Kevin Kamps on The Fukushima China Syndrome, Thom Hartmann Program, Dec. 5, 2011:
Thom Hartmann talks with Kevin Kamps, Beyond Nuclear: www.beyondnuclear.org about concerns of a major environmental catastrophe at Japan’s damaged nuclear power reactor.
At 3:30 in
The architect of Unit 3 at Fukushima Daiichi — a former President of Saga University, so impeccable academic credentials — has said it is just a matter of time before the molten core at least in Unit 1, if not also Units 2 and 3, does reach groundwater.
And then if it just hits it right and if theres enough water and enough molten core you’re going to have a pretty powerful steam explosion
so yet more catastrophic radiaoctivity releases in a great big hurry.

More notes from interview:
—–> Unit 1 melt-through – only 1.5 feet of concrete left before the final layer of steel and then on to penetration of the earth which is the definition of the China Syndrome.
—–> Chronic flow into the ocean – even water decontamination system has leaked tens of tons of radioactively water into the ocean.
—–> With Chernobyl, they brought in hundreds of miners from Siberia and drilled a tunnel under the reactor building and poured liquid nitrogen to freeze the ground and ground water to prevent the molten core from going deeper.

i think there is something wrong in the reporting of the fukushima desaster..
imagine an about 150 tons (the core plus all the concrete and steel around it),about 3500-4000° c upheated thing that it was after explosion of the rpv in march…
no known material can stand this withour melting.and now we have nearly 8 months later…
something isn’t right in the reporting.
such a melted core needs NO 8 MONTHS to melt through all barricades and then into the earth.
Report Comment
fredlvie,
I’ve been thinking that for months. Something definitely doesn’t add up.
Report Comment
I totally agree fredlvie! Melt-through of a reactor vessel may take from few tens of minutes to several hours. During the interaction between corium and concrete, very high temperatures can be achieved. The decomposition temperature of concrete is about 1100 °C. The corium can reach temps of 2800 °C (some scientists and researchers suggest the possibility of much higher temps 4000+). At this temp decomposition of concrete can reach 1m an hour. The possibility of total melt through in hours and days, not weeks or months seems likely!
My theory is that the first explosions and fires were caused from the coriums hitting ground water in the following hours and days after the quake. Could this be possible? What do you guys think?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corium_(nuclear_reactor)
My reason for investigating this was the lack of foreign or Japanese assets to stop it from getting worse! I am totally convinced the worst happened almost straight away and there was no way to stop it once coriums left the buildings? How many times has it been reported about contaminated sewage? Rivers have been reported to be extremely contaminated! This is why TEPCO can dump contaminated water into the sea. Outside the plant when close to the sea they have reported extreme counter readings. The nuclear industry has been telling us for years that China syndrome could never happen…”its impossible with western designed reactors”.
Time to wake up my friends, these people need to be held responsible! Peace.

Solid masses of concrete may take a while to burn through, the steel I feel will melt like butter, and the earth soil below as it burn through will be fast as it’s pure weight and heat will allow an easy speedy descent !
Perhaps it won’t be long now, Jack is about to spring from the box !
Report Comment
At work the other day they were cutting lumps of steel (about 150mm x 150mm x 100mm) with an oxy torch. It was in concrete and I was really surprised at how long it took to start melting the steel. What I found more surprising was the fact that once it started melting it just started flowing really fast! It also left hollows in the concrete where the steel flowed. This observation was the defining moment in my belief that the worst case scenario was almost instant with no time to react. I am not saying its all over and its getting better, I’m saying worst has happened and contamination will only get worse

In the long term, maybe a little good could come of a steam explosion (assuming we survive). What better event to convince those who are still pushing for more reactors, and continued operation of aged existing reactors?

I never heard the Russian miners and nitrogen story anywhere about Chernobyl, incredible that Russia took more steps than Japan has to prevent a worse catastrophic release. I’m feeling a strong urge to flee the west coast to maybe Brazil?

Southern Brazil has 2 reactors and a third on the way. They have been constructed on the most beautiful seaside area. The first reactor was constructed over a period of 10 years and from various companies the second is more recent but they have many unscheduled events!
The recently elected Dilma has promised to close them and there is an active green party trying to close them as well.

Howdy hey!
“And then if it just hits it right and if theres enough water and enough molten core you’re going to have a pretty powerful steam explosion so yet more catastrophic radiaoctivity releases in a great big hurry.”
So, what we have been saying here since how long?
All we can do is watch this closely. There on the ground they will know when it is getting close. Unfortunately, we all will not know until it pop-goes-the-weasel and spews out in a maybe not as violent way as the large hydrogen explosion, but it will put out lots and lots of greater than it is already amounts of radioactive poisonous contamination that WILL hit the jet stream.
We all must remain vigilant and watch this closely. Please check in with your weather and counter readings on the permanent Radiation Monitoring thread.
When it does react or goes off, we will then have to all get together and do the team-enenews analyzations to guesstimate when it will hit us using the models we have developed around how many days it takes to get here, and where it is in the jet stream at the time it waves over our locations planet wide. Check out how our Good Sister ichicax4 here is applying the team-enenews science.:
We will all have to duck and hide WHEN it does that and what is not being discussed is, IF this does start a phreatic expulsion of “steam” that is radioactive and does not stop, are YOU prepared to retreat and take cover for an undetermined amount of time?
Please then, keep preparing for the worst, and hope and pray for the best. Live in the fullness of every day wrapped in self-created quality time. As is being more and more confirmed, this will pop off eventually. The horror is in realizing it could be times three or more?

I thought maybe we had reached that point this weekend with all the strange lights and steam/smoke at the plant.
I don’t think that major steam releases necessarily will entail an explosion, although they certainly could.
However, after this weekend’s horrors, now all looks relatively serene, excepting some radiation distortion on the cam
On and off again criticalities and endless radioactive steam releases surrounding those events may be even worse in the long run…

“More environmental damage has likely occurred at Japan’s stricken nuclear reactor after more than 45 tons of highly radioactive water leaked from the Fukushima Daiichi atomic power station this weekend, with some of the water possibly reaching the nearby Pacific Ocean, the utility that operates the plants says. The leak counteracts assurances that Tokyo Electric Power Co. (Tepco) has largely controlled damage at the coastal plant…
workers discovered Sunday morning that radioactive water was pooling in a runoff container near one of those purification devices. The system was shut down and the leak apparently ceased, but workers later found highly radioactive water leaking from cracks in the container’s concrete wall into a gutter that leads to the ocean.
Employees stemmed the leak with sandbags.”

When those cores stop melting steel they will release other oxygen and hydrogen. That’s when we all know the situation could cause the largest nuclear explosion known to this planet. This type of explosion could easily be compared to a caldera volcano exploding except this time with molten core, heated sand and hydrogen. If you estimate that every core is 68tons this would be an explosion that would consume all the surrounding area and cause a chain event. A three phase explosion happening underground lifting the entire crust out of the ground surrounding all 6 reactors. The Russians feared it would happen and they were right to freeze the ground and mobilize an entire population to prevent the core from sinking with nitrogen. As for the good folks at TEPCO they are hiding in their makeshift town 300km from Tokyo. It won’t matter if this event occurs because the EMP alone will be large enough to shut down parts of China’s power grid. If you see that grid go down you know we’re in for a cloud of fun. We needed to spend these last 8 months digging a tunnel in the sand to catch that fuel. What they did was pour sea water on it and hope things got better with happy thoughts and smile nuclear ads. When the sand gets hot enough under the steel is going to be a fun time. Stay tuned and keep your Pipboy 2011 stored in a lead box to prevent EMP damage.
