May 2012 newspaper published by a Soma City citizens group and translated by EXSKF:
Please be careful!
On the roads and near the side drains by the side walks in Minami Soma City and Soma City, we’ve started to see the black substance that looks like dirt. [...] It has been known to have very high radiation levels [...] Please do not go near it. [...] The survey meter shows 56.3 microsieverts/hour. Young children in particular should pay attention.
It’s noted that the in the same newspaper, they are urging the city’s former residents — particularly mothers with children — to return to the city.

Incineration is clearly endangering everyone in Japan and around the whole world. Remediation with Effective Microorganisms may also be part of this problem.

"Remediation with Effective Microorganisms"? Anne, please clarify for me? Are they using microorganisms to ingest the radioactive debris like BP did on the oil in the Gulf?
Report Comment
The claim that “the microbes were able to accelerate the half-life of the radioactive substances in the area….” Is clearly erroneous as cesium levels have not been reduced by the anticipated half-life around Chernobyl.

Reducing Radiation With Effective Microorganisms®
“Japan is the home of Effective Microorganisms®. EM•1® was studied after the Chernobyl Nuclear Accident of 1986 by Institute of Radiobiology of National Academic Sciences of Belarus. EM•1® Microbial Inoculant was used in phytoremediation projects and demonstrated an increase of radioactive absorption in plants grown in treated areas. However, the EM•1® demonstrated an increase in chlorophyll, proteins and enzymes that protected the plant from the radioactive substances and thus kept these substances from injuring the plants. The suggested conclusion was that the microbes were able to accelerate the half-life of the radioactive substances in the area….”

Wow, where did you find that Anne? these guys are absolute rubbish! there is no way an enzyme can affect the half life of an unstable atomic nucleus. halflifes are governed by the strong and weak nuclear forces. its quantum physics, not chemistry. sheesh.
the scary thing is they bundle these claims with a lot of mumbo-jumbo and people believe it. selling this stuff is fraudulent.

Me thinks that this is profit science, which has a bit of a different standard than science science.

Thanks, Anne, for getting back to me with this info! Now, what an odd conclusion to draw that the half life was effected. I would have seen the studies as more along the lines of finding bioprotective organisms that could be dispersed to help the environment cope with the radiation on a tissue/cellular level. But, their shorter half life assumption is really out in left field. Send those bad boys back to school!

If you look at the photos posted the other day, the black substance grows like a mold, starting in damp places mold would normally start at, and then expand.
Incineration residue would be spread more evenly. A manually applied microbe would be spread evenly. This is something different, and dangerous. It seems to grow where it's moist, then when dry, spreads in the wind. Does it start growing anew where it lands?
And the big question – can this stuff blow overseas? Japan is finished, but if this stuff appears in North America, game over.
Well, not before the radiation gets us, so I suppose it really doesn't matter.

I'm fearful for us all. Money has become the only thing that matters, far more important than our lives. And they can't even see the obvious – what world do they rule over when nothing can survive???

Thanks for that nihon311.
We're watching all the earthquakes very closely now, but sometimes your reports are much quicker than the official sites.
So, please continue to keep us updated and we appreciate this very much.

There are earthquakes everyday and they seem to be getting bigger. I remember right before 3.11 last year, there were so many quakes right before the massive one. The big one is going to hit Tokyo anytime now. I'm friends with Tsukuba University professors that specialize in earthquakes and they all told me that the Tokyo quake is going to strike very soon. Also, the first thing to run out last year was food and water and then you could not buy gasoline from anywhere.

Yes, it hit hard. Also, a few days before a really big quake hit not to far from Tokyo. I really think the Tokyo quake is coming and the bad news is we are not too far from Fukushima Daichi.

I think there is a nuclear plant about 100km NorthWest of you, so watch that one too.
Also, if there's a tsunami it might bring loads of water in from Tokyo Bay – and that water is contaminated. If the tsunami doesn't get you the contamination will.
Anyone have a good map of all nuclear plants in Japan?
I guess the Tokai plant would be the closest[?]

Here is a link with a few maps showing nuclear plants in Japan. It also shows 20km, 50km, 100km, and 200km graphics showing how close you live to these plants. Almost, every person in Japan is within 200km from a nuclear plant.

Because there seems to be know way of knowing what this "black substance" is we should at least refer to it in a way that does include whatwe know about it…let's call it the radioactive black substance or RBS for short.
Report Comment
The fact that after a year, it is still referred to as "mysterious black substance" still astounds me and makes me crazy. What the F is so hard about running it through lab analysis to determine it's makeup? What the hell is going on? Not one independent scientist, not one media outlet, not one investigative journalist, not one concerned citizen with financial wealth. I know there is a deliberate industry/government lockdown to suppress the truth and prevent panic, but still, out of the whole world, not one concerned individual to have it analyzed and reported to the world!
As an adjunct, I'm still waiting for the autopsy reports on the alaskan seals that washed up with lesions a year ago.
I need to change my avatar. I've lost control of my emotions. I'd use McCoy, but he's already taken. I'm thinking a vengeful Klingon.
Report Comment
Maybe it is because something entirely new has been created and they are just not sure on what or "how" to come forward with it yet? Worldwide panic is probably not an option.
Report Comment
If you live anywhere near coal towns, you would see this mysterious black substance as coal dust. It's lightweight, can accumulate in one spot and bypass another. No reason to think it is anything but the ash from the burning of debris, much of which contains radionuclides. So, that would be a really good reason for TEPCO and supporters to continue to refer to it as "mysterious black substance". Were it to be called "ash" falling all over parts of Japan, including the possibility of containing human remains, the Japanese government would lose all control of the populace. The burning would end. Nuclear power in Japan would end. The current government would end. It is the ONE secret that TEPCO and the government would have to maintain above all others.
