A strange report by the former editor of the Japan Times Weekly Yoichi Shimatsu on the Jeff Rense Radio program, Nov. 28, 2011:

The real problem is not so much the wild boar but there’s another animal. There are two types of whats called a raccoon dog. One is very cute, like a raccoon, but they’re actually a wolf/dog-type species…
I live in the mountains of Japan, you get back from work very late at night and on the last train walk through the mountains in the late night and see these creatures… but these are not the cute ones, they are very long, much bigger than a fox, more like a wolf — long ugly snout, rat like face, long bushy tail. They go through garbage, eat insects, they’re scavengers, they’re predators.
Raccoon Dog
They’re also vampires, they unlocked a neighbors chicken coop — they unlatch it they go in they latch onto the neck and suck the blood out of them because they don’t like to eat the feathers.
Now these are the animals I’m really worried about… mutations… these things eat anything… and the mutation of these animals … they’re large enough to take down a child or an elderly person even an adult. I take an armful of rocks whenever they get close…
Raccoon Dog
They’re called raccoon dogs… extremely large and potentially dangerous. I think the mutation of these things in the wild of Fukushima now that they’re left alone… These are the animals that are just tearing the flesh off of cattle, leaving nothing… They’re quite dangerous animal.
Without the farmers there to shot them, these things will really flourish…
Like a nightmare scenario…
These are very primitive dogs, not raccoons… They’re really fearsome animals and they’re dangerous… I think there is a future threat, again the Pandora’s box is open…

I’m sure we will be hearing more stories like this, but that doesn’t mean they are true. Perhaps these kind of stories are just distractions? ‘Look over here-vampire dogs! Don’t look at the radioactive steam jetting out of the ground over there’ type stuff.

I have listened to Yoichi Shimatsu many times on Rense Radio Network. Never have I believed him to exaggerate a point or, to mislead anyone with his comments. He always seemed to tell it like it is. I always look forward to his next appearance on Rense Radio.
Thank you Mr. Shimatsu and keep those rocks handy. (Might even want to hide a baseball bat near the train/path location that you can pick up every night on your way home. Around here we call them a “Louisville Slugger“ and tape a flashlight to it)

I am skeptical of these claims. I don’t think so dramatic a mutation would occur in multiple animals so quickly (especially since he seems to imply that these creatures are fully grown). It seems possible that normally non-aggressive dog-like animals could simply be so starved for food that they have become much more aggressive and have resorted to attacking/eating animals they would not previously have tried to eat. But I think this guy’s claims are probably exaggerated–not necessarily intentionally, but perhaps when he sees these things in the dark his own anxiety about radiation-induced mutations is causing what he sees to seem even scarier and more bizarre than it actually is.
Since it’s a radio interview, presumably he has not provided any pictures.
I do not doubt that mutations are indeed occurring–they happened after Chernobyl, so they seem likely to occur in Japan. I just think the sensational claim about “mutated vampire dogs” is most likely a reflection of his own anxieties working upon his imagination in the dark of the night.

Mutations are coming. We know that from what we’ve learned about Radiation. We’ve got numerous people sick, we’ve got weird flowers and veggies growing. DO NOT PRESUME IT’S NOT RADIATION. These dogs have been running wild for 9 months.

I’ve seen the mutated flowers. As I say, I don’t doubt that mutations are happening; I’m just skeptical that these raccoon dogs have mutated into what he calls a “sub-species” like this in seven months. One thing I notice in the pictures of mutated flowers, and also in the pictures of human deformities after Chernobyl, is how varied the mutations are. In the Cherno pictures, one child has a bulge coming out of his back, another one has no arms, another one has an eye that’s bulging out. Others have no discernible physical deformities, but they are mentally handicapped. I suppose a sub-species might arise from mutations over time (if animals with certain kinds of mutations survived better and reproduced better than others), but I don’t think you would see that in seven months. I’m also skeptical that the radiation exposure has made these creatures bigger and stronger that the usual raccoon dogs. From everything I’ve seen and read, radiation exposure only makes things bigger and stronger in comic books. In real-life, it causes things to be born with missing or deformed parts or smaller brains in a seemingly random way.
I think what he’s seeing are the regular creatures, but perhaps whatever they normally eat is less available (perhaps as a result of radiation the creatures they normally eat have been less able to reproduce), so they are starving and therefore behaving more aggressively. Maybe the latest generation of them has a slightly under-developed brain (like the birds near Chernobyl), and maybe that has also made some of them more aggressive.

thank you for injecting some science into this discussion of “mutant vampire dogs”. Emotions can sometimes run high on enenews, because we all care so deeply about this ongoing tragedy for the world.
I agree, it’s probably behavioral changes brought on by hunger.
There will be mutations, almost certainly. But other than some bacteria or fungi, you won’t see new subspecies created that quickly. Certainly not with small mammals. In a decade or more, yes.

Though in reality, I think vast amounts of sea life are simply going to be weakened, deformed, or killed by it, and the overall number of fish may decline in the most contaminated parts.
I was thinking the other day, however, about the fact that the deepest parts of the ocean have some very exotic life forms that human beings rarely see. Overtime, I would imagine that much of the radioactive stuff dumped into the ocean will sink to the bottom, where those deep water creatives will be badly affects by it.

I’ve been following your input since I discovered ENE news & follow up to many of your links EXCEPT for HP because I’d found some of the earliest reporting on Fukushima’s radiological impact on the USA,including my neck of the woods and I was able to use the articles to gain some friends & family who have children to pay some attention to the issue & event before I was deemed to be some kind of an effin’ paranoid freak thanks to MSM and Obama’s “Operation DoLittle” in response to history’s biggest & worst disaster EVER known to man and yet Viagra & tampon commercials have fallen on more eyes than word of,EVEN where & WHAT Fukishima IS has been heard in peoples ears??!!How can there be people who didn’t ever even hear of Fukushima 9x out of 10 whenever I find a good opportunity to work it into a conversation?!!I’m pretty much resigned to the fact that it’s likely to be terminal for my bunch because even if they’re “coming around” to a logical way of thinking~finally(!) -Our “conditions” don’t allow the protective measures,basic equipment & neccessary items needed to commit to avoiding the hazards that survival in the 21st Century requires,but I’m hopeful of a change or timely windfall from an idea in time to complete my “shopping list” in time to make a difference & make a go of it.I’ve given up that hope I held for a noteworthy

This leaves the question how environment will react to radioactivity. Japan itself will (atleast for contamined ares) end up like chernobyl – flora and fauna reclaiming back the places, though it remains uncertain if those can actually exist with the radiation. Plants so far seem to be very tolerant to elevated radiation (and contamination), mushrooms even utilizing the radiation. For animals, it remains unclear in chernobyl if they actually can live with the radiation or it is just a continued immigration with deceasing. Different species – different reaction…

These are nothing new, they’ve been around for quite some time, and are well documented. There is much art and craft in the Japanese culture about these dog related creatures.

They have been systematically hunted in Japan since the seventies, much like wolves in the US. Without the predatory pressure from man, they are flourishing again, forming packs in the no-go zone and surrounding mountains.

Even farther. The first adaptation of the “I Am Legend novella (which is quite good) was The Last Man on Earth (1964), possibly Vincent Price’s best performance. The right word for Raccoon Dog (in Japan, there are other subspecies on the mainland) is Tanuki and these creatures have some legendary status of their own as protectors of nature. Studio Ghibli has a sad a rather beautiful anime film of them trying to prevent the takeover of a mountain homeland from the development of Tokyo’s suburbs (set in the 1960s). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pom_Poko

Mount Tama or Tama Hills. I just checked and there are two Geiger counters going in that area and their readings (presumably one or two meter height, rain-protected, though I have no way of knowing) are quite low, in case anyone from there sees my IIRC above and gets worried. About .07 to .13 mcSv. Though I would be concerned, even so, if particulates from any of the radioactive waste incinerators are going that way.
By contrast , here in western Oregon near the Cascades, the Corvallis radnet station is showing some peak Beta activity of over 100 clicks per minute. There’s a very heavy fog, very cold air, wet ground. My little SOEKS says it is avg. .15 indoors and out, but .20 on the grass. We may be getting more than Mt. Tama. So I might be bitten by a mutated raccoon sooner than Shizuku Tsukishima (in Whisper of the Heart, another Ghibli film — fictional character who lived in the Tama Hills in the 1990s) will be bitten by a mutated tanuki.
Actually, we have a cougar running round the neighborhood according to reports. Much more dangerous than either, yet we’ve never had a reported attack by one in our area, over the last 150 years. FWIW.

Has a gestation period of only a couple of months (i.e. fast-growing cells, so a sure heat-seek for radiation). Radiation does affect the brain.

One night I was hitchin’ in Malibu Canyon, and it started to rain, so

I agree with you, Iam335. People left their animals to starve and they are becoming aggressive. Probably even less than hungry humans would become if abandoned in the same situation without help.
Many may recall that Japan created an entire B rated movie industry based upon characters created out of the nightmare of nuclear radiation from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, in part as a way to cope. Much like American ranchers overreact to wolves and perpetuate myths that are spread throughout society about wolves eating children (not yet actually happened in the entire history of the United States), this journalist will have 60 years of cinematic drama shaping how he perceives these wild animals. I’d be scared sh–less without the social inculcation walking in the forest at night with any predator. But, dogs can pack and become very dangerous to people where other wild creatures would tend to stay away from humans at first scent regardless of how hungry they are, save a mother protecting her young. So, there is something to his fears. But, yeah, this will become the distraction. Kill the dogs, cut down the forests, burn the radiated debris, smile a lot. Ignore the men behind the curtain.

Did you know there were no actual raccoons in Japan until they started importing them as pets, the result of an endearing cartoon ? Now they are a problem, getting into temples and shrines and doing what raccoons do, like in our own attics and garages.
I wish this fellow was more worried about Japanese children.

Distraction is about all we’ve got, unless we want to spend time in a Occupy camp, or go to Japan and lodge a complaint at the door of Tepco and the government, any of which is just about a hair more effective. If they went to the world-wide “let’s all go there and each put in ten minutes” approach, I’d be up for that — seeing as how I’m old — but they aren’t, are they? For me that leaves two things I can try — build a greenhouse and plant leafy greens inside — done that — or sit around looking for comic relief.

I’ve been thinking about that issue a lot, risabee (what can one do about the nuclear monster). I’m inspired by Whoopie’s energy and attitude, for instance. My guess is that succumbing to distractions is not a good thing to do (and yet here I am).
Note to self: do something to help right now even if it’s small, then do somethting else to help, then…

Right after this short audio cuts off, they talk about the first shark attack on the Russian coast ever recorded in history!! We got all sorts of animals and sea life affected by this now.

I’m not going to doubt the guy. There’s some kind of ‘Chupacabra’ animal running around North America now, well documented, that is a blood sucker.
What is strikingly odd, is how fast somebody thought to release wild horses in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. Now, either whoever it was did it as a second thought, ‘Hey this is now a place we can try to re-establish the wild horse’, or ‘Now that the operation has been successful, we can start re-populating the area with the animals it used to have, now that it has been de-populated of humans.” It is highly likely that the effects of radiation on wild animal populations has been thoroughly studied and known about since at least the 60′s.
There’s no doubt or conspiracy theory involved with the facts of some very wealthy people and liberal idea leaders having stated they wish humans were reduced in population to half a billion. Nor is there of some very wealthy organizations with a long mostly secret track record of doing their darndest to alter society and politics and to reduce fertility, by hook or by crook.

HOTR no one is laughing at the story itself because we know what it means. The headline should have been better. If it had been something about abandoned, starving dogs attacking residents it would have been a bit better I think. The part about mutations could have come in the body of the text.
