due to a differing opinion. The only time I have EVER felt it necessary to leave a group was when I was called nasty names and told off by another member; the mod did nothing and I had done little to create the situation, other than point out some clear facts that were missing from a post.
We are not far sighted with our grid safety or the fact that we even HAVE nuclear plants. I am older and since they first went online, my big question was…what do we do with the spent rods? I still have that question. No..they are not safe at all.
Greed has been, and will be the driving force of everything that will bring our civilization to its knees. Because we could prepare. We could so something. I find it appalling that the people in power care so little for future generations, including their own.

Hi Green road, I have a un-edited video from early 2000's, physicist speaking in Hawaii about the sun and the things to come. He slowed down the video on the sun and showed what it is really going on. It is not what it seems {sun}. He said then we are in for a small super nova. There is a lot of math, and a large amount of info. It also shows large ships entering the sun. We are in for a wild ride very soon.I have the original video out of the camera. It has never been copied.

From an insider in the nuclear industry, those diesel generators that all hope relies on, are NOT designed for more than a couple hours use.. They commonly break down, or do not work at all, when forced to operate at full power for more than a short time.
This is another dark underbelly of the industry.. the industry does not want people to know this.
At an active and operating nuclear power plant in California recently, the generators were disconnected for SIX MONTHS, and would not have been available for use at all, in case of an earthquake or etc.. The governor was on TV announcing this..
That does not bode well for our future, especially if a Super Solar Storm knocks out all power worldwide and the grid is then down for a year.
That means NO POWER to any nuke plant anywhere for extended periods, and NO TRANSPORT of any kind, since all computers in all vehicles will be toasted.
A storm like this could also toast all electronic circuits in all nuke plants, meaning the generators may never come on line. We believe that they have not prepared for this…

It's just a matter of time….TIC TIC TIC nothing else.
Even if all reactors in the world were decommisioned right now there would still be many years of cooling needed and these events that would require the lame as hell diesel back up plan would cause the same result…the diesels will fail as they have done in many test situations and that is what will happen not could happen…the odds are stacked way against us.
We all know this…no surprise when it happens….
I wonder how people can be surprised that the Pacific is dying when they did everything to arrange it???
