Title: Cesium above new limit in Miyagi beef

Radioactive cesium levels above the government’s new limit have been found in beef from Miyagi Prefecture, the prefectural government said.
Meat from a cow shipped by a farmer in Tome was found to contain more than 150 becquerels of radioactive cesium per kilogram, the Miyagi Prefectural Government said Wednesday.
The stricter limit of 150 becquerels for beef and rice took effect Oct. 1. The previous limit was 500 becquerels per kilogram.

Miyagi Prefecture told the farmer not to ship any more cows until the investigation is completed, and asked nearby ranchers to suspend shipments voluntarily.

..and 'what if' just one does not do 'the right thing' because they have farm payments and a family to feed. (or if one makes a mistake, so to speak) We know that's coming. (no brainer)
Someone could get sick, a child might die or suffer.
Q: Who covers their loses for this contamination?
A: Nobody
1. People are going to eat.
2. Farmers will sell their product.
3. Lack of 100% testing will have a negative result.
4. Many will suffer due to this negligence.
Seems straight forward to me.

Consumption of any food products from the fallout zone will be extremely dangerous for public health. The livestock itself at this point is having trouble staying alive in the contamination. Once the radioactive isotopes concentrate in meat the concentrations will be quite high. The contamination zone is 500km yet life goes on until the Lethal Dose level starts showing up in people. The time it takes to concentrate these levels of radiation is not hard when you eat contaminated food and breathe the particles all day.

Look at this page on the EPA's website
It's called:
"COMMONLY ENCOUNTERED RADIONUCLIDES"
On the list is plutonium, strontium, tritium, etc.
We shouldn't be "commonly" encountering plutonium, strontium, tritium, etc. at all.
This goes to show how casual and unapologetic our exposure to these dangerous radionucludes is considered.

Here's how much "radionuclide emissions to the ambient air" every one of us is "allowed" to be exposed to:
1. the annual effective dose equivalent (ede) to any individual must not exceed 10 millirem (mrem)
2. the annual ede from radioiodine must not exceed 3 mrem

Hi WindorSolarPlease, yes if vegetables are grown in a greenhouse & used soil that was *packaged prior to 3/11, & used spring water. It would certainly be safer.
And the irony that because we generally keep cattle, chicken & pigs indoors & are fed grain that has been fermented, it may actually limit our exposure. No more eating *organic grass fed animals.
If we take some of the Heritage seeds out of cold storage & grow them indoors with spring water we reduce our exposure.

Considering the exported beef going to the U.S. is the ridiculously expensive Wagyu going for $51 to $77 per kilogram, I figure it is all pre-sold to high-end Japanese restaurants. It is doubtful this stuff will be de-branded and mixed with regular $8 per kilogram beef.

The Cesium limit for the US is higher than Japan's. The irony…Japan has the nuclear accident & the US exceeds Japans limits…it indicates an excessive amount of contamination in the Northern Hemisphere.
The US intervention level is 1000 bq/kg, double the Japanese emergency levels of 500 bq/kg.

MaidenHeaven, when levels change, they change the limits. I think we have been dealing with radiation for a very long time. Fukushima just added more that might tip the scale.
