Reactor 3 uses mixed uranium-plutonium oxide (MOX) fuel in the core. According to Edwin Lyman of the UCS, “the use of MOX generally increases the consequences of severe accidents in which large amounts of radioactive gas and aerosol are released compared to the same accident in a reactor using non-MOX fuel…. Because of this, the number of latent cancer fatalities resulting from an accident could increase by as much as a factor of five for a full core of MOX fuel compared to the same accident with no MOX.”

The French Institute for Radio-protection and Nuclear Safety has published their own estimates for radioactivity spewed out of Fukushima until Marsh 22.

Mixed Oxide (MOX) Fuel

Mixed oxide (MOX) fuel provides about 2% of the new nuclear fuel used today.
MOX fuel is manufactured from plutonium recovered from used reactor fuel.
MOX fuel also provides a means of burning weapons-grade plutonium (from military sources) to produce electricity.

France derives over 75% of its electricity from nuclear energy. This is due to a long-standing policy based on energy security.
France is the world’s largest net exporter of electricity due to its very low cost of generation, and gains over EUR 3 billion per year from this.
France has been very active in developing nuclear technology. Reactors and fuel products and services are a major export.
It is building its first Generation III reactor and planning a second.
About 17% of France’s electricity is from recycled nuclear fuel.

Japan is currently at odds with France.
We (as I’m French incidentally) have been stating the plain truth from the start. As a result, several French rescuers that France naively dispatched there on the spot are being held hostage to Japan’s bureaucratic lies. Japan wants them to be sent back in areas where we know life is at risk but these bureaucratic assholes have declared the situation “safe”, which we know is false. So much for the poor Japanese population who have no help, no government and are just being asked to die with dignity…
At this time, both the Fukushima and Ibaraki provinences are contaminated. They are Chernobylized beyond repair. Japan wants to “deal with” that situation with blather, lenifying BS and pseudo-truths.

This * accident *, not incident is very serious. Estimated 6. Yesterday I wrote to the ASN asking them why this accident should not be reassessed 7. So far no answer.
The IRSN has assessed fall-out so far to be about 10% of Chernobyl as of 22-03-11. Which is already very high and explains why two provinces are already unfit for human life for dozens of years.

Radioactivity currently in Tokyo is about 20 micro-SVs, which is above normal of course. But at the same time is a good indication that 200 km away from Fukushima the situation remains close to normal.
And that’s good news for Japanese people who are coping for this * disaster *.
