Wildfire shuts Los Alamos lab, forces evacuations, AP, Jun 27, 2011:
[...] The anti-nuclear watchdog group Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety said the fire appeared to be about 3 1/2 miles from a dumpsite where as many as 30,000 55-gallon drums of plutonium-contaminated waste were stored in fabric tents above ground. The group said the drums were awaiting transport to a low-level radiation dump site in southern New Mexico.
Lab spokesman Steve Sandoval declined to comment on that assertion, but did acknowledge there is low level waste stored in drums on lab property that is regularly taken to the Waste Isolation Pilot Project site in Carlsbad. [...]

Well, it can actually be said that the Los Alamos fire is distracting us from what might already be the beginning of a catastrophe at Ft Calhoun. That’s another way that I’m looking at this, as they barely MENTIONED the Nebraska nuclear plants in that MSNBC piece from the news tonight. Mainly focused right on the Los Alamos fire, but Ft Calhoun is the MUCH bigger potential catastrophe.

And a day ago, even the early eve news tonight, they didn’t mention Calhoun at all. The flood news was all about Minot and the folks whose homes were underwater.

It is entirely possible that Ft Calhoun will in fact become as bad as Fukushima if not worse.
Given that the spent fuel stored for the entire state of Nebraska and even parts of other states (a couple of articles have stated such) is at that plant right now and given that 15-18 hours without power is all that is required for core meltdown, then I actually DO see that there could WELL be a disaster of an even bigger scale than Fukushima any day now in the USA.
However, not to detract from your focus on the reality of Fukushima, which is ALREADY a nuclear catastrophe. Sure. I take supplements every day to protect myself from that fallout, so it is always ever-present in my mind, and I have made significant lifestyle changes based on the fallout being up there with the worst in the country near where I live in the Pacific Northwest. So, I am personally NOT forgetting Fukushima at all.
However, these new potential catastrophes are also real and I do not see the point in down-playing that fact at all.

Whoopie, exactly what are you expecting to happen to the spent fuel in dry cask storage? It can’t burn, like what happens if the water boils off in an SFP, it can’t leak (unless the cask is physically damaged) and it can’t float away.

Having done some substantial research on this subject of supplements, I am quite aware of the medical fact that taking such to protect from radiation is one of the best single things that ANY of us can do to prevent long-term health effects.
Many who lived through the Chernobyl disaster who are still alive are still alive due to supplements.

Yes, I would like to share information too – I have intended to put up a blog page for weeks with a list of all the info on supplements, as a resource for people, but it has stayed in “draft” mode a while now! Bit of input is needed to get it happening for me, so I will definitely e-mail and let’s see what we can come up with as a “full spectrum protection” kind of thing.

True, supplements can help so can nutrition. I was told in Japan that people who survived the Nagasaki nuke fallout were eating brown rice instead of white rice. The other thing that helps eliminate radioactive particles from your body is Miso soup with seaweeds. Apparently the Japanese already had the right diet to survive radiations better then say a westerner.
Unfortunately if the food chain is poisoned it doesn’t help much but at least it’s good to know there are things that can prevent cancers to grow sooner than they should.

If by “low level” they mean it has to be stored in giant caverns a half mile underground, then yeah, its “low level waste”. At least compared to the 60 grams of plutonium they unearthed on a pipe buried in the ground two weeks ago…
On the plus note, I am directly downwind in the heart of the plume, outside of Taos, and my dosimeter has recorded no elevated count for gamma / xray. We’ll try to hold onto hope, this fire is a monster and my community could be destroyed if today goes badly.

I check enenews several times a day. I run through a range of emotions, and it is getting more so.
I am disappointed when there is nothing new. Probably because I am sure there are things going on we will never know.

not only is their several metric TONS of plutonium on site there is also a wide range of OTHER toxins!
One is the fact that over 6 decades the Lab has blown up a lot of uranium and depleted uranium in dynamic high explosives experiments in the general area in front of the fire. We don’t know to what extent the shrapnel or debris has been cleaned up and could possibly be aerosolized.
Another concern, given both the velocity and ferocity of the Las Conchas Fire, is whether any Lab facilities loose their power and back up generators failed to work for whatever reason. In that case containment systems could fail with unknown safety implications.
