(Subscription Only) Title: TEPCO: No. 4 reactor building can withstand 6-plus intensity quake
Source: THE ASAHI SHIMBUN
Date: August 31, 2012
The heavily damaged No. 4 reactor building and its spent fuel pool at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant can withstand earthquakes with intensities of upper 6 on the Japanese scale of 7, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Aug. 30.The utility said it confirmed the strength of the building after conducting a seismic analysis.
[...]
TEPCO said it found no major damage in walls supporting the storage pool on the top floor.
It also said the building now has almost the same strength it had before the disaster because the removal of rubble created by the explosion has decreased its weight.

According to Tepco reactor no. 4 can withstand a 6.0 earthquake.
That's not good enough.
Recently in the sea to the north of Japan there was a 7.7 earthquake.
Report Comment
We need outside (unbiased) experts to check and report on the status of this plant.
Report Comment
Well, Tepco, I hope we'll never find out.
The concrete structure is one thing – the miles of plastic piping for cooling, the duct tape constructs and quick-fix connections are a completely different story.
What's the use if the SFP keeps standing, but can't be cooled anymore?
Facepalm.
Report Comment
That's ok then, just gotta avoid anything bigger for a few decades or centuries, no problem.
Good luck.

Who else has a hard time understanding the logic of this report?
Report Comment
It implies that tepgo is satisfied and not pursuing restructuring or bracing of these buildings! THERE IS NO PURSUIT TO STURDY THAT PLACE UP! WOW FU PUNKS

What building? WHAT building?
They mean that leaning,burnt-out shell of a building?
We (I) hate being spoken to like we're fools.
It's all better under the tarp..what happen?..they prop it up with dead workers?
Do we get to see the new control room? the new pristine containment?
So what?..contaminate the world with radiation..and talk BS at the same time.. as though they are to be believed?
TEPCO is the fool.

M7.9 EQ: NOAA Tsumani Center has issued tsumani watch. The link for above is:
http://ptwc.weather.gov/ptwc/text.php?id=pacific.TSUPAC.2012.08.31.1255
This is a major quake, folks, in the deep ocean trench off the Philippines. Depending on the motion, a dangerous tsumani may be heading towards Samar Island and southern Philippines Islands.

Tsunami station in event mode. Seven buoys in wastern Pacific Ocean are in event mode right now.

Well this isn't going to be good. And the buoy's off of Japan seem to be included. Thanks for the link.

Interesting. Obama wants to cut funding for the NOAA tsunami warning system:

But the GOP wants to cut the same funding, too:

Apparently, neither party cares if everyone on the West Coast dies from undetected tsunamis, or nuclear power plants that don't get any warning from impending flooding. And it's only a few million dollars, a minor drop in the overall Federal debt bucket.
And you think either party cares about you and your children?

If you live on the East Coast of the southern Phillipine Islands, it's a good day to take that road trip into the mountains. Lock your doors and go now. The 7.9 EQ is in the deep ocean. Any tsumani generated by this quake will come up the steep slope of the ocean floor off the Philippines, and pile up in the offshore shallows. There has been much flooding of the Philippine Islands in recent months due to the encroachment of the ocean/global warming/sea level rise/plate tilt/rain/typhoons. A tsunami and major quake damage is certainly not needed. Good luck to all who live in the Philippines.
Report Comment
Tsumani warnings lifted for Japan and other locations around the Pacific Rim. Quake downgraded to M 7.6, still a large EQ. Be alert for compensation earthquakes and aftershocks up and down the Pacific Rim over the next week or two.

TEPCO lies patholigically but they always have a tell you can follow.
"TEPCO said it found no major damage in walls supporting the storage pool on the top floor.
It also said the building now has almost the same strength it had before the disaster because the removal of rubble created by the explosion has decreased its weight."
What they mean is they say the building has the same "Strength to static load ratio" after removing 30-50% of the dead structure. So they removed 2 decks of panel, strucutre and the roof material.
That means the structure has lost 30-50% of it's sttic strength. or some reasonable fraction of the beams are failed.
Now how much of the dynamic strength is lost? Probably a lot more. A dynamic event moves load paths around, wehter it's a quake or a cyclone.
Oh Japan is back in Cyclone season. (Typhoons to them). Hurricanes to us.

patb2009, thanks for the clarification! They also aren't mentioning the fatigue on the materials with each subsequent quake, however small. Everybody in the nuclear industry, not just TEPCO, leaves that out of their equations. But, in the land of the earthquakes, Japan, that ought to be a little harder to pull off. We'll see what the reaction is, no pun intended. TEPCO is having a harder sell in many quarters with every bit of "good news" they announce.

Don't confuse the two scales.
Japan uses their own earthquake scale where it tops out at 7, I guess because anything higher and you won't live through it anyway.
The renamed US Richter scale tops out at 10, because I guess they figure anything greater than that and earth goes off axis and out of obit then crashes into the sun.
