Title: State Agencies Ramping Up Operations in Bayou Corne
Source: Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness
Date: Aug 22, 2012
Emphasis Added
State agencies are stepping up their around-the-clock operations near Bayou Corne as Texas Brine begins drilling the well casing for its exploratory well near the sinkhole that formed near its underground salt cavern a few weeks ago.
Officials from the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, LouisianaState Police, the Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Environmental Quality will provide oversight of the drilling process 24 hours a day, seven days a week for the duration of the drilling.
Louisiana State Police will be relocating its Forward Command Post evening to monitor the operations. LSP’s Hazmat Unit has increased staffing levels to provide 24-hour operational support throughout the process. The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality also will be monitoring the air quality in the area around the clock.
[...]
DEQ continues its monitoring and sampling for naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) with no dangerous readings to date.
[...]
Out of an abundance of caution, DOTD engineers are continuously monitoring the state road system in this area — 24 hours a day with roving patrols and frequent surveys. If conditions change, DOTD crews are prepared to close roads immediately to ensure public safety and will announce appropriate detours.
[...]
DOTD engineers are measuring elevation levels weekly using GPS technology at four locations along La. 70 – one on Highway 70 perpendicular to the site, and at the Bayou Choupique, Grand Bayou and Bayou Corne bridges. So far, no changes in elevation have been found at these locations.

I am sure we can expect the same quality of action from DHS as we saw after Katrina. Confiscate guns first.

Yes. Especially if a particular group of miscreants is found to be responsible for this disaster.

Are they, going to drill under the sink hole into the salt dome to let who knows what loose into the water?
If so, and it is let loose can't it still explode with what is around there, and what would that do to their water supply/environment?
Report Comment
"No changes in elevation" Excuse my ignorance but what is he talking about certainly not the air quality or is it just semantics.
Report Comment
Don't know moonshellblue, maybe up lifting of the ground, creating a bigger sink hole, or whatever??
Report Comment
I think elevation as in above/below sea level.

Authorities were hoping to perform a controlled vent and burn before midnight, State Police Superintendent Col. Mike Edmonson said.
For the controlled “vent and burn,” authorities will attempt to blow two holes in the tank, ignite the isobutane and conduct a controlled burn, Edmonson said. The truck was carrying 8,700 gallons of isobutane.
