Radiation detected in B.C. seaweed and rainwater not dangerous: researchers, Vancouver Sun, March 28, 2011 at 4:11 pm EDT:
A research team has detected an increased level of radiation in seaweed and rainwater samples gathered in B.C., and attribute the rise to the crippled Fukushima nuclear complex in Japan.
Nuclear physicist Kris Starosta of Simon Fraser University said… “As of now, the levels we’re seeing are not harmful to humans. … [W]e have not reached levels of elevated risk [of cancer].”
A press release sent by the university says that radiation from Japan is being carried to North America on the jet stream, but the most harmful radioactivity was scattered in the atmosphere. What radioactivity remains falls into the Pacific, and falls to land in the form of rain. …

The “levels” all these scientists are talking about are FLAWED AND ERRONEOUS. These so-called “levels” have been superceded by research documented over the past 30 years. This has been amply documented by Rosalie Bertell and Helen Caldicott. Anyone who isn’t taking precautions on the West Coast NOW is an idiot.

Are they keeping the accumulative amounts as we move through this active fall out, over months, adding the totals week by week ?
I can not for there are..
No numbers publish on report !

I might have missed it but I have not seen one single report to quantify what levels that are being found in the US. They just keep saying the levels detected are not dangerous. Well tell us the isotopes and measuremtns being found and we’ll decide for ourselves if it’s dangerous. Oh ya, I forgot – we’re not smart enough to decide for ourselves – which, unfortunately – for many of us this is true(thanks to our education system).

Not harmful to people. Erm, what about plankton and the fish that eat it, and the bigger fish that eat the smaller fish? And the abalone and the sea otters? Just curious, you know, Mr. Physicist.
Report Comment
Perhaps I was misunderstood in my earlier comment. The radiation findings being reported now are declared by scientists to be “insignificant” because they are relating these numbers to STANDARD LEVELS of “safety”. These standard levels which are used to determine the health risk are ALL OUT-OF-DATE. You can look at a list of numbers of rads, microsieverts, and millesieverts. Then you can only evaluate the strength of the radioactivity against the criteria supplied by the experts. BUT THE EXPERTS ARE MISINFORMED. And the nuclear industry is behind the deception. This has been documented for many years by Rosalie Bertell and Helen Caldicott, two tremendously knowledgeable researchers who have devoted their lives to discovering the truth about the effects of nuclear power and nuclear armaments… not only nuclear bombs, but the nuclear waste used now by the American military in the form of depleted uranium, now spread in “killing fields” all over Bosnia, all over Iraq, Afghanistan — and now Libya. Depleted uranium has also permanently disabled thousands of U.S., Canadian, British, French, and German soldiers.

Helena totally nails it, Helen Caldicott was lightyears ahead of everything that is happening. Intellectually She rises to the top of the human heap and if the world listened to her (and Molly Ivins) 25 years ago our world would be a better place. BP and GE have destroyed the world they thought they owned and we are all completely fucked. In an interview last week on Australian radio Caldicott addressed the etiology about our nuclear/oil messes and says that it is not just a bunch of psychopathic males destroying the planet, these guys are hard wired to recklessly split atoms and drill to China for oil. Einstien was right, Two things are infinite; the universe and human stupidity; and I’m not sure about the universe. Einstein and Caldicott need to be listened to.

EPA Radiation Monitor Readings
Submitted by The Wicked One on Mon, 03/28/2011 – 9:08am
These are today’s Radiation Air Monitor readings- very high. The Beta Gross Readings the ones to watch. I live in Texas. San Angelo reading before the Nuclear Crisis was 30 CPM- today it is 240 CPM…significantly higher. These only measure certain specific radition products. One that is the big worry from Japan reactors… MOX FUELS and Plutonium…for which the U.S. does not measure. These are way more toxic nd half lifes are thousands of yearsin the soil, water, and air.

The level of radioactivity in the US and Europe caused by Fukushima is * below * the daily variation of radioactivity.
It’s nonsense to state that it’s not harmful. There is just no effect at all.

Those CPM (counts per mn) mean nothing.
What counts is Sievert.
That’s the unit that measures harm.
People who work in nuclear plants have a Sievert-measuring device.
The CPM are just fear-mongering crap.

How can there be smth in the US?

Hi guys,
I’m not sure what the real situation is out there in the States, but I agree with Afu that the EPA data in CPMs are uselesss: they must be converted into some meaningful radiaction protection units like Sieverts/h or Rads/h.
Problem is: the CPM conversion radiation depends on the GM scale, and I just can’t find any meaningful information on the GM scales used by EPA. These data must be analyzed by some guy who knows their equipment to make any sense of all the EPA trash data…
