Title: Water Level Measurement for the Verification of Reactor Building Health
Source: Tepco
Date: April 13, 2012
Purpose
To verify the reactor building health, we checked the levelness of the spent fuel pool (SFP) and the reactor well before commencement of cover installation work for removing fuels of Unit 4.

Oh, that's nice, at least they're being somewhat proactive about SFP 4.
(BTW, when a superheated mass of molten corium hits groundwater, the steam pushes it UP. It travels a net distance UP, cools, reheats, goes back down, hits water and again we go. That's why these things are breathing [as per Arnie Gundersen's description last year] like a radioactive dragon in the earth, rearing it's head every so often and spewing radioactive particles. The China Syndrome name is a total misnomer.)

So will their findings confirm their belief in the building's "health," or will it reveal, to their astonishment, that the patient is in quite a bad way?
The reactor building has not been "healthy" for months. Its case is terminal, and it has high potential for spreading its contagion far and wide when it lets out its last, poisonous breath.
I don't see what a polyester cover is really going to accomplish (aside from shielding their fuel extraction efforts from the view of cameras). If the fuel catches on fire, the tent is just going to ignite along with it.

Iam335 thanks for the laugh! Tent catching on fire, what a nightmare!
Even after a year I still can't believe all this fuel has been stored this way! 1/2 of a millionth of a gram will kill you, it tends to aerosol and catch on fire, it's covered by zirc which is even more flammable, and then they put the whole batch on top of a pressure cooker, for…ever! Unreal! We've got 450 fukushima's at least in the world only waiting for the next natural disaster. Man is doomed, we've already made it probable to become extinct! But fear not, in about four hundred million years the next superior and radiation proof organisms will once again crawl out of the ocean. Life will move on without us fools!

If the building falls mankind faces probable extinction. Where are the molten cores? Lost em. Is aerosol plutonium complexes raining down across the planet? Yes. Did mount Etna just blow up? Yes. Are we having fun? YES! The first reports of health defects are coming in to kick off the summer. Dr. Happy is out of his mind with exuberance.

SFP #4 doesn't make any difference at all. The ELE created by the earthquake on 3/11 is already moving forward. The collapse of the #4 pool is a drop in a bucket full of radiation.
G-d bless you, Dr. Happy. You should can your exuberance and sell it here on ENENEWS. Many, many people are going to need it.
I might buy some, too. As I read more of this I start to reach the boundaries of my faith, and I could use a shot of exuberance now and then.

Tens of tons of highly toxic uranium and plutonium were ejected into the atmosphere, and proven by EPA RADnet data being picked up in air filter samples.
Man’s greed for “cheap” power has led us down the road to fashion our complete destruction, a total annihilation of the human species and all the other animals, in our insane attempt to grab “cheap power”. We could pay the highest price of all for this “cheap power”.

There has been ZERO remediation of any radiation from Fuku to date. Either it's exposed to atmosphere, picked up and dumped in the ocean, or being sprayed with water, which is flowing straight back into the ocean.
The debris is being burned, with no remediation of the exhaust emissions.
There is no question we are all going to pay the price for this disaster. Every last one of us.

**** As for unit 4, although the reactor building exploded, supposedly due to the influx of hydrogen during unit 3 venting, all fuel is in a secure state with spent fuel pool cooling.
Hence, it is concluded that radioactive emissions from the power station are primarily originating from the reactor buildings of units 1-3.
In April 2011, dust inhibitor was sprayed, initially manually, and subsequently with a crawler dump. From May 2011, we started using a concrete pump and a bendable spray tower vehicle.
The unit 1 reactor building cover was installed between May and October 2011. This cover contains an exhaust system that reduces radiation material density to below 1% and also shields the inside of the reactor from rain.
In November 2011, we detected Xe-135 in unit 2. However, we have concluded that this arose from spontaneous nuclear fission of curium 242 and curium 244 not recriticality. ****

Blue light observed near reactor 4

What would the blue lights be? Just lights or something else..?
Report Comment
They're having a sale at K-Mart.
Report Comment
Many criticality accidents have been observed to emit a blue flash of light and to heat the material substantially. This blue flash or "blue glow" is often incorrectly attributed to Cherenkov radiation, most likely due to the very similar color of the light emitted by both of these phenomena. This is merely a coincidence.
From Wikipedia:
"The blue glow of a criticality accident results from the spectral emission of the excited ionized atoms (or excited molecules) of air (mostly oxygen and nitrogen) falling back to unexcited states, which happens to produce an abundance of blue light. This is also the reason electrical sparks in air, including lightning, appear electric blue. It is a coincidence that the color of Cherenkov light and light emitted by ionized air are a very similar blue despite their very different methods of production. It is worth remarking that the smell of ozone was said to be a sign of high ambient radioactivity by Chernobyl liquidators."

Is it just me but measuring tilt seems like the last sign before imminent failure?
Seems it would be better to examine the load bearing structure for cracking, because as elements fail the structure can stay level until it loads to failure?
Especially given the M5 and M6 quakes rolling through Fukushima, i'd be more worried about a
crack in a critical beam getting stressed by a quake and failing fast.

There you go. The big unknown is how much damage has been done underneath by the 3000 degree molten puddle that leaked out the bottom. I will wager almost nothing is known of how the puddle will react with an assortment of soils and rock and how it weakens it.
Report Comment
Where do you get 3000 degrees from?.
Report Comment
3000 is the minimum temperature of corium, it can be as high as 5000 F.
But given 3 reactors went into full scale meltdown and melt through, we know the minimum
temp was 3000.
Now the TEPCO optimistic model says the corium did not burn it's way otu of the building.
of course the Tepco model probably takes little account of the Earthquake damage to the foundations, cracking, buckling, splitting, and i'm willing to bet it doesn't measure the
loss of plumbing.
Tepco thoguht there would b 8 meters of water in the CV's and when they checked unit 2?
they found less then half a meter.
I'm willing to bet it's from cracks, which drained water out.
Report Comment
I think the only important part of your statement is WAS 3000 degrees. I think you will find the corium in Chernobyls reactor four has now solidified.

Another thermometer at Fukushima No. 2 reactor apparently not working
FUKUSHIMA, Japan, April 15, Kyodo
Tokyo Electric Power Co. indicated Sunday another thermometer may be malfunctioning at the bottom of the No. 2 reactor vessel at the tsunami-crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power complex as the plant operator observed abnormal temperature readings the previous day.
The thermometer was deemed unavailable for use when it showed an abnormally high electrical resistance level following a sudden increase of temperatures to 60 C on Saturday morning, leaving only one temperature measurement device working properly at the bottom of the reactor vessel, the utility said.
In February, another of the three thermometers at the bottom of the vessel was found to have malfunctioned after showing a surge in temperatures.
Report Comment
So when the the last thermometer breaks, how do they know it's in Cold Shutdown???
Not that Cold shutdown means anything once the reactors are breached.
Report Comment
They'll know it's in cold shutdown because all the thermometers will be reading zero….

eight ten dollar harbor freight levels taped onto the building last march could monitor the building for levelness. this is just ridiculous.

All they have to do is look in the POOOOOOLLLLLL
Water is always level. If the height of the water in the pool is equal distance from the top of the pool all the way around, it is LEVEL.
This is called a water level.
Basic. But this company will probably hire a subsidiary of itself and require government taxpayer financing for 10 million to figure this out, cause they are broke.
