Graphed data created based on reports from [...] http://radioactivity.mext.go.jp/ja/monitoring_by_prefecture/

All MEXT monitoring stations in and around the greater Tokyo area showed significant spikes in radiation. This includes Tokyo (Shinjuku), Saitama, Kanagawa, Chiba, and Ibaraki.

Yesterday’s M5.1 quake in Fukushima occurred at 8:45p, about 30 minutes after a M4.5 hit nearby. The charts at the bottom give a more precise idea of the timing of the radiation spikes measured throughout the Tokyo area.

Note that the measuring device in Tokyo is at 18 m height (7 m / 4,5 m at other stations).
Makes you wonder how high ground levels are….
    The effect is immense!
Rmemeber Tepco saying releases were rising at fuku yesterday due to “stirring up dust during the works?”
Seems like lots of “dust” were stirred up all over the country.

    Not good at all.

Hey BandB, some of the spots are quite high in the air … though we kind of knew that before about their measuring locations. Hopefully the relative radiation increase will be focused upon.

In several locations around the Tokyo area radiation doses spiked to the highest levels seen in months — up to 200% normal — at nearly the same time as the quake occurred.

Any thoughts on what caused the spike?
Anyone come across additional data indicating a spike?
How about reports of issues by Tepco?
What about measurements of specific isotopes?

Hi Admin, I know that WE know about the stations’ locations…just wanted to point it out to readers who are new or not familiar with the atmc.jp site.
Just to avoid people saying “oooohhh, that’s nothing, it’s like our background levels”.
Our background levels are not measured at 18 meters above ground.

        *no offense, tomb, just saying

Nice, I like your statement ‘to avoid people saying “oooohhh, that’s nothing, it’s like our background levels”’

Exactly. The above report has nothing to do with normal background levels. It has everything to do with the several hour long INCREASE over normal background levels.

My comment is gone. Strange. I’ll try again.

I find it intertesting that even the current spike is below the standard “background/natural” radiation in Germany. What do I get wrong?

Like B&B sums it up, “The EQ caused levels to spike far away from the source….and not at all places the levels have gone down yet again.” Does anyone here know how this works? Why it would happen?

Hi pacific, I didn’t check the wind pattern for the time after the quake….if you like, here’s a good one with adjustable date / time.

To me, this just shows again our helplessness. We don’t know what happens, we don’t know how it spreads, we just brought these toxic substances into the world and now find ourselves at the mercy of earthquakes not happening and wind blowing in the “right” direction (whatever that may be). :-(

Great comments. Added the wind maps from time of the quake. It was blowing from Fukushima to Kanto as expected. A circulating weather pattern over Gunma and Tochigi may have helped keep dose rates lower in those areas.

Our gracious host typed these pixels of light:
“Any thoughts on what caused the spike?”

SP: Several things come to mind:

Earthquakes are cracking pipes of the filtering system which is in itself an accident waiting to happen. The hodgepodge of their plastic short term remedy will likely not survive the brutal Japanese winter, much less continued earthquake activity (which may be corium-induced from anecdotal accounts of Fukushima native citizens nearby the plant).

Earthquakes are cracking containment buildings (damaged as they are it won’t require another rare 9.0 to destroy the plant… a 6 to 7 quake may prove the final straw that breaks the back of Daiichi.

Eathquakes are cracking the repairs and opening up seams in makeshift concrete repairs/coverings. The coverup by camera operators of the repair efforts at Units 3, 4 and Common Fuel Pond building means things are not going well in the area that Arnie said would require an evacuation of Tokyo if the fuel rods at Unit 4 collapsed. Perhaps some of the rods at 4 already have spilled to the ground ir maybe they are still hanging, but on fire. Either way… the truth would nice to know for all of the world instead of trying to save face for the nuclear industry and the Japanese government.

Another possible source for the surge in Tokyo radiation spikes could be the earthquakes are splitting the substrata of the soil and opening up major fissures. Fissures facilitate escape routes into the atmosphere for the tons of molten nuclear fuel underneath units 1, 2, and 3.

The plant grounds at this nuclear megaplex is undoubtedly a serious if not deadly health risk for anyone working at the plant. The vapors dispersing into the wind re

Radiation can also be coming from Tokai II NPP and J-PARC and MOX processing plant at Tokai-mura and from other experimental reactors at Tokai-mura. Japan is alive with nuclear experiments and nuclear accidents.

“Japan is alive with nuclear experiments and nuclear accidents.”

And all-too-soon will be dead from nuclear experiments and nuclear accidents. Tepco and the Japanese government have committed tragicly criminal acts against the people of Japan, and should be dealth with as criminals of the most heinous kind.

The people of Japan have a long tradition of being stoically resigned to loyal subservience to their leadership. This must stop! It is clear that their “leadership” is leading them to extermination.

To the people of Japan: You must demand truth and compensation from your government. How? You must quit being sheeple and start demonstrating. A good start would be to have an epidemic of “blue flu” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_flu). This will begin to hit them where it hurts. Shut down the economy for a day, a week, a month… whatever it takes.

Civil disobedience, though anathema to your culture, must be learned, if not for yourselves, then for your children! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_disobedience). You need to find strong, charismatic leadership at the grass-roots level, and become strong and committed to preserving life. You must learn to rely on each other, not on “big brother.”

Please take action, now. By doing this, you will not only help yourselves, but you will also help your international brothers and sisters. A mass demonstration and/or work-stoppage would quickly garner the attention of international media. They would no longer be able to ignore the tragedy being perpetrated on the Japanese citizens. They will no longer be able to ignore the fact that this is not just the radioactive contamination of Japan, but of the planet.

I apologize if this sounds harsh, but for the sake of your country, your planet, and your people, you must take a stand, and call a spade a spade! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Call_a_spade_a_spade)

The radiation spikes are probably from the underground coriums… re-criticalities as the molten fuel changes shape from the shaking. I would guess it is iodine, krypton & xenon.

But the New Years quake was from the #4 fuel pool and cesium…

the radiation level in Unit 2 Dry Well jumped from a relative 3 month long steady-state of 1.5 to 2 Sv/hr up to 8.9 Sv/hr on Jan 22.
    http://atmc.jp/plant/rad/?n=2

seems like something has happened there, possibly increasing the amount of leakage too. combining that with the wind, it correlates with a rise in Tokyo a couple of days later.

Any idea on when these measurements are taken? First thing in the morning?

Around or after, January 17th, all the measurements appear to begin to rise slightly or at least 1 to 2 days thereafter. Days before supposed earthquake, it was rising. Ruling that out. Between 1/18 and 1/19, all except Ibraki, Fortunately, most appear to have already crested as 1/24, except the southern most points listed. Kangawa and Chiba, Chiba looking like it is beginning to reverse trend on 1/24. Suggesting the plume has passed.

They drilled into the Primary Containment vessel and reported it complete on 1/17. I feel like this created the excess radiation. Whatever the source is, its certainly open for debate.

      http://atmc.jp/plant/rad/?n=2
This indicates Reactor 2, radiation in the Suppression Chamber/Torus, began increasing on 1/17, significantly on 1/22.

Any word on Tepco increasing the water rate on Reactor 2, after they realized water levels were lower than believed?

Defective meter is listed. Is this evidence, that massively radioactive steam raised up from underneath it? Possibly. Following Days after, we see an increase across Japan

First listing, we see Tokyo crested 1/23. After Tokyo, its Kanagawa, showing a high spike on 1/24. Consult your wind map provided. It shows that Kanagawa is due south from Tokyo.

Next we have Saitama Saitama, North-East of tokyo showing a spike corresponding to 1/23.

Next we have Chiba, Which is due south of Ibraki, Ibraki had a spike on 1/23, Chiba, you guessed it the day after, 1/24 .

We have no time stamp of measurements or hour by hour reports, that could confirm my suspicions.

The slight increase, then spike indictates that their was a plume traveling south from Fukushima, originating roughly a week or so before. The source of this radiation, open for debate but reasons above, lead me to believe its not from the earthquake.

I made copies of the pics of graghs from the Yokosuka radiation monitoring stations around the us navy base. They show what time it spiked in yokosuka (kanagawa). but I don”t know how to paste the pics from my computer to here. It started spiking between 8 and 11pm on the 23rd Japan time. I believe the EQ hit at 8:45. Here is the link anyway http://www.kankyo-hoshano.go.jp/real-data/servlet/makeChart?areacode=1&kyokucode=2&charttime=72
It is in real time so check it out soon. This is the graph for the station 2 monitor. The top graph is for air and the bottom is for ocean water. You can look at the past 6 hours, 24hrs and 72 hours by clicking on the tabs at the top. If you click on the button at the bottom it will take you to the map of the 10. stations.

Is there some way we can get the people who know the facts to come forward and tell them? Is there anyone willing to tell the truth? Why isn’t there a daily report from ground zero at the plant? With all the sophisticated monitoring equipment worldwide on 24/7 – why isn’t any of it getting out? When will it come out? What will it take to get this information? If there are people willing to sacrifice their lives to clean up the mess, why aren’t there people willing to sacrifice their lives to tell the truth? Truth Out! I encourage anyone with the information to come forward as a heroic act and tell the world the truth.

It seems that when there is an Earthquake the radiation levels increase, wondering if the water sloshes around the molten core and causes more steam somehow , or some kind of process like that …

If you guys go over to POTR, I think he has a diagram on what goes on with the corium when it hits groundwater, which is what is causing these series of earthquakes/underground explosions.

The corium, at least chunks of it, are hitting the groundwater, creating mini-recriticalities, which forces the isotopic steam/witche’s brew back to the surface through the cracks in the substrata. This fast-moving steam just got blown all over Japan yesterday by the southern prevailing winds.

Ground level measurements must be mind spinning!
