Reuters Alert: “Fukushima damage leaves spent fuel at risk” -US Lawmaker — “Far worse than he expected” — Bags of rock only protection from tsunami
Title: Fukushima damage leaves spent fuel at risk-U.S. lawmaker
Source: Reuters AlertNet
Date: April 16, 2012
- Japan, with assistance from the U.S. government, needs to do more to move spent fuel rods out of harm’s way at the tsunami-stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, said U.S. Senator Ron Wyden on Monday
- Wyden, a senior Democratic senator on the Senate Energy committee, toured the ruined Fukushima plant on April 6, and said the damage was far worse than he expected
- Wyden said he was most worried about spent fuel rods stored in damaged pools
- [He] urged the Japanese government to accept international help to prevent further release of the radioactive material if another earthquake should happen
- Wyden said the only protection for the pools from another tsunami appeared to be “a small, makeshift sea wall erected out of bags of rock”
- Wyden said the spent fuel should be moved to safer storage sooner than anticipated under a 10-year clean-up plan

The Five Stages of Grief:
Denial
Anger
Bargaining
Depression
Acceptance
Rhetorical question: It this still the denial phase or the acceptance phase?
Answer: There has been no Anger, Bargaining, or Depression so Denial is where they are still at.
Report Comment
Re: Govt/TEPCO –
Denial – What they're ordered to do, or else.
Anger – They may not get their bonuses, but they keep their paychecks.
Bargaining – Telling the wife they're not responsible for the impending deaths of their children, and every other living species in Japan.
Depression – No sex from the wife (see above)
Acceptance – Repeating this cycle over and over after soaking their livers in Suntory.

Good one SteveMT! Helen Kubler-Ross would be proud!
I never thought of FUKU in that light,….have read her work and must agree with you. Japan appears to be not progressing through ANY GROWTH cycles what so ever, grief wise.
Also,…the definition of insanity is this, "Doing the same thing(s) over and over again, expecting DIFFERENT results".
There IS NO SOLUTION TO A PROBLEM, unless and until one ADMITS THERE IS A PROBLEM!
Houston to JAPAN–"We've GOT a problem!"

I have posted this a while ago but it seems appropriate again here…
A Time Magazine article from Aug. 2006 titled “Why we don’t prepare for disaster” reads:
[“There are four stages of denial," says Eric Holdeman, director of emergency management for Seattle's King County. "One is, it won't happen. Two is, if it does happen, it won't happen to me. Three: if it does happen to me, it won't be that bad. And four: if it happens to me and it's bad, there's nothing I can do to stop it anyway."]
The Time article continues:
[Because the real challenge in the U.S. today is not predicting catastrophes. That we can do. The challenge that apparently lies beyond our grasp is to prepare for them. Dennis Mileti ran the Natural Hazards Center for 10 years, and is the country's leading expert on how to warn people so that they will pay attention… He is quoted as saying, "We know exactly--exactly--where the major disasters will occur," he told [the author] later. "But individuals under-perceive risk."]

Anger phase here… No denying it..
Progressing wildly though.

Anger is being expressed, but privately, because they are taught to express politeness at all times in public.
The proof that the people at the bottom are moving through grief stages is in the resistance to starting up any of the 54 reactors that shut down in Japan.

Could it be that they look like they are in denial, because they have no information to act on?
Could it be that the press has so completely covered up this whole thing along with the companies involved, that everyone is completely bamboozled?
No one teaches the truth. No media covers it. No one even knows that they are frogs being boiled to death, slowly.

From your post: "We are able to check the temperatures at the vessel's bottom with the remaining <b>'ONE'</b>…" What!
Just think after over one year and Trillions of yen spent, one thermometer is all that is left. Can they please order some more? Anticipate and be proactive are unknown terms to these people. They are not good chess players, as we are the ones about to be checkmated.

Just throw in some of those floating thermometers that are used in aquariums.
After all, it is all in cold shutdown, with no more radiation, safe to move back into the area, right?
Just stick your hand in there and pull it out to check it. We can send over a few if you need them.

Hi Steve, good too see another long time lurker surface.
I have to pipe in .. I keep seeing 'crime against humanity' and I want to remind people that that is only a piece of the pie, and gives no thought to the flora and fauna of the planet that will suffer.
The word I've seen used is called Ecocide – wanton destruction of the environment and the support it provides to ALL life forms.
In some ways, the planet would be better off without humanity. Let it die (as it will in time no matter what, even without daiichi).
Ecocide – that's the crime. Please don't be selfish and only think of humanity. There is a lot of innocent animals out there who need our guardianship and justice.

Thanks Richard,
I am a long time, nearly-from-the-beginning lurker, indeed.
I'd like to redact one of your thoughtful comments.
"In some ways, the planet would be better off without [some of] humanity." Ecocide is a very good term to better describe this destruction. You're right, it should not be limited to just humanity. I've been sensitized to Agenda 21 issues, which is being pushed through my town. So, I'm against all humans being eliminated, but they [the bad guys that is] have got this game rigged. The people guilty of these crimes are never brought to justice. A relative few rotten apples can indeed spoil the whole bunch. My gripe is that they want us to put ourselves on the guilty trip and willingly jump off of the cliff for the good of the earth, when they are the ones who did this and should be doing so instead of us.

Where do you start with these TEPCO boneheads? Strengthen the foundation for the crane to pick the fuel assembly out of the pond. HAHAHAHA. Where is the equipment to drive the piles. This operation alone could take 6 months to a year. The existing crane weighed 35 tons with a span over the SFP. How heavy will the crane be to span the building. I guess that is what TEPCO is talking about? Is TEPCO going to span over the burned out hulk that is there now? TEPCO will need to pick the 35 ton crane out of the SFP. These irresponsible bastards are not a part of the real world. Desk jockeys all of them. Crazy lunatics.
This will be an endeavor that could last two to three generations. I don’t think any government or company is going to commit to this time frame. Where are they going to get the scientists, engineers, skill labor, equipment, and logistics to span this time frame. TEPCO Japan won’t. There’re going to let the people die there.
This is the most evil, vile, irresponsible company in history. A person is at a loss for words to describe these bastards. Psychopaths all. Where is the outrage?

I honestly think that it has as much to do with the Japanese government as any business prospect of TEPCO. Meaning that they are willing to guard the economy even at the expense of their own collective demise. No doubting TEPCO IS VERY BAD, the whole damned industry is utterly flawed, UNWILLING TO ADMIT THEIR TRAVESTY ON THE WORLD, as they loose either way. By killing the entire planet or shutting the nuclear industry down for their perils of society and mankind.
