June 7, 2012 report by Mitsuyuki Ota of the Great East Japan Earthquake Relief Network in West-Chiba translated by Dissensus Japan:

[...]

Dr. Shunich Yamashita,  vice-president of Fukushima Medical University has ruled health damage surveys in Fukushima since the accident occurred. According to the result of thyroid testing of children that prefecture Fukushima published in April, morbidity of cyst is 35%.

[...]

Dr. Yamashita conducted researches of child thyroid in Nagasaki and Chernobyl before. The results are compiled along with the other study results in the opinion document by Michiyuki Matsuzaki (one of the complainant of Fukushima mass evacuation Tribunal), according to which, both in Nagasaki and Chernobyl the morbidity of cyst was less than 1%. This emphasizes the particular figure in Fukushima. However, Dr. Yamashita is reluctant to push hard to publish data.

[...]

Dr. Yamashita advised the members of Japan Thyroid Institute not to do additional research on small nodes or cysts on January 16, 2012. Also, he told the member of Japanese Society of Nuclear Medicine that prevention of child thyroid by iodine preparation was not necessary on March 24 last year, immediately after the accident, which was a response to the advice that the society issued on 18th.

[...]

Dr. Yamashita’s survey seems to aim not at preventing health damage but at gathering guinea pigs. If this goes on, we will be killed by him eventually.

What is required in Fukushima now is to force Dr. Yamashita resign as curator of health damage survey. The other radiation-contaminated prefectures such as Chiba should also start a serious health damage survey as soon as possible.

DR Yamashitzo’s group was re-named in 2005. Here’s the beginning of the Wiki article, which indicates it is a govt/private research institute that’s also involved in promoting nuclear power, and also has connections to Western megacorporations:

“The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (日本原子力研究開発機構 Nihon genshiryoku kenkyū kaihatsu kikō?, JAEA) was formed October 1, 2005 by a merger of two previous semi-governmental organizations. While it inherited the activities of both PNC and JAERI, it also inherited the nickname of JAERI, “Genken” 原研, an abbreviated word for “nuclear research”.

On April 10, 2007, JAEA officially joined the GNEP alliance.[1] The other members in the alliance are Areva, Washington Group International and BWX. It is expected that the experience gained from the Rokkasho centrifuge enrichment plant will be a key contribution from JAEA.”

Look a little further, and Wiki provides some information about GNEP:

“The International Framework for Nuclear Energy Cooperation, formerly the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership’ (GNEP) began as a U.S. proposal, announced by United States Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman on February 6, 2006, to form an international partnership to promote the use of nuclear power and close the nuclear fuel cycle in a way that reduces nuclear waste and the risk of nuclear proliferation.[1] This proposal would divide the world into “fuel supplier nations,” which supply enriched uranium fuel and take back spent fuel, and “user nations,” which operate nuclear power plants.[2]

GNEP has since evolved into an international partnership with 25 partner countries, 28 observer and candidate partner countries, and three international organization observers.[3] The international organization observers are: the International Atomic Energy Agency, the Generation IV International Forum, and the European Commission. GNEP operates by consensus among its partners based on an agreed GNEP Statement of Principles.[4]”

Wow…this puts a new spin on the recent longterm death estimates in Japan. Radiation morbidity in laymen's terms means a diseased or unhealthy thyroid gland.

Death rates from thyroid disease are low, but for these early diagnostic results in Japan to be 35 times worse than Chernobyl bodes ill for other radiation-induced illnesses.

BTW…Dr. Yamashita is the infamous "Think happy thoughts and you won't get sick".

    Madness in Japan…

Death rates from thyroid disease are low, only pre-3/11 when that might be the only problem. After 3/11, we will experience multiple problems at the same time, due to multiple methods of exposure – breathing, swallowing, skin, etc. And that's assuming access to good oncological medical care. That's the Great Question going forward. Some will, most won't.

35 times worse is just scratching the surface, and it starts with the kids first.

Madness is absolutely correct. Madness in those that gave us this new 'Rad Plague'.

Thyroid disease — also means difficulty in controlling weight, energy, skin condition, digestion –and also means problems with fertility. Without medication, a condition called cretinism occurs–the brain fails to operate correctly, the tongue thickens and broadens, and fingers become spatulate. Long term–without any thyroid hormone–can be fatal.

AND if cancer, it comes back — or can come back. So life long care and observation required – plus daily medications. Skip a day or so, hormone levels get messed up, you get tired and sick…So patients need blood tests every few months (6 weeks) for thyroid levels and dangerous cells in the blood, oncology doctor care and observation, medication, yearly testing for cancer growth (at least), radiation/chemo (my daughter has it every three years), and more. There is a high probably of bladder cancer/leukemia later in life. So all the issues above, as well as cancer coming back/spreading. Anyone who has seen someone dying of throat or lung cancer knows how terrible the death can be.

Those 35% of children, what a terrible legacy and knowledge by parents maybe they could have taken steps to protect them. But THANKS to the Japanese government, they were told not to "worry." Who will provide care for all the sickening children–and adults..?? Who will be available in the families to help the ill if everyone is sick?

@many moons – i'm trying to figure out where that is… mmm.. Antarctica .. the moon – well, actually the moon is no good, astronauts have to face that they will be exposed to four times the 'approved' annual radiation dose of a terrestrial nuke worker.

seriously, i think Antarctica is about it. so long as the ozone holds out.

and yes, TIS, "thinking of the rich flying to 'name country here' with their mercenaries" was one thing on my mind. I can just see that working real well. Not.

"What is required in Fukushima now is to force Dr. Yamashita resign as curator of health damage survey" – this is what really needs to happen. Dr 'Smiley' Yamashita is an example of corruption and beligerence at the highest level.

These so called 'authorities' need to be taught some lessons about the fact they are here to serve the people, not serve the mobsters and banksters that are destroying our world and it's people.

Just oust Yamashita. These are pressing times, don't listen to him, get rid of him and put in a person that respresenents the people, not nukers.

This world is hopelessly lost to the nukers. We are f…. unless we stop them. I can't tell you how to stop them, I'll leave that to your intuition. (hint, praying will not achieve a thing, we are dealing with a mindset that is beyond reach of prayers).

(As for the politics that has only just recently arisen, I'd ask that you let it go for now, because I really believe there has been little of it here, you just happen to have stepped in on a 'bad' day ;) )

i'm here to stand beside you and work with you. you're right, the cause is no nukes.. let's get on with it.

Right wing, left wing….none of that matters. It's about this massive corporation that is making their profit the bottom line.

I've posted in support of seriously oppressive socialist regimes. Trust me, I'm no fan of the USSR. The strangest thing is…it seems the USSR has been the only regime on the planet capable of dealing with it.

Simply because they had no restrictions on who they ordered to their death.

It matters. Just not right now.

one of the nice things about this place is that in the midst of all the horror of terrifying new facts we must daily struggle to acclimate, the majority can still keep a sense of humor.

"May I call you dingdong?" i really "L'd" OL on that one.

And, "I can let go with the best of them"…maybe not George Carlin grade but late at night, trying to process the doom and gloom…ANY small reason to smile is like an unexpected gift.

So Sham, or maybe Shama would be better, as one who has been guilty of veering into what some consider irrelevant politics (not so much health care/taxes/elections as what ism is better suited to help fix things than what other ism) let me assure you and the rest, I will try sticking to the main point.

  • In a Democracy Now interview on June 3rd Aileen Mioko Smith, executive director of Green Action, described comments made by Dr. Shunichi Yamashita, the appointed radiological health safety risk management adviser for the Fukushima prefecture:

[Aileen Mioko Smith]: Yes, we’re very concerned that a health study is starting at the end of this month. This is concerning the effects of the Fukushima residents, on the prefectural citizens. It’s headed by a Dr. Shunichi Yamashita, who’s at the Atomic Bomb Research Institute… He’s widely shown on national TV. He speaks widely in the prefecture, always saying there’s absolutely no concern with the levels of radiation in Fukushima. He says that mothers, even mothers exposed to 100 millisieverts, pregnant mothers, will not have any effect, health effect.

Remember the number 100. Compared to that, the Soviet Union required a mandatory evacuation during Chernobyl at five millisieverts. This doctor is quoted as saying, "The effects of radiation do not come to people that are happy and laughing. They come to people that are weak-spirited, that brood and fret." This is a direct quote. And he’s heading the study. And so, the citizens in Fukushima are very concerned.

    Report Comment

    • In a subsequent interview with Der Spiegel, Dr. Yamashita was pressed to explain his assertion that no effects from radiation occur when people are happy. He responded by claiming that there exists little statistically significant increased rates of cancer for exposure levels under 100 millisieverts.

It is instructive to compare this level of 100 millisieverts represented as safe by Dr. Yamashita for pregnant women with the 5 millisieverts a year level of exposure used by the Soviets after Chernobyl to dictate evacuation of citizens.
