Report: Up to 30,000 drums of plutonium-contaminated waste stored in fabric tents above ground at Los Alamos dumpsite — Lab declines to comment

Wildfire shuts Los Alamos lab, forces evacuations, AP, Jun 27, 2011:

[…] The anti-nuclear watchdog group Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety said the fire appeared to be about 3 1/2 miles from a dumpsite where as many as 30,000 55-gallon drums of plutonium-contaminated waste were stored in fabric tents above ground. The group said the drums were awaiting transport to a low-level radiation dump site in southern New Mexico.

Lab spokesman Steve Sandoval declined to comment on that assertion, but did acknowledge there is low level waste stored in drums on lab property that is regularly taken to the Waste Isolation Pilot Project site in Carlsbad. […]

    • Whoopie Whoopie

Jebus – I liked that so much I posted it at HP, crediting an enenews poster.
Because it’s true. FUKUSALL IS THE BALL. They are trying to distract.

      • Well, it can actually be said that the Los Alamos fire is distracting us from what might already be the beginning of a catastrophe at Ft Calhoun. That’s another way that I’m looking at this, as they barely MENTIONED the Nebraska nuclear plants in that MSNBC piece from the news tonight. Mainly focused right on the Los Alamos fire, but Ft Calhoun is the MUCH bigger potential catastrophe.

        • Whoopie Whoopie

Ummmm…your right. Calhoun wasn’t mentioned at all.

          • dharmasyd dharmasyd

And a day ago, even the early eve news tonight, they didn’t mention Calhoun at all. The flood news was all about Minot and the folks whose homes were underwater.

I felt angrier and angrier and was about to send out E’s to tv news desks when Alamos broke loose.

Either ignore and deny all…or engage in paralyzing over saturation.

These guys are good, kiddies. These boys are good.

    • It is entirely possible that Ft Calhoun will in fact become as bad as Fukushima if not worse.

Given that the spent fuel stored for the entire state of Nebraska and even parts of other states (a couple of articles have stated such) is at that plant right now and given that 15-18 hours without power is all that is required for core meltdown, then I actually DO see that there could WELL be a disaster of an even bigger scale than Fukushima any day now in the USA.

However, not to detract from your focus on the reality of Fukushima, which is ALREADY a nuclear catastrophe. Sure. I take supplements every day to protect myself from that fallout, so it is always ever-present in my mind, and I have made significant lifestyle changes based on the fallout being up there with the worst in the country near where I live in the Pacific Northwest. So, I am personally NOT forgetting Fukushima at all.

However, these new potential catastrophes are also real and I do not see the point in down-playing that fact at all.

      • Whoopie Whoopie

so true. Spent fuel in barrels. We’re facing a major disaster right here.

        • Newton

Whoopie, exactly what are you expecting to happen to the spent fuel in dry cask storage? It can’t burn, like what happens if the water boils off in an SFP, it can’t leak (unless the cask is physically damaged) and it can’t float away.

So what is the major disaster here?

      • farawayfan farawayfan

It’s cute how you think your supplements make the slightest difference.

        • And it’s not “cute” that you make a statement like that with such implied negativity, without providing the slighest evidence to support your comment!

Having done some substantial research on this subject of supplements, I am quite aware of the medical fact that taking such to protect from radiation is one of the best single things that ANY of us can do to prevent long-term health effects.

Many who lived through the Chernobyl disaster who are still alive are still alive due to supplements.

What is YOUR purpose with making such a statement? Have YOU “given up” on life? If so, that’s YOUR deal and not mine, so please don’t project such negativity onto me OR on to the discussion.

Here’s a good place to start:

It is certainly not “cute” as farawayfan suggests, but a real and effective measure to protect your long-term health (based on mountains of medical evidence).

          • PS. As someone with ZERO “excess cash” right now, spending 100s of $$ on these supplements is definitely not at ALL “cute”. It is a necessary practicality if I want to remove a good amount of the poisons that are entering my body, and so I have paid what I need to protect myself and my family.

          • @ Savvy
Try the Dollar General, very cheap, large selection !

          • Iagree with you. I take supplements too, along with powdered spirulina and kelp. I am a strong believer in CoEnzyme Q-Q10 but also take numerous other supplements. I’d like to share information with you. Please see the “Radiation Health” module I put together at ( no Safari ) Let me know if you have trouble bringing that site up. My email is and I am “Metamind” on Facebook. Let’s share info.

          • @metamind: Thanks for the comment and the extra tips on stuff to take. Yes, I would like to share information too – I have intended to put up a blog page for weeks with a list of all the info on supplements, as a resource for people, but it has stayed in “draft” mode a while now! Bit of input is needed to get it happening for me, so I will definitely e-mail and let’s see what we can come up with as a “full spectrum protection” kind of thing.

        • lokay5 lokay5

LOL faraway. My sentiments exactly! Supplements = like pissin’ in the (radioactive) wind.

          • Seems that your comment is more of the “pissin’ in the (radioactive) wind” variety, rather than the supplements, eh?!

      • jonjon

True, supplements can help so can nutrition. I was told in Japan that people who survived the Nagasaki nuke fallout were eating brown rice instead of white rice. The other thing that helps eliminate radioactive particles from your body is Miso soup with seaweeds. Apparently the Japanese already had the right diet to survive radiations better then say a westerner.
Unfortunately if the food chain is poisoned it doesn’t help much but at least it’s good to know there are things that can prevent cancers to grow sooner than they should.

    • radegan

Bang on, Jebus. Except it won’t be twenty years and the numbers will make the cause undeniable. But the scale of disaster will make help impossible for most. I’ve noodled the numbers all I can, adding dollops of hope and dividing by half just because – and I still come up with sickening projections. I have never before hoped I was completely wrong.

  • jwfuki

Well, if it’s “TEPCO” approved fabric, then everything should be alright!

  • SteveMT

First declarations of safety, now this…silence/no comment. Why?

PuO2 synthesis potential?:Plutonium metal spontaneously oxidizes to PuO2 in an atmosphere of oxygen. Plutonium dioxide is mainly produced by calcination of plutonium(IV) oxalate, Pu(C2O4)2·6H2O, at 300 °C.Plutonium oxalate is obtained during the reprocessing of nuclear fuel.

The unsettling phrase in this article goes like this … “regularly taken to the Waste Isolation…”

Then, how come there are “30,000 drums of plutonium-contaminated waste” sitting there in the first place.

Oh! we must have missed those the last time we made a “regular” trip to the dump site.

Sorry, we will check into this soon.

  • ZombiePlanet ZombiePlanet

I have miss read this article.

I failed to acknowledge two important points presented:

    “…as many as 30,000 55-gallon drums of plutonium-contaminated waste…”

… “did acknowledge there is low level waste stored in drums” …

    I must apologize, Please…

I thought it might have been some of the “HIGH” level “plutonium” waste.

    My mistake.

  • Thebes

If by “low level” they mean it has to be stored in giant caverns a half mile underground, then yeah, its “low level waste”. At least compared to the 60 grams of plutonium they unearthed on a pipe buried in the ground two weeks ago…

On the plus note, I am directly downwind in the heart of the plume, outside of Taos, and my dosimeter has recorded no elevated count for gamma / xray. We’ll try to hold onto hope, this fire is a monster and my community could be destroyed if today goes badly.

You are correct, research has proven genetic mutations from radiation are directly related to autism, bipolar, OCD, addiction, etc., besides the more obvious cancer connection.

  • Alex2245

not only is their several metric TONS of plutonium on site there is also a wide range of OTHER toxins!

One is the fact that over 6 decades the Lab has blown up a lot of uranium and depleted uranium in dynamic high explosives experiments in the general area in front of the fire. We don’t know to what extent the shrapnel or debris has been cleaned up and could possibly be aerosolized.

Another concern, given both the velocity and ferocity of the Las Conchas Fire, is whether any Lab facilities loose their power and back up generators failed to work for whatever reason. In that case containment systems could fail with unknown safety implications.

  • radegan

IF they really can make it rain, I guessing now would be a good time to do that.
